  • Designed Well and Durable
I had to wait a while for this controller to become available, everyone seemed to be selling out of them as soon as they got them. I've played on standard XBox 360 controllers, a SCUF 360 controller, and the standard XBox One controller, and I was excited to see how this controller stood up. I was lucky to get to try the Elite controller out at a Comic-Con event last year before they became available, and I really liked it. The Elite controller feels more durable in the hand than a standard XBox One controller - there's a bit of added heft, and playing around with it in your hands, it doesn't feel like there's a lot of void space behind the plastic like a standard controller has. The Elite controller has a matte non-slip finish, with a textured finish on the backside where your fingers curl around. My hands get a little bit sweaty every now and then, and this has made a noticeable difference. The "play" in the buttons, including the A-B-X-Y buttons, the bumpers, the D-pad and the triggers all feel more solid than a standard XBox One controller, and after a month of heavy use they still feel like new. I was a little nervous about the added paddles on the back - how they would hold up, if the trigger action was good, how they would be placed on the controller for my hands. After playing with them a bit to see what's comfortable and most useful, I ended up using two out of the four paddles (one on each side). I was very pleased with the way they snap into place magnetically, it's very easy to remove/install them and they feel solid once they're in place. I haven't had any issues with them popping out or anything. The same is true for the customizable/removable sticks and D-pad. I like that the sticks have a metal shaft, I know the plastic shafts on the standard controllers do wear over time and sometimes break, or even flake off plastic dust after using them for a while. Though the tops of the sticks are plenty grippy, I stuck with the Kontrol Freeks that I'd been using previously, because I like the convex top and the textures they have on them. Though I haven't tested it side-by-side, the battery life in the Elite controller is noticeably better than the standard XBox One controller. The case that the Elite controller came in is pretty nice, it fits everything inside in a tidy fashion and was designed well. It's fabric over a somewhat hard plastic - it would be nice if it were a true hard case, but that doesn't matter much to me since I don't travel with it or anything. I really like the customization options for the trigger action and especially the sticks! I didn't know about this before the controller arrived, but I discovered it when going through the options in the customization app. The preset curves are really slick, and you can customize the presets further. This has made a big difference in playing FPS games like Call of Duty. My only complaint is that some of the customization options in the app are a little unintuitive. The app overall is really slick and is pretty useful, but there are a few things that need improvement. I usually hit the wrong sequence of buttons the first time I try to edit one of my saved presets from the initial menu. Also, the adjustments to the trigger sensitivity seem to make no difference past the first 20% or so. I don't know if that's because I'm using the trigger locks or what, but it would be nice if that were clarified in the app. I was a bit hesitant about the price.... $150 is a lot for a controller, even one that I'd played around with and liked as a demo. When compared to prices for similar non-Microsoft controllers like SCUF, it seems reasonable, especially since they've gone further with on-the-fly hardware and software customization options. But with it being a brand-new product, I wasn't sure how it would hold up over time, and if the retail models would compare favorably to the demo I tried. However, it was designed well and it's durable. After using it heavily for a month, it still feels like good value at retail price, and the best indication of all: I'm still a little excited every time I pull the Elite controller out to play. ... show more

  • Best controller ever made for PC gamers, bar none
