I read through so many reviews on so many different lawn mower options before deciding to pull the trigger and purchase this. I have not had a lawn in over 20 years, so it has been a long time to own one. I wanted to go towards the 'eco friendly' options more out of selfishness if you ask me. I did not want to have to even remember to go get gas for a fuel powered one so that was off the list immediately. Move on to battery or 'man power' (this one). The cost was another factor but did not make or break my decision. I work remote and don't get out much so I ultimately chose this to force myself to exercise even if only a little bit. (yep hate exercise). I was a bit concerned as I was afraid I had waited to long to buy this to get my lawn mowed as it was getting tall in some places. Between the reviews and even the descriptions they do not recommend using this on taller grass, but I did. So here are the details: I have roughly 1/3 an acre or so of grass to cut. I have a wild mix of seeded/pre-purchased grass sections (home was remodeled when i bought it) as well as the back half of random grasses and flowers and weeds. Yard is uneven terrain but no hills (lots of dips and bumps). I adjusted the blades to the highest setting to start. The tall sections were rough to cut, taking more 'man power' that normal. However, it still cut it eventually! I quickly realized that if you take angled swipes/passes and just take it down a little bit at a time it works much better and goes much faster. The rest of the yard was pretty easy. Some of the taller weed stalks didn't get cut, the mower just passed over them basically. As I am not looking for a 'perfectly manicured lawn' this didn't matter to me at all. I would say how long this took, but this was my first time mowing in over 20 years so I will keep that to myself! Going forward I will keep up on it and it should be easy like the lower patches I did go over. Decent exercise and overall pretty easy. Does it cut uneven? Sure, my lawn is uneven. Did I care? Nope because I am just happy to have a lawn. Easy to assemble, yup just read the instructions and attach the handle. I did have to adjust the blades as recommended but that was very easy and in the instructions as well. Although it does make some 'noise', you cannot hear it inside the house or anything like that. My dog is very afraid of any and all loud noises, has always been this way no matter what we tried. She walked right along with me while I was cutting the grass and she didn't mind the little noise it did make. Bottom line, I think this was a great investment for myself and my home. Lastly, I did not use the catcher as I did not care about dropping the grass clippings on my lawn. I read up on that outside of Amazon and depending on your yard, your environment and the type of grass and such you have, leaving more than 1" of cut grass will not end your lawn. Depending on all of those things you might not want to leave more than an inch of clippings but for all of my particulars I felt comfortable leaving more than an inch of clippings on my lawn. If my perspective changes over time I will update my review. Side not unrelated but might make you laugh - you should put sunblock on the tops/backs of your hands....

I was worried to buy this product because there was a lot of bad reviews about this. My review maybe little premature since I just got this unit and only used it once. And I will update if I change my mind later but this thing works as expected and accomplishes a good job for small grass yard I have. Assembly is easy enough and mowing process is fairly simple. However it does require some power behind pushing especially at the initial push of each time. I would say this will be a good, light workout. Once it goes, It goes fairly well from one end to the other. While you cannot really turn it well to go different direction. Also when you are an uneven ground or if ground is slippery, the wheel might not catch on very well. On those spots, you just have to go back little bit and start their like you would with the mud or snow when driving. At the end of the day, this is manual push unit and you should not expect this to behave like motorized one. Only thing I'm not super happy about is the fact the grass flies around everywhere during cutting process and it does not really fall in the bag. What's the product video on this and you will see it's flying around and that's exactly what you got. There are times when Wheels get stuck. I had it one stop by little cable ties That was laying on the ground. The other time it was just a ball of mud. So you just reverse the blade little bit and shake the machine for mud to fall off then you go ahead again. Most of negative stuff I mentioned here are things that I expected from manual mowing unit and I think those are reasonable, expected downside, that's why I give this a full five star.

(20150428) When I was growing up in the 1960s, we owned these types of lawn mowers. I remember my grandfather fixing one when he came to the USA for the first time in about 40 years. My mother was frantic that she was out of cooking oil. Anyway, they worked extremely well in the environment that I live in and am using this Sun Joe Mow Joe MJ501M in. That's why I purchased this type of lawn mower. I liked the idea of no gas, oil, or pull ropes breaking. Absolutely beautiful looking machine; very easy to assemble; very easy to use; extremely easy to follow instruction book... BUT this lawn mower, to my utter surprise, does not cut grass! I was able to use one of these just fine at the age of five, but not this one in my 50s! The blades roll like there's no tomorrow, and yet it only flattens down the grass. I did the paper cut test, and it passed with flying colors. I checked to see if the blades were too loose or too tight; no adjustment needed. I adjusted the height of the cut; no change. It won't cut high grass; it won't cut low grass; it won't cut anything but loose foxtails that fall off the stem just by blowing them with my mouth. Awaiting advice from customer service. I have videos, but no pictures. If anyone has any advice on how to get this thing to cut grass "PLEASE!!!" let me know. (20150430) Spoke to Sun Joe's customer service, and they are making an even exchange, even paying for return shipping. Very impressed with the company. Hopefully, this was just a single defective product. We'll see when I get the new one. (20150507) Received 20-Inch MRM (MJ502M instead of MJ501M). It works better in that it cuts grass... some, but still not what I remember when manual lawn mower handles were higher than the top of my five year old head. I still give this only one star because if the handles reached above my head five decades ago and cut this type of grass which was as high as my ankles back then, more modern versions should be able to cut just as well if not better.

