  • Best hand sharpener, period
There are better sharpeners- the $200 Oregon power sharpener comes to mind- and there are plenty of cheaper sharpeners, but I don’t think anything even comes close to the Stihl 2-in-1 for effectiveness, ease of use, and value. I bought mine after reading glowing reviews and hearing endorsements from friends who do a lot of woodcutting, and I was not disappointed. It requires no setup, no adjustments, and no calibration- just clamp your saw (or just tighten the chain) and start filing. Unlike any other consumer sharpener, it simultaneously sharpens the cutting tooth and files the height-setting tooth in one pass. At $40-45 it’s more than most hand sharpeners, but it’s still cheaper than 2 or 3 new chains. I gave mine its first test today on my Homelite 16” saw that had been dulled when I cut through an old dead tree with a big dirt filled inclusion. It took me maybe five minutes to sharpen the chain, and afterward it cut like new- maybe better than new. Any drawbacks? Just one that I can think of: It’ll only work on one sized chain, which is not an issue if you only own one saw, or if your saws share the same size chain. This one (a 3/8-p) fits my existing saws, so I’ll have to buy another when I get the new Stihl I’ve been looking at. Given my experience with this one, I’m happy to spend the money on another. Update: I bought a second one today in .325 at my local Stihl dealer, along with a new Stihl MS251-C-BE. I needed a second one as the new saw uses a different tooth size than my other saws. I also learned that even though Stihl dealers don’t discount Stihl branded products, the sharpeners are $9-10 cheaper there than on line. ... show more

  • Does what it should
I have one of these for my 325 chain, i bought it at the same time i bought my new saw at the Stihl dealer. I have not received this one yet but I assume it will work just like the one I already own. I bought this Stihl brand 2-in-1 sharpener because I know it works the way it was designed to. I do not know if the other less expensive brands do the job that this one does? This uses 2 round files and 1 flat file. It will only go together 1 way correctly so if the opening end wont close easily and neatly than you got a file in the wrong way. The instructions wont tell you in the detail that I am right now. It took me about 15 minutes to figure it out the 1st time. When I get this new one from Amazon it will take me less than 1 minute to put it together and use it. Once you get it right you are a journeyman and will be able to show your friends how easily and great it works. Using it, it can set on your chain 4 different ways but only 1 way will be correct. It sharpens the teeth and will also lower the raker to the right height at the same time. This works for me! Without this wonderful tool you must lower the raker in a 2nd step. I clamp my bar (and saw) in a vice at home so this works easily. If I needed to resharpen using this tool while sitting on my tailgate out in the forest, (or on a log) im certain that I will be glad that i had this tool instead of a cheap off brand sharpener. I have already recommended this to more than 1 friend. The bench-vice is the easy way so do your best to get a vice for your home workshop or garage. I use a 4" good quality brand vice, a 6" might even be more secure. Another good piece of advise is order a new spare chain when you order this. That way you have 2 sharp chains when you head out AND you can sharpen BOTH when you get home in the warmth of your home work shop. This tool is only for a 3/8 P" chain. I had to buy another separate tool for my 325 chain. I hope that this will help someone. ... show more

  • Does the trick. Easy to use
This is the second sharpener that I have purchased. The first one worked well, and this one was purchased for a chainsaw with a different pitch. I loaned it to a neighbor. He was happy with the results. His exact words were "It did the trick!" It is easy to use, but I recommend that you watch one of the many tube videos for instructions. It's much clearer than those that come with the unit. ... show more

  • Best thing since sliced bread
Wow, I didn’t have high hopes for this but figured I’d it could speed up sharpening my chain I’d try it. Holy cow this thing is great, 3 strokes per tooth and I’m back to cutting in under 5 mins.

  • This tool makes sharpening easy
The tool is really easy to use and works as advertised. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the very cheap vinyl storage pouch it comes in was ripped on arrival. I decided to keep it anyway.

  • Like cheating
This thing makes chain saw sharpening a breeze! It cuts well and the files are replaceable. It's a bit overpriced as compared to others here on Amazon, but the flies 'could' be of better quality. Have not purchased a cheaper one to compare.

  • Very fast and makes chains sharp!
I bought this sharpener to keep my chains sharp while cutting firewood for the year. I have a 20" bar on my Poulan saw, 78 teeth. I can sharpen the whole chain in about 8 to 10 minutes depending how bad the teeth are. It's very easy to use once you get the hang of it. I usually clamp the whole saw into my bench vice just to make things even easier when sharpening. The sharpness of the teeth that you get with this device is excellent, makes the chains cut just like new. Would highly recommend this for anyone who wants a quick, affordable, and easy way to sharpen your chains. ... show more