The best way to play video games from your couch these days: plug a modern-day PC running Steam's Big Picture Mode, hooked up to a Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller (preferably with a Steam Controller as a backup to play 4x games on your TV, which is way fun), into your TV's HDMI In port and enjoy. Why Steam? Because it enables you to play literally anything, with utter scoffing disregard for the required specs (as well as support for upcoming tech like the Oculus Rift) - everything from Rocket League to Battlefield to Far Cry to Niddhogg to God only knows what else is ready and waiting for you to play it. And the only way to play all that stuff is on an Elite Controller - simply put, the best controller $150 can buy. Wait, $150? Good LORD that's a lot of money; you could probably get a 3DS off Craigslist for that kind of money or something. It's a no-bones-about-it indulgence, true (particularly since it's only natively wireless with the Xbox; using it wirelessly on the PC requires purchasing an additional hardware dongle); it's just that you really do feel the difference as soon as you pick it up for the first time. It's perfectly weighted, the matte finish feels like a dream in the hand, and the buttons have precisely the travel you want from a button. The thumbsticks are gloriously tactile and easily tweakable; I went with stubby on the left stick and tall on the right (give it a shot). The triggers are legitimately flawless; now that they allow for finely-tuned actions (which you can further adjust in the controller's app) you can make them work just the way you want. And, in the spirit of saving the best for last, the d-pads are...well, as a staunch d-pad chauvinist who has STRONG OPINIONS on this cosmically pointless subject, I can safely say that the one on the Elite controller (the regular cross-shaped one, not the bizarre disc-shaped one I swapped out instantly) is one of the very best d-pads on a gaming doohickey to come down the pipe since the GBA micro, aka The Actual Best D-Pad Yes These Initial Caps Are Being Used For Emphasis. if you like retro games, it's worth the price of admission alone, particularly when coupled with those fantastic buttons. and that's not even getting into the paddles, which should make things like reloading or knifing a thousand times easier once you get everything set up. anyway: the tl;dr is that if you're a Windows gamer and feel like playing on the most luxurious controller ever offered to the buying public, take a deep breath and snap one of these up next time you've got some money which deserves to be spent on buying yourself something nice. Every time you pick this controller up, you'll instantly be reminded that you did just that. A++++ would recommend 10/10 and so on. ... show more

  • A super awsome contoller, with one serious flaw A super awsome contoller, with one serious flaw
This is a hard item to rate. As far as function, looks, feel, sensitivity, programming versatility, and paddle layout.....this controller rocks! Too many cool features to list, but I chose it over the Scuf controller because of its ability to switch from short to long throw triggers on the fly. It's a little heavier than the Scuf, but I like the solid feel. But here's the catch. The bumpers are made of cheap, I mean really fragile cheap, plastic. I know this because I've had to take it a part and replace once after 4 months of use. And I don't play everyday. Maybe twice a week! And within 5 months it broke again. These controllers are not made to be taken apart and its a real chore to do so. Google this issue and you'll see a lot of hate on Microsoft for not fixing this long running problem. Once I reassembled the controller, it just never felt the same. Probably just in my head, but with the second break, and always the left bumper, I wasn't going to go through replacing the bumper again. But I love this controller so much I bought another immediately and almost one year to the date that I bought my first one. But I spent the 15.00 dollars on the 3 year extended warranty this time. You should do the same because I'm sure I'll need it. On a side note, if you have an Elite and the bumper breaks, you can always map a paddle to the broken bumper and keep on using it. I really want to give this thing 5 stars, but 150.00 and you can't get a full year out of it, well, you have to take that into consideration. (Oh by the way, I'm a skinny old weakling who's hands are so weak, I can't open a jar of mayonnaise without some help. I play very lightly when I game and never abused my controllers.) UPDATE: My third MS Elite controller has broken. Left bumper went after 4 months!!! I will not buy another. And now Square Deal is giving me the run-a-round on the warranty. Flat out avoid this controller!!!! I'm a 59 year old gamer, (yea odd, I know), and I got no reason to bash this product if it would at least last a year! I can afford to buy a new one every 4 months, but I'm not throwing my money to Microsoft any more. Amazon should stop selling this inferior product! ... show more

  • Expensive, worthy, but still with room for improvement
