It is hard to find compatible hardware for the Synology devices. They don't support lots of USB devices, hard drives, and more. I would recommend finding a NAS with better device support. Also, they have so many tricks to prevent honoring the warranty. Don't buy this expecting to have good support or warranty help.     • Amazingly Loud fan noise + Amazing Performance

I was running out of space and instead of just buying more hard drives, I figured I might as well upgrade my system as well. I upgraded from the Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ to this RackStation RS1619xs+ for the win. Keep in mind this is a 19" deep and wide. So If you have a small rack, you might want to rethink this NAS. The other thing that might give you pause is that there is no support for SHR. Now that those are out of the way. Why should you upgrade to this NAS? There are a lot of NAS out there but Synology software always makes it an easy choice to select them for my storage needs. The intuitive interface and package are hard to beat. The hardware itself has an Intel Xeon D-1527 Quad-core. You can if you want to install a 10GbE/25GbE NIC. If you don't have a switch to support 10GbE, save your money, and get more ram instead. Speaking of ram, the RackStation RS1619xs+ supports up to 64 GB of it. So short story, long. I love this machine but wish it would not kill my eardrums. This is meant to be in an AV room and not in your livingroom. However pro users don't want to hear that. So while you buy this add a 3rd party fan to your shopping cart. You can thank me later. The hardware itself is decent when it’s working properly. Synology support on the other hand is absolute garbage. I’d you need a product that has support that’s there when you need it, don’t buy a single product from Synology. I’ve had to contact Synology twice for a hardware related issue that caused the server to be out of service. During both instances it took Synology upwards of 3 business days to even figure out what was causing the issue and even longer to repair and resolve it. Their support system is deeply flawed and no one at Synology cares. You can never speak to anyone after your issue has been assigned to someone. They all communicate through their ticket system and their typical response time is 24 hours to every single reply you make. So a simple exchange of answering their questions will take 24 business hours to respond to. ... show more

I like the cpu power and memory capacity on this 4 drive model. But why no support for SHR and SHR-2. I ended up with RADI 6 but confused why no SHR which is one of the reasons I like Synology. I also have a DS1019+ and three DS918+ all with SHR and SHR-2 support so why not on this high end unit.

The RS1619XS+ is a 1U rack unit with Intel XEON D-1527. It is a hot CPU in a small room. The original fan used in RS1619XS+ is Y.S Tech FD124028EB-P with a Maximum 16000 RPM with F and R (3rd wire function). If you switch to the Notorious Nactua Fan like you see in many posts or youtube video, you are replacing a 16000 RPM fan with a 5000 RPM fan. Think twice before you do that. If you want keep the 15000+ RPM, then there is no purpose to replace the fan as any fan with 10000+ RPM will have that kind of noise. I tried to switch to a 13000 RPM fan, the noise is the same. ... show more
