Description

Which flange size should I use? Flange fit drives comfort and how much milk you express. The box includes 24mm and 28mm flanges, with 16mm to 32mm sold separately. To size correctly, measure your nipple's diameter and add 2-3mm. A wrong-size flange can reduce comfort or output. The suction feels weaker — is the pump failing, and how often do parts need replacing? The motor is rarely the problem. A loose or worn duckbill valve or backflow membrane is the usual cause. Reseat and dry it first; that often restores suction. If not, replace duckbills every 3-6 months and the backflow protector when suction fades. The rhythm feels different and my output seems low — is something wrong? Natural Nursing Technology mimics a baby's suckling, so the rhythm can feel different — that's normal. Start in massage mode for letdown, then expression. If output seems low, check your flange size; a mid-range suction often works best. How is the S1 Plus different from the S2 Plus? They're the same pump in every way but one. Both deliver identical suction, modes, and settings; the S1 Plus adds a rechargeable battery for portable use, while the S2 Plus runs on a cord.If mobility matters to you, the S1 Plus is the one to choose. Is it quiet, and can I pump hands-free? The S1 Plus runs on a quiet motor, so you can pump in a shared space or beside a sleeping little one with minimal disturbance. For hands-free sessions, Spectra CaraCups are compatible with the pump so you don't have to hold the flanges. Visit the Store

  • LOVE!!! So glad I took the chance and bought this!
This is one of the two best purchases I have made as a new first-time mom (the other is the Snuza Portable Baby Movement Monitor)! Here is some background about me: I am an exclusive pumper. I hemorrhaged very badly after the birth of my son, and my milk supply was extremely late coming in and extremely low due to the large blood loss. My son is a large baby (he weighed 10 pounds 1 ounce at birth and 15.5 pounds at 8 weeks), and he started to have difficulty due to so little milk. He became dehydrated and began losing weight very quickly. At 4 days old, I began supplementing with formula using a SNS at first and then a bottle. He wouldn't stay latched long enough (even with the SNS) to empty my breasts and tell my body to make more milk. Working with a lactation consultant, I decided to make the switch to exclusive pumping when my son was 3 weeks old. I began renting a Medela Symphony for the first 3.5 weeks. It did help my milk supply increase some (I went from 4-5mL every 2 hours to .5 ounces), but I found it painful to use even on the lowest suction. It also was very heavy and not portable - it was difficult even to move it from room to room. It was also pretty loud, although my son found the white noise it created to be soothing and it did not seem to bother him. I knew I had to purchase a pump since I would be going back to work eventually. After many hours of research and comparing different pumps, I took the leap of faith and bought this pump. (I was leery because there were so few reviews and very little information available about this pump and brand in the U.S.) Once I decided to purchase a Spectra pump, I was undecided about whether to get the S1 or the S2. I didn't know if I could justify spending over $100 more for the battery option. I am glad I spent the extra money on the S1 since this is something I use at least 6 times every day. The battery option is definitely convenient, and I use it often. However, I wouldn't consider it a necessity for me, but that's just my opinion based on my individual situation! I could not be happier with my decision! Not only does this pump empty my breasts better than the Medela Symphony, it is also MUCH less painful, even on the highest suction setting. My son is now 13 weeks old, and I've been using this pump for 2 months. My milk supply is still not enough to stop supplementing, but it has increased from .5 ounces every 2-3 hours to 2.5-3 ounces. (I am also taking Fenugreek, but I have been taking it since my son was one week old. In addition, I realize this increase is likely in part due to my blood supply increasing.) This pump is quiet enough that I can pump in the middle of the night while in bed with my husband beside me and my son in the co-sleeper next to me and it never wakes or even disturbs either of them. It is also VERY portable and lightweight, especially for being a hospital grade pump. I started back to work this week, and I can pump several times a day in my office and no one is bothered or even knows I am pumping. I did not think the nightlight was important or a feature I would care about, but I use it every night and have found it to be very convenient for pumping in the dark without disturbing anyone. If you are wondering (like I did) if this pump is too good to be true, wonder no longer! This pump meets and exceeds all of my needs and expectations as an exclusive pumper! I would highly recommend it to anyone. Note: I also purchased two of the Spectra Baby USA Silicone Massagers and I would not recommend these. Not only did they do nothing for my milk supply, but they were extremely uncomfortable and even painful at times. I used them twice and that was it. They are unnecessary as this pump functions great without them! ... show more