(First, this controller retails for around $150. If it's still early on, there IS currently a bit of a supply problem. That means DON'T BUY the $300 listings. Wait if you can for Microsoft to restock.) I would fit in the "luxury" market for the Elite Wireless Controller, in that I'm no professional competitive gamer. I'm not even that great a gamer. But if you can afford this controller, I would highly recommend it. The workmanship is top notch, the parts are durable, and the controller is highly configurable. Everyone has already spewed praise for this controller, so let me highlight my gripes, despite the mostly-earned 5 star review. - You can't remap paddles to stick directions. This would be useful to me in pinball to control nudges. You also can't map to the View or Menu buttons. I do have an instance where that would be nice. - You can't define custom stick curves, just the default, slow, fast, and instant curves. I feel like more precision tuneability was promised than that. - The "Xbox Accessories" app does not work in snap mode for fast on-the-fly adjustments. - You only have two slots on-board the controller, despite the many more you can save on your console. You will wish there were more on-board once you start playing more than one game or using multiple configs in a single game. - The app feels like it was written by interns. It's functional, but unrefined and a little clunky. I hope it will be rewritten. - The sliver triggers are plastic with silver finish. If you were expecting metal, you might be disappointed. - The main surface of the controller has a "grippy, matte rubber" finish, the same finish I had on controllers from five years ago, and that material degraded to a tacky, used-duct-tape-like residue. I hope the same fate does not await this controller. - Despite a claim that a third-party will produce new/replacement parts, I have yet to see them in the wild. Despite all this, the controller still comes highly recommended for the many reasons already espoused. Many of the issues above can be fixed with updates and firmware. Others are potential issues that may or may not pan out. Overall, I would give this a 4.7 star review. It is worthy, but there is room for improvement. ... show more

  • After 1 year review. First person shooter gamer opinion.
The first question you're probably asking, Is this controller worth it? depends on what you're gonna use it for, Racing? fighting? Shooting? or something else? This review is based on the FPS shooters perspective and serves as an opinion to help those who are on the fence of buying. I'm also going to assume you already know what's in the package along with the controller. For the TLTR version scroll down to the bottom. Right off the bat, controller feels 10x better than the standard Xbox one controller. Rubber grip feels great in hands and drastically reduces slippage if you have sweaty hands like me (yes I know, gross). From the ergonomics alone, it certainly feels like the hefty $150.00 price tag was well worth the quality. Then comes all the little gadgets you can add onto your controller to "optimize" your gaming performance. My opinion? a waste of materials I paid for that hardly ever sees usage. I've tried all the different attachments, from the 4 paddle to the 3 different sized extended analog sticks, none of them made me feel like I had in edge when playing Battlefield, Battlefront or other FPS shooters. In the end I just ditched the paddles since they got in the way of my grip and went with the standard sized analog sticks. They ONLY thing I switched was the D-Pad from the circular to the + D-Pad since I felt it gave a more positive click. Hair Triggers; are they any good? Most certainly. I must say if there was one thing I could keep from this controller it’s the hair trigger feature. I already have fast trigger fingers as it is so giving me a hair trigger would simply squeeze out that last 8% of performance; that's just to putting it into perspective how effective these hair triggers are. These hair triggers aren't there to make you a pro gamer, but to aid you in quicker follow up shots, much like aim assist aids in your target acquisition. Of course if you're constantly playing games with full auto weapons then this feature is pointless. Hair triggers mostly apply to semi auto firing modes, much like many of the weapon in the current Battlefield 1 game. Another important factor of this $150.00 controller... Does it hold up? Not as well as I expected but still usable without any major problems. After 1 year of usage, all buttons, triggers, bumpers and analog sticks held up good and feel just as crisp as when I used them day 1. However the controller has started to fail in certain places such as the rubber grips which appear they have lost some adhesion on the underside, as a result have begun to peel off. A quick spot of superglue should fix this problem but why should I have to on my $150 controller? Another thing, the seams of the controller are now more pronounced compared to how I first received it. Not a big deal but I felt it was worth mentioning. THE VERDICT So again, is it worth it for the $150.00 price tag? (now lower) as an FPS shooter and a person who is an avid gamer that probably puts more than 500 hours in games every year…..YES! but would I buy it again? Probably not, unless they lower it down around $80 to $100.00. I bought this controller with the same mentality you have when you’re buying a couch or chair. How long are you going to be sitting on it and see usage? Might as well make an investment if it’s something you constantly use. You know what they say buy once cry once. In the end you will be more comfortable with this controller that includes many features than you are with a standard controller. Is it needed? No, and I am a testament to that answer. I can perform just as well with a standard Xbox One controller, so anyone going out buying this thinking they’re now gonna own newbs on Call of Booty are delusional and in for a big surprise. 