This is a patio heater. It is the perfect size to sit beneath the table and radiate heat, keeping people warm as they sit outside on cool nights. It is perfect for the job it was designed to do. Perfect. Enter my husband, who upon seeing this, decided neither the two space heaters he has in the basement was doing the job right, and he had to have it. Since it’s full on winter and our patio table is stored away, I didn’t object, especially since this product needed to be tested. But I did remind him this unit is intended to be used as stated on the box. He mumbled something about being able to read and carried his new heater down the stairs, scurrying like Golem with his Precious. About half an hour later, he came upstairs and said, “This is only radiant heat,” and I reminded him of its intended function. Again. A few minutes after that, he emerged again from the basement. “You know what the heater needs? A little reflective strip to direct the heat outward!” “What would the person sitting on that side do?” “What do you mean?” came my husband’s puzzled reply. “The person sitting behind the reflective panel isn’t going to get any heat. The people on the sides aren’t going to be getting all that much either. So one person would roast, and the rest will freeze.” “What are you talking about?” asked my genuinely perplexed husband. “I’m telling you how to improve on the design!” “It doesn’t need improvement. It works exactly as it is designed to. It is supposed to…” “What? It’s supposed to just send it’s heat out in all directions? That doesn’t help me.” “Well,” I maybe not quite so calmly replied, “yeah. Since it’s a *patio* heater and designed to sit beneath a table and keep everyone warm.” “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” my hubby asked, frustrated, as he went to retrieve said patio heater to be stored in the garage until the furniture comes out in the spring.     • Easy to use but what is with the flocking?

Really easy to use. You simply plug it in after you remove it from the box and clean off all the foam pieces. You need to stay relatively close to the heater as the heat doesn't radiate too far outwards. It does work well and it does get hot but without a forced air blower you aren't going to feel instant warmth. But the longer you have it on the more the air will warm around it. It is like a radiator heater; it will warm and the heat will spread or radiates out from the heater. It is an inferred heater which one of the benefits of it is that it will almost instantly be up to temp unlike an oil radiator heater that will need time to heat up. It is a lower cost to run than most other types of heaters. And you are not going to have harmful emissions like a forced air heater. There are a lot of pros to this little heater. Now all of us when we picked up this heater immediately recoiled at the flocking on the metal bars, I am not sure why it is there. Just know it feels really weird. So that is the 4 stars, it feels weird and sometimes you just want hot air blowing on you when you are cold. Otherwise super heater. ... show more

I've tried this outside on my front porch where I like to sit. The heat output can't really be felt by more than a foot away, and it's not enough to keep you warm even on a day in the high 50's, low 60's. I have, however, found that it works nicely in my living room. The room is 12 by 24 and it certainly doesn't heat the whole room but if I sit it near where I am, it provides a very pleasant warmth. Pumps out the heat! Its easy to use--just plug in and turn on. There is not a way to adjust heat temperature however so you would need to turn it off as needed. Part of the great saftey in this heater is a BUILT in tip mechanisim (not a switch at the bottom that could go bad). It also has a soft material vovering the metal so it will not be hot to the touch. It is large enough to heat up a small room or area. It also works outside in the cold but you do need to be sitting nearby to enjoy its heat of course. It does have a metal handle at the top. The handle will not get hot to the touch and is safe to use. The look of this heater is also a nice touch as it looks like a very large lantern! Finally a space heater that is aesthetic and quiet. I love this thing! I use it indoors and outdoors. Initially I thought I would only be using it in my basement, garage, and on the patio. But it turns out that I love using it on the first floor of my house to keep me cozy without having to overwork my poor old dying furnace. I live up north and this heater is plenty strong to heat up one (roughly) 1,200 square foot floor in December. Then as a bonus, the warm air from the first floor rises to the second floor. My whole house is just a lot cozier with this thing. It’s fantastic. I also want to note that it is simple to turn on, just one on/off switch on the base. It is easy to carry with the sturdy handle that locks in place with two extra screws provided. And it is safe to the touch with the flocked grate around the heat source. I don’t have to worry about my pets walking passed it. It is also very stable on the ground. I’m so happy with this lantern heater and am so glad that I didn’t settle for the traditional kind.
