I'm not a Handyman by any stretch of the imagination. But when I decided to mount my new TV to the wall, I needed to pick up a stud finder. I usually buy products based on their price and features. This bad boy was inexpensive and had all the features I was looking for, being able to detect studs at 1/2'', 1'', and 1 1/2'' depths, detect metal, and detect current. It was perfect because finding the right location to hang my TV presented unforeseen issues when I realized I'd be drilling into the wall. You can always knock on the wall and listen for a hollow sound to tell where the stud isn't at, but there is no way to find the dead center and you may end up drilling into wires. The calibration is easy, you just hold down the left button on the finder, wait for it to calibrate, and then slide the finder along the wall in any direction. It has arrows that point you in the right direction so that you find the exact center of the stud. It even beeps and gives you a continuous tone when you find the center. This was perfect for what I needed. There is a live Wire Warning detection feature that works in all modes and has a flashing indicator that comes on when detecting a live, unshielded wire. This little safety feature was comforting since I didn't know exactly what I'd be drilling into. Why didn't I have this before? It's so easy to use! It has modes to detect wood and metal studs up to 1/2 in., 1 in., 1 1/2 in., metal up to 2.36 in., and unshielded AC wires up to 2 in. deep. The stud detector has arrows to direct you to the center of the stud, and when it reaches the center, it displays "CENTER" on the screen. It also has soft pads on the back of the detector so it does not scratch your wall. It doesn't come with a battery, so make sure you have a 9V on hand, but it does come with a mini screw driver to open the battery compartment. Great purchase! And if you've ever put a nail through a copper water pipe or into an electrical wire behind the drywall, you'll know how valuable it is! Very comprehensive instructions for a highly capable device. Once you get the hang of holding the side "scan" button all of the time (from calibration and all during sensing) the detector works seemingly flawlessly. I tried it on many walls plus paneling and it really made identification of the center of studs easy. The display is very intuitive and the many modes of operation makes the detector very flexible. Although I already have a stud finder, I wanted a second one for our winter home. I have only tested it on drywall, but found it be be quite accurate and will duplicate readings. It found wooden studs and electrical wiring with no problem. I found it easy to setup and read and has multiple scanning modes. If I had any complaint, it should have come with a battery. I can't locate my other stud finder, which is probably 20 years old, so picked this one up. I have to say these are way better than what I had. I really like the live wire detection as well, which is a great safety feature.