100% of the attachments are preference and do not make any gamer “better”. The Controller is simply a tool, it’s the gamer that is behind it that matters. ‘TLTR’: Based on the first person shooter experience. Best feeling controller out on the market. Good for sweaty hands, held up decently after 1 year of heavy usage. Rubber grips are starting to peel off. Attachments like the paddles get in the way of grip, and the extended analog sticks don’t make much sense for FPS. Classic + D Pad is much more positive than circular version. Hair triggers are a plus if you use semi auto weapons in FPS. Is it worth $150.00? Make the decision as if you’re buying a chair for gaming. Are you going to be using it a lot (500hrs to 1000hrs a year)? If your answer is yes then it’s definitely worth it. If you’re buying the controller to improve your gaming performance you’re going to be disappointed. So will you buy the stool or the gamer chair? Both do the same thing, allow you to sit. What matters is how comfortable you want to be, and that’s exactly what this controller is about. If it matters to anyone, because of all the reasons I mentioned, my rating is a 3.5 but lean more towards a 4 star. Far from perfect but definitely an improvement on the original Xbox One controller. ... show more

  • Caution Before Spending This Much!
I'm writing today dear reader as an adult gamer and as someone who appreciates nice things. I'm also someone who believes that typically you get what you pay for and it's worth spending more money to get something that will last. To that last point I have a little cautionary tale that I hope will help you make your decision. First impressions on this beast of a controller were "Wow". Beautifully made, solid and the paddles are a key feature that, when programmed and gotten used to, can be a huge advantage in some games where normally you'd have to take your thumb off the right stick in order to hit a button (Hello Dark Souls 3). I bought this in March 2016 and I'm writing to you today in June, 2016. I used it a lot, never dropped it and lovingly kept it in it's very nice and protective case. Issue: After some consistent and heavy use with Dark Souls 3 and Rocket League the Right Shoulder Button came loose. You could still activate it but not from the corner where you finger naturally lies (I have large hands) but rather, I had to reach around the crest (hump) of the RB button and push straight in. There are various repair videos on YouTube describing this issue and I believe a small part has broken off. I certainly have not been able to reattach it so it functions properly. So, I paid $161 with tax/shipping I should be able to get this thing fixed right? After all I'm a loyal Xbox, Xbox 360 (multiple boxes) and Xbox One Elite owner. I called Microsoft since their website proved unhelpful for controller repairs other than to replace the detachable parts on this controller. After a LOT of compliments on my being such a valued customer they said, "Sorry, it's out of warranty and we can't replace it". I asked about fixing it and that I'd pay for that. "You'd have to take it to a MS store". I said I didn't know those existed (and I'm in Los Angeles). Where can I find one. He informed me that there was on about an hour from my on the Westside (that's a hour of traffic mind you, still it's a long drive and not convenient at all, and I'm paying more money on top of what I've already spent). ADVICE: I have yet to confirm that they can actually repair it but I think it's quite outrageous to make an "Elite" product that costs this much and NOT offer better service on it. Am I surprised? Not terribly but I'm regretting paying so much for a device that, at the end of the day, is going to take a LOT of abuse, even by an adult user who has been quite careful with his shiny new controller. You might consider that the paddles are a very nice way to avoid button mashing and, in my experience, don't get pressed as hard simply because the the way I'm holding my hand around the controller. You're brain "re-maps" pretty quickly to the paddles once you play for about 15 mins. Still, some might consider that a workaround and feel that a product of this caliber/cost should simply "Work" as expected, if not better. I offer all of this as a caution and simply advise that you ask yourself how rough you are on controllers (I guess with Dark Souls 3, I'm pretty rough on the RB button) and weigh out the advantages of this controller before purchasing it. Other reviews will cover the advantages by the way and they are not insignificant. The programmability, the magnetic buttons that elegantly just lift off and allow you to put different ones on. Very cool. Maybe I'll update this and share my repair experience in Century CIty (if they can indeed repair it). UPDATE: Okay, very happy about the Microsoft store. I drove down on a Saturday since it's a bit of a schlep getting down there and I walked in, they looked up my appointment and replaced it. No questions asked. So I guess if you're willing to work to get it replaced you can find a way. ... show more

