  • Best Intro Zoom Lens
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
This was my first "big" lens purchase, in all aspects including: cost, size, and focal length! Cost: I purchased this lens when it was right around $1200. When looking at this lens I was also considering a Tamron 70-300mm, Sony 70-200mm, and Tamron 150-500mm. Ultimately, the Sony was out of budget and didn't give me the "wow factor" at its price. At a $800 price difference at the time, Tamron won the battle. Focal length: What made me choose this one was that additional 20mm difference from the Tamron 70-300mm (150-500mm was too far of a length for my needs). I didn't want to always have to switch from this lens to my 24-70mm, when I mostly shoot around 50mm. Yes, sometimes this seems a little too close, but for landscape, it's perfect (see photos). Size: A bit clunky at times, but is on the lighter size when considering how large it is. I've used the 60-600mm from Sigma, and man is that thing H E A V Y. This is the perfect weight (all things considered) for hiking it around and taking photos without feeling like you're training for a marathon. Quality: From the structural stand point, this lens if very sturdy. Adjustment rings are smooth (for photography, not so much from a videography stand point) and structurally feels great. From an image perspective, I was surprised at the quality of the images and how quick it was to focus (at certain lengths). When I was near the 400mm length, I found it 60/40, 60 being in focus, but that issue came up during high movement when trying to follow a subject (car photo). Otherwise, the lens is quick to focus and produces great images. For reference, all my photos are taken on an a6400. Conclusion: If you're considering getting a variable zoom lens, this should definitely be on your consideration list, especially at its price point. No complaints here from purchasing it almost 6 months ago. ... show more

  • What a Surprise !
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
I am an avid photographer, for the "Dawn of the digital age" LOL , but I find my income from a different field. The lese I bought for myself, my own money etc. Tested it on Sony A7IV, in different condition, including a very long concert photo shoot in a concert hall (Orchestra), where I shot it all with this one lens (So all the "wrong" things for this lens: low light, short and long focal length, wide shots and distance portraits). I put the lense on manual mode, with Auto ISO. I actually could have left it at Shutter priority, as that is all I really needed. Personally I know I like a lens, when it disappears from my mind. When I stop even checking "was it able to stabilize the image at 1/40 @ 400mm ? " , or "was the focus good enough?" . when the only thing I had to do was to compose and decide what shatter speed was right for the shot I was using. Yes - ISO went up (heck I have a perfect portrait, of a friend across the entire concert hall, at recess, ISO went to 51200, shutter speed 1/60 with the A7IV and a bit noise reduction do you really care ? ) Post processing was the best surprise: Images sharp, the combo of camera IS & Lens IS, just nailed it in low light, and this lens just meant to work with the A7IV auto focus. Maybe I got a good copy, but usually I am not that lucky. This is just a really good lens for the Sony. Thanks ... show more

  • Fantastic Lens for the Price
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
I love this lens. I had moderate expectations for it but it beat every one of them. The images are very sharp, even when handheld at max zoom. I wouldn't use it for sports photography as the autofocus can be a bit slow in situations like that, but for my uses it works perfectly. It's a good catch all lens when hiking and travelling. Bonus points for having firmware that uses a USB-C cable instead of some proprietary dock. The weather sealing is nice too. ... show more

  • Loving my first 3rs party experiment
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
This is the first 3rd party lens I have tried in the e/fe universe. Very glad I gave it a chance. Good compression at higher zoom, unbelievable near-macro capability, and very nice bokeh from one end to the other if I do my part in constructing the shot. Not many lenses can give me frame-filling closeups of a single, tiny flower and also reach one end to the other of a football pitch. My copy is dead sharp. Was a bit slow in focus tracking out-of-the-box, but a firmware update improved that greatly with little fuss. The only way I could complain about this one is that it’s a bit slow for low-light, but I knew that going in. The smaller size, weight and price tag are well worth that trade off, and the odd 50-400 range is really dang convenient while walking around or traveling ... show more

  • A Wonderful Zoom Range
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
Edit on 3/1/23: In response to another review, I'd like to add that the Tamron lens I purchased has excellent image quality in all shooting modes right out of the box. Also, it included the latest firmware as well. No changes were necessary. You can shoot in any mode with confidence. ---------- The 50-400mm range of this lens is unprecedented, so far as I know. For many purposes I now have to carry only this single lens which makes me very happy. Also, this is an excellent choice if you have a high megapixel camera. Very sharp at all focal lengths at 61 megapixels. Build is very good, focus is quick, and the built-in stabilization is excellent. It has a 3 position customizable switch, takes a 67mm filter, and isn't too long or too heavy. This is a wonderful lens for the money. I'd buy it again in a heart-beat. ... show more

  • Extremely difficult to mount onto Sony A7IV
Size: Sony FE Mount Style: Lens Only
Most of my SONY lenses mount easily onto the camera but I could not mount this lens onto the camera without a lot of effort (Afraid to damage my camera). Also, this lens may suck a lot of air and dust into your camera when you extend and contract it. Will buy probably buy SONY again to avoid issues.
