  • Expensive but fantastic if you don't mind the cost!
I was previously using the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS (https://smile.amazon.com/Cloud-Ultra-Network-Attached-Storage/dp/B01AWH05KK/) with 2 x 8 TB WD Red SATA drives in RAID 1 (mirrored disks). While that was cheap, it was not meeting my performance expectations. I have a ton of content (Audio, Video, Pics) stored on the WD NAS and it would struggle when I try to fast forward/backward and/or have multiple end points try to stream from it (like 2 TVs simultaneously). I realized I needed something more beefier and went with the more expensive DS720+ Pros: - The sheer number of things one can do with this thing is amazing. If WD was 2 out of 10 (in terms of features and functionality), I would rate the DS720+ a 9.5 out of 10! - I preferred DS720+ (over the cheaper DS220+) as it has the option to upgrade RAM/memory and NVME SSD for caching. This will keep me future proof for a long time (I hope!) - The UI is extremely rich with features and options and one can spend hours figuring/trying things out. I prefer this over the more simplistic solutions that treat people as if they are ignorant and don't know what they are doing. - The number of apps one can try in the Synology ecosystem is huge and most are free! - Had to destroy the data on the 2 X 8 TB WD red drives as Synology doesn't recognize the WD file storage format but that is understandable. Took a backup of my data onto another external drive first and restored it once I reconfigured the drives in the Synology Storage Manager app. The process was slow but it was fine as it was a one time affair (had to copy 5 TB worth of data). - While "Quickconnect" is a great idea to allow access to the NAS data from anywhere on the internet, I don't see the need for that in my use case so I didn't bother to try that out. Don't need another attack vector that I need to worry about! - Added 1 x 16GB RAM DIMM (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H4XNNXK/) and 2 x 1 TB Samsung NVME SSDs (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08V83JZH4/) and that really seem to help with buffering and performance in general. The process to do these hardware upgrades was really simple and anyone can do this. I know this configuration (esp. the 16 GB RAM) is unsupported by Synology (check out YT videos for more info) but I didn't see any issues so far. - Like the 2 x 1 GB NIC cards option as one can get more throughput out of the system. Better to setup a static IP for each of the MAC addresses so it is easy to access them over your LAN. - I can probably list a few more positives but the list has been long already! Cons: - Synology only "supports" their own products for upgrade (RAM, NVME). These "products" are extremely expensive as compared to other reputable brands (e.g. Samsung). While I didn't see any issues so far with using non-Synology products for upgrade the NAS so far, it would be nice if they also "certify" other reputable brands. But, that is too much to ask for as it affects their profits! - Warning: running non-Synology products does void your warranty, as per Synology! Unless you are business that is worried about using "certified products" and/or "supported configuration", for regular consumers like us, it shouldn't matter as long as it works :) YMMV though! - Looks like only drive sizes up to 16TB are supported. I am not worried about crossing that limit anytime soon but wanted to call that out in case your storage needs are around that limit Overall, I highly recommend it, if you don't mind paying extra for all the bells and whistles! ... show more

  • Great buy!
I would have loved to have given this purchase 5/5 stars, but there is one big issue... Synology's own Knowledge Base/Tutorials are crap, and setting this thing up is NOT intuitive in any measure - not if you want it secure, operating at peak efficiency, and performing everything you need it to. Practically everything I needed to setup - PLEX, Synology Photos, or whatever, was a chore. Sure, somethings were quite easy to setup, but most things weren't due to lack of information inside the apps, the UI, or Synology's own KB. I had to resort to watching YouTube videos due to a lack of information from Synology, but more frustrating - a lack of intuitive controls. I highly urge you to view the videos by SpaceRex, who has an entire series of videos that will prove very helpful - you'll even learn about stuff you were unaware of. Now that I do have it setup the way I want, I'm amazed at all of the options open to me. I was simply thinking of this as a network storage device that could also serve as my PLEX server and store miscellaneous files. That alone should have told me that it could act as a server for pretty much anything else. So, am I happy with this purchase - yep, but just a bit frustrated at Synology's own lack of guidance. I see this as more of an engineer who wrote the help files without letting a non-engineer reinterpret them for normal users scenario - and I'm familiar with setting up servers. You could argue it is just getting to know the UI, but again, a lot of things simply weren't intuitive... My only other issue...I now wish I'd purchased a 4 bay enclosure to being with. ... show more

  • Fairly happy with the DS720+, although software is not as good as I thought it would be
It does what I bought it for: provide network storage. I've tried a few packages as well (Synology Notes & Office mainly), but find the additional software packages rather disappointing, but again, I didn't buy it for that. I run the NAS with two 14TB Toshiba drives as well as two Samsung 980 NVME M.2 drives as cache. Performance is excellent in that setup. The main reasons for "just" a three star rating at: 1) The build quality is seriously cheap. It's a cheap plastic housing that amplifies the rattling noise from a seeking drive. The slides are pure plastic and if you plan to use these often, there is a good likelihood you'll break one. The doors on the SSD slots are cheapo plastic as well and the drives themselves are held in with plastic clips that feel likely to break. I don't plan to change my drives in the next few years and I'm not planning on touching the NVME drives either, so it's not a big issue for me, but I'm REALLY disappointed in the overall feel of the housing. 2) The additional software is not great (this is on DSM7.1). As soon as I installed some of the packages (namely Notes and Office, both Synology products) the NAS woke the HDDs from Hibernation every 20 to 30 minutes – like clockwork actually. I had to remove all installed packages to get HDD hibernation back and even now it's not reliable, even when I disconnect the network and have no tasks configured It only wakes up every few hours now, so it's tolerable. The quality of the Notes package is meh, every cheap notes app you get on any of the relevant app stores is MILES ahead. Cannot recommend. The office package might be usable for some, but it doesn't work well for me. I'll keep to either actual Office documents (MS Office, Apple Apps, ...) on the NAS drives or just use Google docs. 3) The available logs in the interface are pretty much useless. I was trying to debug the HDD hibernation issue and it was just trial and error. If I find a log entry telling me the drive had to be started, I'd also expect a REASON (e.g. client connect, web connect, WOL, whatever – just give me SOMETHING). 4) I wish it had 2.5Gbit/s ethernet. It's okay for me, but we are only two people working in the network, so the load is low, but I still wish I could saturate fast drives (e.g. if cached to/from NVME drive) – come on, I have two 1TB cache drives in there, these could actually be used better. 5) The RAM is on the low side. I recommend getting a RAM module (still waiting for mine). I have hit high memory utilization a few time with just playing around, not even a single docker container running. Starting out with 2GB is just a bit too low. 4GB would be great, especially if it was a removable module (which it isn't as far as I know). Reasons why it's still good and why I'm reasonably happy with it: 1) File transfers are very reliable, zero issues there. I still have to test out encryption, but I don't expect too much trouble since the CPU can handle it and the network interface is slow anyways. 2) It supports all the protocols I need (SMB, AFP, NFS). 3) As silly as it sounds, but I like the fact that I can dim the LEDs and even turn them off based on a schedule. So, overall a decent NAS, but if you are thinking of buying today, I'd wait for the next generation. Maybe that one has 2.5Gbit ethernet. ... show more

  • Very powerful!
I planned to get the DS223 but changed my mind at the last minute. This is the best NAS you can get especially if you're in the content creation business. The addition of two NVMe cache slots is superior!
