Not gonna lie, the 4-star review is only because I don't know what the heck I was doing. Long story short, my little DIY project ended in disaster because I didn't quite undertand what the device was telling me. But I can assure you, it works as described. First off, I have a confession. I purchased this product almost a year ago. I had it in the garage and it fell behind some boxes and I looked for it but must have been distracted by a someone jingling their keys or holding a shiny object. Actually I was convinced my kid "borrowed it". Apparently the stud finder, lost and disoriented wandered the vast and dangerous world that is my garage for almost a year. During a re-organizing project of the garage the other day, I come across a box, un-opened with plastic still intact. I flipped it over and read "Wall Stud Finder Model: TH510. "HELL YEAH!!" I was beyond STOKED and as I apologized to my son for calling him a Dirty F-ing Thief for a year, I ripped open the box put the included 9 volt battery in it and started immediately playing with it. First I had to do the ol' Stud Finder test on myself. (Dad Joke) after receiving confirmation that "Yes" i'm still a stud, I went to show my son. He was nowhere to be found. Probably mad cause of the thief remark, oh well. TIME TO LOOK FOR STUFF BEHIND WALLS!!! This stud finder is capable of locating wood joists, studs, beams up to depths of 1.2 inches behind drywall. After calibrating the finder I tested it with a piece of drywall with exposed 2x4's so I was able to see when and where the finder indicated the edges and center of the wood. It was pretty much spot on. There is also a deep mode that scans deeper but I didnt test that. Another feature that is really cool is the live wire detector. During your stud search if you pass over any live wires it signals you with a bright red light and beep noise. Remember, Safety First! The finder also can locate metal studs, metal rebar. It is easy to calibrate and has a easy to read LCD screen that shows you the center and edges of the material you are looking for. There are 3 different modes in which you can use to scan different depths for studs. Mode 1 is for 1/2 inch Mode 2 is for 1inch and Mode 3 is 1 1/2 inch depths. Works on a variety of surfaces textured walls, acoustic ceilings, to wood flooring and drywall over plywood sheathing. By the time you read this I guarantee there will be a Tv on a wall mount in every room of my house, the garage and backyard patio. "Well That seems unnecessary" you say? And you are absolutely right. But I have a new toy and im going to use it and I will be very confident when I drill into my walls to mount that 65 inch tv in the bathroom. Confident that I am drilling exactly where that bolt needs to be for an absolute strong and secure TV mount. Glad I found you again little stud finder. Don't believe the marketing for this product; it simply doesn't find any studs. You are better off tapping on your wall to find a solid sound, then measuring in 16" increments to find other studs. This device is ineffective. Update: I was using it wrong. My fault! It seems to be pretty effective, when used properly. I’m a dum-dum! ... show more

This stud finder is the first one I've owned that actually works well. It is very good at finding studs and the ability to detect A/C power lines is a very nice bonus. If your walls are quite thick or if there is stuff like paneling in the way (I have paneling), you may have to play with the stud size option and move pretty slowly. It will, however, find your studs reliably and the "center" detection appears to be spot-on. ... show more

I needed to secure a TV mount to the wall and therefore needed a stud finder. My old stud finder, which is a completely different brand, was not working so I thought I would give this one a try. It worked well and I was able to get my task completed. The stud finder was simple to use. There is a mode button on the front which cycles thru the different objects for it to detect. The first three modes were for wood studs of various thickness, followed by metal stud, and AC. There is also a button on the side for calibration. There is a short bit of instructions that came with it and worth reading. I only tried the 1 1/2 wood stud option over drywall so my review is in regards to it. Before looking for wood studs I used the calibration button to calibrate the unit (per the instructions). You need to hold it up to the wall for the calibration to work. There are multiple bars on the lcd which count down to let you know when calibration is complete. I didn't time how long calibration took but it was just a few seconds. You need to be aware that when you calibrate you don't want to have it over a wood stud. So if after you calibrate you are getting odd results try to calibrate on a different part of the wall. This is very similar to the other stud finder that I had. I then slid it across the wall with the unit pointed up to the ceiling. I moved it at a slow pace and before too long it found a wood stud. There are arrows on the lcd screen to point which direction is center and also it tells you when you hit the edge and when you hit center. Once you find the stud you cannot depend on these readings to be 100% accurate. This is also similar to the other unit I had and I think you will have the same result with any stud finder. What you want to do once you find the wood stud is to use a very small drill bit (I used a 1/16) and drill a series of holes to find the edge of the wood stud. This is the only way to know for sure where center is. When you drill a hole past the edge of the wood stud you will be able to push the drill bit into the wall after you have drilled thru the dry wall. If you are drilling into a wood stud you will not be able to push it into the wood of course so you should be able to feel the difference. I did have a few false positives where it detected a wood stud where there wasn't one. When that happened I recalibrated and tried again with success. The reason that I knew that there wasn't a stud is because I didn't expect one to be so close to the other wood stud. I have had this same experience with my other stud finder as well so I don't expect this to be too uncommon. Like I said above I was able to secure my TV mount to the wall with the help of this stud finder so I am happy with it and have added it to my tool chest for future projects. ... show more