  • BEST CONTROLLER EVER MADE
modeled after the best controller design from the xbox 360 this is the best Pro consumer in mind controller ever made. at the time there was plenty of 3rd party accessories that let you customize or replace warn parts after trying out the new Xbox Elite Series 2 i went back and purchased 2x more used original Elite Wireless Controllers with a bunch of accessories to last me my entire life as i feel we'll never see a controller this good again in my life time the Elite Series 2 sucks for 2 basic reasons 1. built in battery....WHY? it makes it so hard to change the battery in the future while the original has AA battery slot meaning i can use rechargeable energizer lithium AA or run down to the store and get some alkaline very convenient, i also don't have to take apart the controller just to change the battery 2. Elite Series 2 is modeled after the new series controller which grip angle is different feels cramped, MS said they changed the design to make it more comfortable for handicapped people...REALLY! that's like less than 1% of players; they could have made a special controller for the handicapped why force everyone to be uncomfortable. 2026 and the Xbox brand is dead, people are looking back to the 360 which was Xbox's peak ... show more

  • Premium product for a premium price
I was a little finicky about buying this controller, considering the few bad reviews I'd see here and there, but I'm glad I gave into temptation and bought it. This controller has a premium price, but the controller itself feels so premium to me that I feel like I've paid for a controller that has more than twice the lifespan of the standard ones. I don't usually write reviews, but here's a list of pros and cons. Pros: -First of all, this controller feels a bit heavier (this is a pro to me, but may be a con to others) -Trigger stoppers are amazing, just be sure to adjust your deadzones for fps games like Halo 5 or Battlefield 1. (Just search YouTube if you don't know how) -The rings around the analog sticks that they make contact with are actually made of metal as well, this particular area used to be a problem for me. The ring would start chipping paint and the paint would become dust, causing the analog sticks to feel gritty. The elite controller does a good job of fixing this issue. -Multiple analog stick variants, made of metal as well -The paddles. Now this part takes some getting used to, but once you do, you have a major advantage in gaming; the advantage of stationary thumbs. I've had this controller for just a little while now but I'm already using all 4, my friend suggested I start with 2 but that wasn't doing it for me. It really depends on what feels right to you. -Multiple profiles, as well as a switch to swap between your 2 favorites. This is what really makes the controller amazing, you can save multiple profiles and you can change the favorites at any time, as well as swapping between the two by sliding the switch. -Tapping the sync button twice to toggle the paddles. This allows my to rest the controller on my leg without having the paddles being pressed, just like I did with the standard controller. -There's the finish on the controller, which solved the issue of sweaty palms (for people like me who got those from the standard controller). There's also grips as well. -The changeable d-pad. There's two d-pad that come with this controller, both of which are made of metal and are easily swappable. -3.5mm jack. I know this was added into the newer controller designs, but it's nice knowing that it's there considering the price you pay for it. -comes with 9 foot cord, allowing you to game without wasting money on batteries (if you're like me and that length is long enough) -it comes with a carrying case for safe transportation of the controller and accessories Cons: -If you drop it, you feel like you just lost half of your remaining lifespan. -The nonstandard d-pad feels a little loose when you put it into the rubber bit on in the case for accessories. -It's a challenge to list cons on something you love so much. Anyway, that wraps up my review. I'll update it if anything comes up, such as issues or something like that. ... show more
