  • I found this tool easy to setup and use.
Style: Pin Type Moisture Meter
Like the simplicity. i don't have another meter so i can't verify the accuracy but seasoned/dry wood gives a low moisture percent and unseasoned/wet wood has a high moisture percent as expected. I'm using it to decide which wood gets burned this season and what spends another year drying out.

  • Worthless for Seasoned White Oak, Hard Maple, and Shagbark Hickory
Style: Pin Type Moisture Meter
I gave it one star, but it is entirely possible that some could have given it five stars. For my needs it was semi-worthless! Purchased meter to determine moisture content for firewood. Problem 1. Could not get the cap off to facilitate the probes! Work around was to use a small piece of rubbery nonskid draw liner material to remove cap. Problem 2. Could not make even a single measurement. Probes would not penetrate seasoned White Oak log. Tried testing the end of log, side of log with the grain, and side of log across the grain. No readings at all (perhaps moisture content was outside the lower range of the meter). Work around might be to drill two small holes for the probes, but that would be just too much to contend with. Had a log of seasoned Shagbark Hickory and another of Maple (unsure of Maple species) but no luck here either. Tried measuring the moisture percentage in composite fuel bricks. They were manufactured in Canada using White Pine. They had been left outside of the hardware store in rainy weather, hence I was able to purchased the bricks at a bargain value. The probes penetrated the white pine bricks very easily but still no moisture reading indicated. The only way I could get a reading is with the supplied calibration standard located in the cap. The meter did indicate it was accurately calibrated. Out of frustration, I tried sticking the probes lightly into my forearm. My forearm had a moisture reading of 17.9 %. Not really sure what this measurement means? To use the meter properly one has to select one of 8 calibration settings: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. A table is provided which contains over 180 species of wood that is correlated to the correct calibration setting that should be selected. To be sure, the manufacturer went through a lot of trouble to produce an instrument should be very accurate. However, all I wanted is a rough indication of which firewood logs I should pull off the pile to burn and which logs should remain longer on the pile! Probably the meter would work fine for damp softwoods, building materials, and maybe even for some softer hardwoods, but not dense (hard) seasoned hardwoods. Final note: I returned this item using an Amazon hub locker for which I did not even know existed until I went through Amazon's Return process. There was a hub locker located less than one mile from my house. It had been somewhat of a pain in the past to return anything since my post office is about five miles from my home. I do not own a smart phone, but had no problem in printing out the bar code on my desktop computer during the return process. Having no idea of what to expect, I drove to a local gas station where the hub locker was located. It was inside the gas station (out of the weather) with a Kiosk display. Still, not really sure of what to do, I touched the display and placed the printed bar code under it scanner. A locked door popped open. How the Hub locker knew what sized locker door to open, I do not know; but my labeled protective package easily fitted inside the compartment. I closed the locker door shut. There was really no indication that the process was completed at this point so I hit a few keys at random to overwrite anything that might have been inadvertently left by me (I really do not believe this action was necessary but I do become leery when doing anything with computers or Kiosk. This happen on Saturday (Day before Superbowl Sunday). Checked on-line Monday to see if I may have messed up somehow; the status of the return indicated "was in process". Apparently, everything went so easy and quickly it sort of shocked me. The one minor annoyance I had with Amazon returns, has now been completely eliminated. An annoyance I had in the past with Amazon is finding packages that were left on top (or tied to) my mail box which is located 300 feet from my home. The package was just sitting out there waiting for some thief to steal it. Another problem I have had was I ordered printer ink, which had been left at my mailbox overnight. Well, living in New England during wintertime, means temperatures can and do drop well below freezing. What may have been a perfectly good product, had to be returned because the contents were likely damage because of severe cold weather. It appears to me, that Amazon's Hub Locker, located in a heated area, has solved both of the above problems. It really amazed me how Amazon knew what has troubled many of their customers and went through quite bit of thought on how to go about solving the problem. I have no affiliation with Amazon whatsoever, but will give then 5 stars in the way they make shopping on-line safe and easy. ... show more

  • Works great to see if your wood is seasoned properly
Style: Pin Type Moisture Meter
Easy to use, comes with instructions and its seems accurate. We use it before we burn wood since better seasoned burns better and is less smoky and cause less creosote.

  • Calibrating the Meter
Style: Pinless Moisture Meter
The instructions are incorrect. It says with the power off, first press the Power/Mode button and then the Down arrow until you see Density --2 with the two horizontal solid double arrow below it. The image shows first pressing the Up arrow and then the Power/Mode button. Neither is correct. 1. First press and hold the Down arrow and then press and hold the Power/Mode button. The meter will display Density --2 without the two double arrow icons (See 1st image). 2. Holding the meter in the air on either side and away from any object, (i) press and release the Up arrow or (ii) press and hold the Up arrow and then the Power/Mode button and release both buttons. Both (i) and (ii) produce the same result. The meter will display a check mark and 0.0%, showing the calibration is complete (See 2nd image). ... show more

  • It seems like it's good, but I don't have anything to compare it against....
Style: Pin Type Moisture Meter
Simple to use, easy to read, and comes with replacement pins. It seems accurate, but I can't calibrate it and can't compare it to anything to see? So far, the readings I'm getting are "reasonable".
