  • Unleash Your Creativity and Capture the Unseen
The Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Super-Telephoto Lens is a true marvel that has transformed my photography experience. I paired this lens with my Canon EOS R series camera for the perfect match. The 100-500mm range is a wildlife photographer's dream, allowing me to capture feathered friends in their natural habitat with stunning clarity. Whether it's birds in flight or perched on a branch, this lens delivers exceptional results. I added the 1.5x lens extender (purchased on Amazon), which effectively turns this lens into an exceptional super telephoto without breaking the bank. Combined with my camera's sensor cropping, it effectively gives me 1000mm of up-close reach. This has opened up a world of possibilities, enabling me to get close-up shots of distant subjects like never before. Another favorite of mine is the selectable Image Stabilization (IS) modes, including one that improves the experience with Birds In Flight (BIF) photography. This mode has made capturing those moments of birds flying an absolute breeze. Quality and Durability: Canon's L-series has a solid reputation for quality and it shines through in this lens. The build quality is top-notch, and the materials used inspire confidence. I've taken this lens into challenging conditions, including dusty and damp environments, and it has held up admirably. The weather resistance is a huge plus, ensuring that I can shoot in various conditions without worry. Functionality and Performance: The autofocus, powered by Dual Nano USM motors, is incredibly fast and near-silent. Not only does this lens perform amazingly, it is also quiet. I find that the minimum focusing distance of 2.95ft allows for detailed shots, adding versatility to the lens's already impressive capabilities. The rotation-type zoom ring with torque adjustment provides precise control. User-Friendly and Design: The controls are intuitive, and I love the feel of the zoom ring in my hand. The sleek and professional aesthetics match perfectly with my Canon EOS R camera. Pros: - Exceptional telephoto range for wildlife and sports photography. - Selectable IS modes, improve image stabilization, especially for BIF. - Durable, weather-resistant build quality. - Fast and silent autofocus with Dual Nano USM. - Versatile minimum focusing distance for close-up shots. Cons: - The variable aperture (F4.5-7.1) may require adjusting ISO in low light conditions. I had no issues. - The lens's weight may require a sturdy tripod for extended use. It mounts easily! Value: While the Canon RF 100-500mm lens is an investment, it's worth every penny. The combination of superb optical performance, versatility, and durability justifies its price tag. Final Thoughts: In conclusion, the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Super-Telephoto Lens has exceeded my expectations. It's a must-have for wildlife enthusiasts, sports photographers, and anyone looking to level-up their photography game. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking exceptional performance and versatility. Thank you, Canon, for bringing happiness and inspiration into my photography journey, and I hope this lens does the same for others. ... show more

  • Expensive But High Quality
Have had this lens for a little over a month now. It's been incredible with the Canon EOS R5. The photos uploaded here have no filters and are unedited JPEG images. Wildlife photos look excellent and are very crisp. Can even get some decent pictures of planes or birds flying far up in the air. There is an exceptional level of detail even at 500mm. Highly recommended for anyone looking to get long distance shots of their subject(s). Pros: - High quality glass - Autofocus is quick - Very long distance zoom at 500mm - Still functionally useful at 100mm - Can be paired with an extender at the cost of a stop and a minimum of 300mm Cons: - Expensive - No locking mechanism on the zoom means that it is constantly sliding out while moving - No third party alternatives at the moment; since Canon is not allowing 3rd party glass for the R series ... show more

  • Best in Class
Canon took their class leading EF 100-400mm zoom and made lighter while giving it 100mm more reach. The RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 is so good that it was the reason I first started thinking about switching back to Canon after giving up on them about a decade ago. I'll just say that the reality as lived up to the hype. It is a great lens: sharp from one end of the zoom range to the other; relatively light weight; and fast focusing. That's not to say that everything is sunshine and roses. There are three common criticisms of this lens, two of which I think are valid. First is the fact that this lens only takes a teleconverter after it is zoomed out to 300mm. This means that you can't retract the lens barrel all the way in for transport without removing the teleconverter. This is an inconvenience. And this also means that there is very little overlap in the zoom range with and without a 1.4x teleconverter. You're either at 100-500mm or you're at 420-700mm. This could potentially cost you an image in a fast-moving situation. The second criticism is that it is too expensive for what it it. It is $300 more than the EF version it replaces. Personally, I'd pay $300 just for the 1/2 lb weight savings. That said, I can't deny it is more expensive. Finally, people look at the "7.1" in the 4.5-7.1 aperture range and get concerned about the speed of the lens. But the lens is only at 7.1 for the very end of its zoom range. For the part of the zoom range that is equivalent with the EF 100-400, the apertures are pretty close at similar focal lengths. Sometimes the old lens is slightly faster; sometimes the new RF version is a little faster. The bottom line is that I have no problem recommending this lens if it is within your budget. For both landscapes and wildlife I find it to be excellent. ... show more
