  • Default Configuration Doesn't Make Sense To Me
Size: 7 port Style: power adapter included
Sturdy product - I have purchased from StarTech before and these USB hubs are probably the most rugged on the market. Tech support is "decent." I had a couple of conversations trying to debug this product after having power issues the first couple of months when it appeared to not deliver what it promised. The issue was... by default this unit will only use the power from the data line, if plugged into your computer. WHY WOULD THAT BE THE DEFAULT, when this has its own standalone power source? The first time I told StarTech support I was having power issues, we were not able to resolve the issue. The second time I contact them, the tech sent me a diagram showing how to remove the housing and place a jumper on other pins so that the unit will only use power from its own supply. So once you move the jumper, you somewhat get the promised power... HOWEVER, it continues. Even while relying on its own power, if you have a data line connected, that data line will draw 500mA. So even with the hub using its own power, you can never get 2.4A on any port, even if you're only using a single port. So what does this mean? 1. If you want to charge as fast as you can, you have to unplug this from your computer, even if you have moved the jumper to only rely on the hub's dedicated power supply. 2. If you want to have power and data, you will get -500mA on each port and have reduced charging. 3. Until you move the jumper internally for the unit, you will only ever get power coming from your computer if a data line is connected to your computer, even if you have the hub plugged into the wall (dumb). Given these constraints, I would say this is DEFINITELY not worth the money. None of these situations are ideal. It works, but for this very high price, I was expecting way better. ... show more

  • Whoa Nelly!
Size: 10 port Style: power adapter included
This thing is a TANK!!! We have power hungry stuff plugged into it and it DOES NOT CARE. No voltage fluctuations on the other ports. All ports @ 5.1Vdc - even fully populated. it JustWorks(tm). ROCK SOLID STABLE UNDER LIVE STUDIO USE CONDITIONS where failure and flakiness ARE NOT OPTIONS. I wish more folks made their gear like this! ... show more

  • Large and Heavy But it Works
Size: 7 Port Style: USB 3.0
When setting up my media system after a remodel and trying to get rid of all the little USB transformers that the analog to digital / digital to analog adapters needed for some legacy equipment, I bought the 4-port version of this thinking it would be plenty large enough. However, it was quickly overgrown and even with this one's 8 ports, I am using 7 of them! This device is USB 3.0 but, as I'm using it only for power and am doing so from a 12v DC source, it provides plenty to the USB 2.0 devices. ... show more

  • Awesome Hub - bad cable
Size: 4 Port Style: USB 3.0
I really like this USB 3.0 hub. Most USB 3.0 hubs seem like cheap pieces of junk, but this one having a metal case has a good, solid, quality, look and feel. Other than the USB 3.0 cable being bad out of the box, I would highly recommend this product. Below is my review on the StarTech USB 3.0 HDD dock Model: SATDOCKU3SEF which includes mention of THIS hub. Both had bad cables and its easier to paste my other review below than to type it again. Below basically say's, if you think your USB 3.0 item is dead, try another cable that you know is good! ____________________________________________ I have recently purchase 5 of these for work(StarTech USB 3.0 HDD dock Model: SATDOCKU3SEF). I have to use docks for forensic applications sometimes and the hdd's are constantly reading/writing for days on end. With regular docks, the hdd's get hot enough to fry an egg but the cooling fan on this dock is awesome and the drives only get warm. I thought one of these was bad but after a little trouble shooting, I found that the USB 3.0 cable was bad. I have about 10 different items that have USB 3.0 and three of those items came with bad cables. The other two were the StarTech USB 3.0 Industrial 4 port hub (ST4300USBM) and a Vantec Nexstar hdd dock. I RMA'd the first Vantec dock that was doing the same thing and most likely, it was the cable too. With the Vantec hdd dock, I thought something was wrong with one of my laptops USB3 ports which it was the only computer I had used it with. It always said this item will work faster if you plug it into a USB3 port and I had constant disconnects(Same problem with my first one). After I realized that I had bad cables with the Startech Dock and Hub, I tried a new cable on the Vantec hdd dock and that's when I found out that cable was bad too. I have read a lot of reviews where USB3 items were dead on arrival and I would bet that some if not most of these items had bad cables. I'd like to know if it's the same manufacturer that's supplying these cables to the different companies. I needed all of these items to work asap so I just went out and bought new cables which were about $5 each made by Bergtek and they worked fine. So, if you buy a USB 3.0 dock, hub, etc from ANY manufacturer and it doesn't work or work right, try another cable if you have one! ... show more

  • Best option I found for my telescope
Size: 10 port Style: power adapter included
If you have a telescope with multiple pieces of gear that needs a USB connection, this is the most reliable hub I've found and continue to use. It is expensive, but rock-solid reliable. Several others I've tried failed to stay connected or connected equipment out of order, which is a disaster when specific port addresses are required for devices. This hub is connected to an indoor workstation 50 meters away, and performance has been very reliable. There is a smaller 5 port Star-Tech hub that I also recommend, but if you need more than 5 ports, then this is the way to go. ... show more
