  • Poorly written.
It's worth seeing if you are a Star Trek completist. Be aware that this is attempting to be in the style of modern Syfy channel or cable channel shows and the writing is all over the place. The ending is absurd, its basically impossible to believe that this takes place in the same universe as TNG, and Picard does not act like Picard. It's one thing for a man to be defeated and regret his past. It's another for Jean-Luc Picard to suffer a setback, quit, mourn Data for 20 years and completely give up. Its frankly, unbelievable. And Data's ending is bizarre and out of character as well. Also, if you enjoy seeing Picard get knocked around and be wrong for half the series, you'll love this. Also, you will be excited and full of nostalgia when watching it but as soon as each episode is over, the more you think about it, the less it makes sense. That is all beside the fact that plotlines are dropped, make no sense, and that if this didn't have Star Trek in the title, it would probably be cancelled after one season. One positive thing this show does over recent Trek like Discovery is that the pace is not so frenetic that you can't tell what is happening. They let it breathe and have chilled out on the wild camera movements. It's worth seeing. It's not worth 45 dollars. ... show more

  • Vomit, Violence, Swearing, and Humiliation
In a nutshell, this is what you get. You want vomit? You don't get one example of vomit, you get another, and then another, and then more and more and more and drugs and drink. You want violence? You get murder and evil and bitterness from characters that never did this before, whose backstory is essentially erased in pursuit of an agenda. You want swearing? You get that too - against the titular character, so you can feel disrespect and a form of elder abuse in a pseudo-Star Fleet which willingly abides genocide and racism and evil as a badge of virtue. Finally, you get humiliation, because this is a porn S*M novella based mini-series whose sole purpose is to desecrate a character many used to know and love. Not anymore! If that's what you want, this is the show for you, but there is no way this would have been done without a streaming service where ratings are irrelevant and writing can be anything somebody with agenda wants it to be. ... show more

  • Just Bizarre Writing (w/ update)
I'm not gonna be that Star Trek fan who complains about how elements of this new show don't match up with established continuity, or how this prejudice world goes against Gene Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future... Those are things I don't like, but everyone has talked those points to death and I can get why the new creative team would wanna try something new with this almost 60-year-old franchise. However, it's just not entertaining (for me at least), character's motivations don't seem to make much sense from scene to scene, New plot-lines are introduced just to be forgotten or dropped minutes later... and the ending? Yikes! Reminds me of a poorly written fan film but with a high budget. The writing is what kills this show for me more than any fanboy nitpicks about canon. Old Star Trek unique and different from the contemporaneity science fiction of the time, new Star Trek feels like it's trying to emulate what was popular on TV from the year before and does it badly. EDIT: Amazon has removed almost a the negative reviews for this show from public view. Bumping up the rating to over 4 Stars. Even as I write this I don't know if anyone will be able to see this update. Amazon has a hand in Star Trek Picard and removing negative reviews of it is mad sketchy. I'm hoping this this update will bring my review out of the purgatory it was sent ... show more

  • Welcome Back Jean-Luc
I am really liking this new chapter of Picards life. I am glad this is not a TNG sequel, rather its own take on the Star Trek Universe. They did jettison some of the optimism for realism. This is a different type of storytelling than Star Trek fans are used to. It is more or less and ten part movie. I loved that they stayed faithful to the Picard character and the ST universe. But at the same time it illustrates that time changes things. And it's not always for the better. It was good to see Legacy Characters, but not in a "reunion show" sort of way. They where neatly fit into the story. I pretty much agree with every decision the writers made regarding characters...etc. Everything made sense and was for a purpose. The writing was incredible and poetic from start to finish. As was the cinematography, FX, and direction (especially the Frakes episodes, but really all). Of the new characters/actors, two stood out for me the most. But ALL did great. Isa Briones as Soji/Dahj/Sutra/.... She seems like a very versatile actor that will go far and definitely delivered here. The other is Evan Evagora as Elnor. He was very good at emotional expression, facial and physical. His action sequences where excellent. And even the scenes where his job was just to stand there, he managed to contribute to the scene. His facial reactions to things happening or what people said in particular. Not to mention the actor himself is a big Trekkie. So the part means a lot to him. For some actors it's just a job. Overall I give Season One 5-stars. I can't wait for Season Two. Hopefully it won't take too too long. But be patient given the circumstances. ... show more

  • Disappointing to see so much potential and opportunity to make a great story thrown away
This is not star trek there has never been drunks junkies and smoking also the amount of violence is disappointing the premise is artificial life will destroy everything so it must be stoped all all cost but that would go against the very notion of seak out new life so zero chance of Picard actually getting behind that even to the ridiculous exentent of well maybe if we ask them nicely to not wipe out all life in the universe we can all get along really I own every episode ever made of every series AND THIS IS UNWATCHABLE ... show more
