Description

Bitcoin mining is the least understood yet most publicly maligned part of the Bitcoin protocol. To the uninformed, giant warehouses of mining machines consuming unheard of amounts of power seem dystopian. Miners running in rural containers or personal homes sounds even more bizarre. Even to the Bitcoin- educated who have an interest in mining, the available options and practical how-to’s can be just as confusing. But when you take a deeper look, Bitcoin mining is revealed to be a fundamentally optimistic story filled with simple incentives and creative entrepreneurs. And finally, there’s a book that explains it all. The Bitcoin Miner’s Almanac has the clear explanations, defining principles, strategic insights, and case studies you need to understand and appreciate the emerging Bitcoin mining industry, and maybe even become a part of it yourself. “This expansive Almanac explores the exciting world of Bitcoin mining, going beyond the technical jargon to explain its significance. The Bitcoin Miner's Almanac examines the evolution of Bitcoin mining from its humble beginnings, exploring its potential to revolutionize energy consumption and empower individuals seeking financial freedom. Warren’s book is written for both noobs like me and seasoned Bitcoin enthusiasts like you.” — Rob Roudi, cofounder, Bitcoin Park “A ‘must read’ for anyone interested in, or actively operating, a Bitcoin mining operation. Rob demystifies mining for newbies, and elucidates nuances for veterans. Something for everyone.” — Dan Morrison, founder, Amalgamated Sludge Read more

  • Bitcoin miners as pioneers of technological freedom
"The Bitcoin Miner's Almanac" by Robert Warren offers a deep dive into one of humanity's most groundbreaking technological inventions. This book illuminates how Bitcoin was engineered to tackle major economic and governance challenges facing our world today. Warren presents Bitcoin as the most robust, decentralized, and flexible financial system ever devised, operating without intermediaries or counterparty risks. Through this lens, the author demonstrates how humanity has unlocked a new echelon of freedom. A standout feature of this book is its introduction to a diverse cast of Bitcoin miners. Warren showcases these miners' stories and innovative ideas, giving readers a glimpse into the impressive business strategies and innovations they employ. These examples not only provide insight into the Bitcoin mining industry but also highlight the creative potential this technology unleashes. The book emphasizes the role of Bitcoin miners as trailblazers showcasing the path of technological liberty. These miners exemplify how this technology can transform individuals and communities from the ground up. A key takeaway is the author's optimistic outlook on human progress. Warren posits that as people pursue knowledge and embrace new technologies like Bitcoin, society will gradually evolve. Simultaneously, those exploiting others and restricting freedoms within the old system will become obsolete. The book underscores that Bitcoin provides humanity with a novel way to store their time and energy. This new option empowers individuals and sets the stage for further innovations. Overall, "The Bitcoin Miner's Almanac" presents a compelling vision of how Bitcoin, as a technological breakthrough, can reshape our economic landscape and potentially lead to a more free and prosperous future for humanity. By featuring diverse miner stories and their creative approaches, the book also offers a tangible and engaging perspective on how Bitcoin technology is driving innovation and change in the business world. ... show more

  • Short, But Worthwhile
This is a shorter book than I expected, with much less detail than I'd hoped for from a book billing itself as an "almanac". Those who want immediately-actionable knowledge that will help them analyze the profitability of a miner project, design the layout of their facility, or select hardware and mining pools will have to look elsewhere. If there are any tables or charts in the book, I've forgotten them already a couple of days after finishing it. That said, this is probably the only real book about Bitcoin mining, and certainly the most current. I would still recommend it to anyone interested in mining, and I managed to learn something despite already being involved in "pleb" mining at a very small scale. The first half gives a broad overview of what Bitcoin mining looks like at different scales, from the home miner keeping their family warm in the winter while earning a few sats to massive public companies using hundreds of megawatts of electricity. I found this part the most valuable, since I knew very little about mining at large scale—especially the more exotic water-cooled and immersion approaches. The second half has interviews with several people in the mining "industry", with each of the scales discussed in the book represented. This was less useful to me, since you can find this kind of material on the many Bitcoin-related podcasts, but it's still nice to have a written record and the stories were interesting. ... show more

  • Peak signal, high efficiency
The author presents a fresh and sharp tone that carries peak signal at a high efficiency. Parts one and two read differently (as the ladder is Q&As), particularly enjoyed part one.

  • Learned so much!
I learned so much about the different ways people mine Bitcoin and how it interacts with electric grids. Appreciated the nuanced analogies and the detailed framing of examples. I was a little worried this would go over my head but did not find it to be too technical once I started.

  • from the virtues to the practical mechanics of mining
What a great book and necessary addition to the growing field of bitcoin! Not too technical - it explains that a mining machine has three inputs, and four basic parts, in words that anyone can understand. The best part is the layout of the book. FIrst half is the basics of, and different (small, medium and large) types of bitcoin operations, from a single machine in the basement to a gigantic facility hundreds of acres. Importantly, it demonstrates that there are so many motivations and factors going into consideration for mining, that all sizes and speeds of operation can be profitable. The second half is just as excellent. It is a series of interviews with mining operators, from families to small companies to publicly held firms. Some have bitcoin mining as only one part of their company, one operates exclusively in Africa, and shows the risks of larger operations as well as smaller ones. I've been seriously orange pilled and have read more than ten books on the subject, and this one added an entirely new dimension to my knowledge. ... show more
