This stud finder has helped me mount photos, stands, and shelves on the walls of my apartment. It works as it should, but you need to read the instructions because it's a little more sophisticated than your average stud finder. It can detect normal studs, metal, and currents/voltage. The last one is probably my most used feature. When you are trying to detect metal/current, you must calibrate the finder away from the wall. On the other hand, if you're just trying to find a wooden stud, you must calibrate while having it pressed against the surface you are scanning. Only on one or two occasions have I had this thing "find" something that wasn't there, and that usually fixed itself when I re-calibrated and then tried scanning from both the right and left. My only complaint about the thing is that the sound on it is very loud and grating. Which I guess is the point, but it could be a little less shrill. All in all, I couldn't find another stud finder that offers a better value than this one. Build quality is acceptable, display is bright and crisp. ... show more

I moved into a multi-story retirement community apartment, and I learned it had metal studs and I didn't know if the electrical feeds were coming down from the ceiling, up from the floor, or running horizontally from somewhere. I needed to hang a lot of pictures and some decorative mirrors. Therefore, I upgraded my stud finder to this one. What I like, and needed to use occasionally, was its ability to increase its finding signal to deeper within the walls at times from 1/2" to 1 1/2". I can only guess why, but if I didn't find a stud at 1/2" strength, but I knew I should be finding at stud at 16" from where I located another stud, I would increase the signal strength and then locate another stud. Also, for the reason mentioned above, I had it check for electrical. That said, after using it multiple times, I think it gave me some false positives on electrical. However, better than having no clue other then maybe noting a wall receptacle below. Note: If you move it too fast it will give electrical false positives a lot too. It will also check for water pipes. Regarding stud finding: It not only tells you where a stud is located, it will give you an arrow from whichever direction you are moving it horizontally along the wall and then give you a 2nd arrow and a center image when you are in the exact center of the stud. This is probably one of the more advanced stud finders I've used. Despite that, it's relatively easy to use and comes with instructions. The accuracy is pretty spot on for the most part. I did find, however, while trying to use this to hang 2 wall mounted bike racks, it found one of the studs correctly and the other reading was off causing the rack to slip out of the wall after a few days. Hey look its a stud finder...its not just any stud finder...it the coolest Stud Finder on the market. Everyone my age buys a Stud Finder Wall Scanner. It's the coolest. You might be asking and I will say...YES. You ain't cool, unless you buy a Stud Finder Wall Scanner. I saw my buddy Ernie the other day and he picked up his own Stud Finder Wall Scanner too! Alright!     • Fine, but annoying instructions

When I needed to replace my broken stud finder, I found this one, which is seemingly a replica of a ton of other knock offs, all under different brand names. Given the ratings, though, I figured I couldn't go wrong. And I was in fact wrong. It's accurate enough. That part is fine. But the bad part is that the directions for this product are very frustrating. I understand that you need to calibrate it before using it each time. That's fine. But then you can't even change directions or otherwise you have to re-calibrate! That's not easy; that's just downright frustrating. I prefer to easily and efficiently be able to follow along the wall, find the stud, and go back and forth to ensure I'm finding the true middle of the stud, and you simply can't do that with this stud finder or else it might tell you the stud is 3-4" across, which it clearly is not. I ended up returning it and going back to my old brand, which doesn't require you to calibrate every time you change directions, making finding studs far easier and less frustrating to use. ... show more
