  • Good controller when working, involved setup and somewhat shaky connection
Regarding ergonomics, the casing and buttons feel very similar to an xbox one controller though the d-pad and left analog stick are swapped like with ps4. I believe I followed the instructions from another review to setup the connection via the device manager the first time I used it. Enjoyable once it's working. I originally wrote a much harsher review because after using the controller again after a few months of disuse I was experiencing a problem where the controller would disconnect maybe half a dozen times per hour and wouldn't reconnect until I had cleared the controller memory and pairing entry on the OS (process outlined below). I connect to Bluetooth on my PC via a USB dongle and after using a different port I haven't had the disconnection issue after a couple hours so a faulty port seems to have been the cause. I have still noticed what feels like a "loose" connection at times where the controls are somewhat unresponsive for maybe a half second, hence the removed star. For anyone experiencing the random disconnects here is the process I was using to reconnect (specific to Window 10). This is partially based on instructions from the official manual and tested on firmware version 3.17.8: - Type "bluetooth" into the search bar to get to interface for "Bluetooth & other devices" - If your controller is already connected from a previous setup attempt, select it and click "Remove device" from the OS bluetooth interface. Once the device is gone from the listing hold down the bluetooth button for 5 seconds (the left one of the two on the top of of contoller). This should clear the internal pairing memory. - Click the "Add Bluetooth or other device" option - Select the "Bluetooth" option - Click the "Steelseries Stratus XL" option, then the "Done" button once that succeeds (Not sure why but sometimes I'd get an OS alert popup saying it already connected, this seemed unreliable) - If the lights flash in pattern where they are on for only half a second and off for 1-2 seconds then the controller successfully connected. Power cycle the controller by turning it off then on - After you have turned the controller back on in the last step you should see the lights blink once or twice, then hopefully you should see only the leftmost light turn on and remain solid. If the lights keep blinking then the connection failed - You may need to restart your game while the controller is on in order for the application to detect the controller input ... show more

  • UPDATE THE FIRMWARE! (Requires USB)
For those who had trouble getting your Stratus XL to connect and/or actually work with your games on Windows 10 - keep reading. Hopefully I can save you from the struggles and frustration I went through (you're welcome SteelSeries). Honestly I ALMOST returned the controller as non-functional before finally figuring it out. I had read all the negative reviews about the Stratus XL connection issues, but silly me, I figured some people probably just weren't reading the directions and I would be tech savvy enough to easily figure it out. I was wrong. the directions are garbage. You want to get your Stratus XL working on Windows 10 and Steam? Here's the #1 thing to know: THE FIRMWARE THAT COMES ON THE CONTROLLER IS BAD Until you update the firmware you will get nowhere. It just plain doesn't work as described. The controller will show that it pairs with your PC, but the lights on the controller will just keep on blinking like it's trying to connect, the "SteelSeries Engine 3" software will fail to locate any connected devices, and the controller won't be recognized inside any of your games. Here's how to update the firmware and actually get this controller to work: 1) Go to the SteelSeries website and hover your mouse cursor over "More", then click on Support > Controllers > Stratus XL > "How do I update the firmware on my Stratus XL for Windows and Android controller?" 2) Open the battery compartment, remove the batteries, and connect the Stratus XL to your PC using the hidden micro-USB port (See photo. You'll have to find your own micro-USB cable). 3) Download, install, and open the latest version of the SteelSeries Engine software 4) Click where it says "Critical Update" and follow the remaining firmware update instructions After I updated the firmware, everything went pretty smoothly for me. Just don't forget that after you update the firmware you need to go to Windows Settings > Devices, click on "SteelSeries Stratus XL" and manually click "Remove." Then, you need to click "Add Bluetooth or other device" to re-pair the device, and finally you need to power-cycle the controller off and on again to refresh the pairing connection. If everything went correctly, when you right-click on the Windows Start Menu and open the Device Manager you should see an entry at the bottom of the list that says "Xbox 360 Peripherals > Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" Now that I have everything setup I'd give the controller itself 5-stars for comfort, weight, and functionality, but SteelSeries gets 1-star for this product (an overall average of 3-stars) for the following reasons: 1) People shouldn't have to update the firmware to get your product to even connect properly 2) If we do need to update the firmware - tell us so we don't have to figure it out on our own 3) Updating the firmware requires a micro-USB cable that's not included 4) Updating the firmware requires installing your SteelSeries Engine bloatware - controllers these days should be plug-and-play 5) Mine didn't come with batteries, probably because some poor sap before me couldn't get the controller connected and returned it but kept the batteries out of spite. Sorry for the long review, but I really do hope this helps people solve their Stratus XL connection issues for Windows 10 and Steam. If you found this information helpful, please click the "Helpful" button below so this gets pushed to the top of the list where others will see it. Thank you. ... show more

  • Awesome product
Just received it yesterday and got it installed and running. Installation in the manual is not great. Here is the installation I used and it works fine for me. Below is the installation procedure I used. The controller feels very durable, button feels smooth, joysticks feels solid. Packaging is also really good with all the foam protection. Overall the controller is working fine and would recommend this controller to PC gamers. I just wish I bought two. 1. Install steel series software. 2. Connect controller through USB to your PC. Some USB cables work and some will not. Try various cables. 3. Once steel series software recognizes the controller you will need to update the firmware. 4. Once updated. Remove USB cable and install your AA batteries. 5. Turn on Controller and hold the wireless button for 2-3 seconds. 6. Go to your PC Bluetooth and add the controller. It should find the steel series xl controller. FYI.... If you're planning on playing it on steam. Go to the steel series software you installed. Add the games to the controller in the software. It will not work unless you do this. Update* 2/18/2020 So far the controller plays great. But... I did find a flaw that caused me to send back the 2 of the controllers. It does not like party games. Anything beyond 2 of these controllers to a PC causes the controller to be not fully functional. At least for controllers 2-4. Controller 1 always works fine. So this leads me to suspect either the firmware or this setup is not possible for the controller. It sucks because I really like the controller. So I decided to go the route of XBox One controllers. I will be running 1 SteelSeries Stratus XL and 3 XBox One (version 2)controllers. ... show more