If you’re afraid of hard labor then don’t buy it. That said, it’s easy to use after you get the hang of it. The protecting handle ripped 2 months into using it. The grass collector bag is starting to lose its grip so that feels like a waste of money. It was easy to put together. Careful, the blades won’t cut the lawn if a rock or sticks gets stuck in it. Please wear gloves, I cut myself because I was stupid to think I didn’t need them to mow the lawn.

Fully convinced any negative review has been made by 20 year old kids who have never had to use a rusty reel mower to mow their neighbors lawns for money growing up! I love how wide the reel is. I live in Florida and our grass is really thick. Iv been using the reel mower to mow around our 2 year Olds favorite play spots to keep her safe from snakes as the deck is broken on our john deer and we have to truck in my inlaws mower to get it all cut about once a month. We have 4.8 acres and iv been using the reel mower on about half of it and it's been great! If you're struggling to push it try adjusting the angle you're pushing from and eat your Wheaties in the morning. Yes it's heavy and yes it can be difficult to push. If you don't want that struggle get a self propelled mower. Honestly for a reel mower this one works like a dream. I really feel like most people want this to be something it just isn't. I do suggest giving the reel a but of oil before you start out because the squeaking is a bit rough but as far as reel mowers go this one is great and gets the job done!

The morning I was taking my gas powered lawnmower in the shop, I made a hasty decision and purchased this product before reading the reviews in light of the 4 star average rating. I wanted a back up mower for the 1-2 times/year that my lawnmower needs servicing. This product wouldn't take up extra space in my garage either, yay! And yay for exercise and environmental friendliness!!! The product arrived a day earlier than expected. The packaging was great, assembly was great! (So there are the 2 stars) The only height setting that even seems feasible is the high setting as you will have zero lawn left on the lowest setting,(if you can get the mower to work at all on the lowest setting). I think that maybe the bolts on the wheels could be adjusted, but they are very hard to get to and not mentioned in the instructions as a way to adjust the height. I haven't been able to get the bolts off, and you're risking cutting yourself on the blades even trying to make that adjustment, well in theory as the blades are fairly dull when you get it. The high setting is absolutely scalping my lawn. I think that if the height could be better adjusted, it might help with the issues that we all are having cutting longer grass and weeds. For anyone who is buying a spare mower, we need to be able to cut grass that's not at its prime. It works great if you're cutting already cut grass. But I don't think that is what most of us are doing. I did have some success when I only tried to mow a 4 inch strip of longer grass with an already mowed section. I could get the mower to at least move when I did that. But I was still needing to back it up multiple times and re-mow that section over and over. But, I did get it to cut after a lot of effort. I wanted to really give this thing a chance after reading some of the reviews with usage guidance. IF I could get the height to where I wanted it??? Everyone is 100% accurate about it getting stuck on the tiniest of sticks. Someone mentioned 'toothpick' and I removed sticks smaller than a toothpick. This makes it incredibly difficult to use. Everyone is correct about the blade not being sharp out of the box. I think that if the blade was sharp and didn't scrape against the metal, didn't get stuck on tiny sticks and was the proper height, I could really like this mower. I don't mind emptying the basket. If you're keeping this mower, I think that just using your hands to scoop out the grass is much easier than detaching the basket each time. And the grass won't really fly everywhere as long as you have the basket cleaned out, which needs to happen very often. This is the least of your worries though! If you are ok with the forward backward forward mowing method, you're good with removing sticks every 2-3 feet depending on how many trees are in your yard, and you're ok with an extremely low cut that may 100% fry your lawn in the summer while you're waiting for your lawnmower to get out of the shop, then this is the mower for you, otherwise, I KNOW you would be a much happier person using a weed eater on your lawn while you wait, and you can still get the upper body work out that way.

This is my second manual reel mower. My first one was fine but this is, I feel, a better design. The mower cuts really well. My other model has straight blades and I will say that the curved blades on this one do a significantly better job. No comparison. This mower can manage in deeper grass which is a killer for the straight blade style. Also it is nice at 20 inches. My other is 18 and it may not sound like much, but it is. This is a little bit heavier and with how much it eats at a pass it can be tough to push through the thicker stuff. But, I'm not a big person and don't have much weight to put behind it. The wheels are fairly well sealed up around the axles, and this helps keep the longer grasses from tangling up the drive, which is a huge pain if you are a little lazy and don't mow regularly.... like me. ALSO, I seriously doubted, even laughed at the grass catcher. Never thought that it would serve any purpose. I was dead wrong. I am simply amazed at how much grass it collects. Worth every penny and a great purchase. I did however just get it, so I can't say anything about how it will last.