  • Amazing pump, worth every penny!
Update: I bought a second one after having my third child. My first two days back at work I pumped 12 oz and 15 oz. The baby only needs 9-10 oz while I'm gone. This pump is the best. I know my review is super long but the short version is you will not find a better pump. It is effective, gentle, and what more could you want? The price has even gone down since I bought the first one. I bought a second because all pumps eventually lose suction. I think I paid about $130 for my second one. I'll use it for a year, so that's a little over $10 a month. Well worth it. ------ This pump is amazing. When it comes to something that you're probably going to be using several times a day, almost every day, for about a year or so, you want to like it. The best you can hope for is a love-hate relationship with the pump, because you'd probably rather just be nursing the baby, but at least you can still pump and that's the next best thing. So, you want one that won't make you hate the entire process even more, right? I pumped with my first, who is now 2.5 years old, from day 2 until he was 1 year old. I just had my second baby (1 month now) and have used this pump 4 times so far, 3 times as single, once as a double. As with my first, I plan to return to work at 12 weeks and will be pumping until she is 1 year old as well. I love this pump. With my first baby I used a Medela single electric, then got a Hygeia double electric. Honestly, I hated them both. The suction had to be super high, and the flanges that came with them were not big enough for me, so I had to spend more money on new flanges. The flanges that came with the Spectra are larger than the default Medela ones, and are comfortable for me. I was using the XL Medela ones before. These are slightly smaller than those. The Hygeia would constantly lose suction and I had to replace tubes and valves every week or so, and keep increasing the suction. By the end of the year, my nipples had basically lost all feeling, except when I was pumping and they hurt. I also had to pump longer and longer, so I was spending 3 sessions of 1 hour each pumping at work, to get the same amount. So, 1 hour to get about 3-4 oz. With the Spectra, under the same conditions, I can pump 6 oz in 10 minutes, with very low suction. The mechanics of this pump are just so much more effective. The letdown cycle actually works for me. With the Hygeia I would try to change the settings to get a letdown, and it would still take 10 min before it happened. With the Spectra, it's usually less than one minute. Reducing the pumping time to only 10-15 minutes is not only more convenient and comfortable, it makes it much easier to pump at work, and it's much healthier. When you pump for more than 20-30 minutes at a time without a break, it can actually damage your nipples and breast tissue. So an effective pump is not only easier to use, it's better for you in the long run. I did notice I had to increase the suction when I plugged in the second tubing to use it as a double, so I went from using suction levels 2 & 3 to using 4 & 5. I did not increase the cycle. The vacuum goes up to Level 12, so if the pump does lose suction over the year like my Hygeia did, it looks like there is plenty of power to take up the slack. Someone in another review said they don't know what the "cycle" numbers mean. When a baby is suckling, they typically suck between 60-80 times per minute to get a let down, then between 40-60 times per minute when drinking the milk. The numbers on the cycle setting reflect that. The letdown cycle is 70, meaning in one minute it will "suck" 70 times. Then you can pick from a wide range for your regular pumping. If your baby sucks faster, your body will probably respond better to a higher number. I personally have been pumping on the lowest cycle for comfort, and it seems to draw out more milk for me. I love that the pump remembers which settings you had it on. The only flaw with this is that no matter which setting it was on (regular or let-down cycles) when you turned it off, it turns on in regular mode. I would much prefer it turned on in let-down mode, since what I do is get the flanges positioned in my hands free bra, then turn the pump on with it already attached to me. I have to hit power then quickly hit the let down cycle button to switch it to what I need. Just a slight inconvenience. Since there's no way to adjust the vacuum or cycles while it's off, if you find yourself using the higher levels of suction you definitely want to turn it on and check what settings it's on BEFORE you put your nipple in the flange. I also wish you could see the battery indicator without having to turn it on. Basically, it needs an option to interact with the LCD screen without actually turning on the pump/suction part. A way to view and change your settings before actually starting trying to pump. The only other thing I dislike so far is the timer - I actually love the timer, but there's no "pause" button. So when I was using only one flange and pumped one side, then wanted to switch to the other side, I had to turn it off to do my switch, then when I turned it back on the timer started over. I appreciated being able to see the time, but it goes away as soon as you turn the pump off. Again, a way to keep the screen and settings on, but PAUSE the suction would be a huge help. These two tiny flaws are barely noticeable though when it comes to comparing this to any other pump on the market. The battery and handle are so nice, my old pump had to be plugged in. I have already once had to pick up the pump and go into another room to help my toddler with something, and it was so nice to not have to unhook everything to change rooms. I hear lots of stories of moms pumping in awkward spots because it's the only place with an outlet, so I look forward to NOT having to deal with that. The "instruction" manual that comes with it is a joke, so if you're a first time pumper, go online and learn how pumps work and how to care for them, what the basic parts are, so you know what to do with the pump. _________ My baby is turning 6 months in a few days and I'm still pumping for her at work, every day. I still love this pump. I have not had to change the suction settings, so it's still working great there. I *think* the pump is a little louder than it used to be, or it could just be that I am used to the noise it makes. It's still very quiet, but it does sort of sound like something is rumbling a little in there. I do take it a lot of places and it could be a little beaten up by now. The battery still lasts a long time, I charge it once every 2-3 days. I never use the light. I still wish it had a pause button. I have not had to replace any valves or tubing. Things I don't like after 6 months: I ordered the tote bag and cooler bag from Spectra, and the pump and cooler bag do not both fit in the tote bag easily! I can make them fit but it's very difficult. Plus, the cooler then has to sit on the pump and occasionally it turns the pump on! I was expecting to get a tote bag that was designed to hold these items, but it's just a generic bag. No pockets or dividers inside, just one little pocket on the outside (which I do use for my wallet). But the pump? still amazing. I tell everyone I can about this pump. Worth every penny and more. ... show more

  • Mom of twins, OB/Gyn RN, breastfeeding educator- and I LOVE this pump.
Buy this pump. Seriously, stop looking, buy it. This review is long but will hopefully answer any questions you have. Or post one and I'll try to answer it. Earlier this year I had twins born at 34 weeks. They were doing well, but did spend some time in the NICU. When babies are in the NICU, you become super obsessed with how much milk they are getting. They can't go home until they take their "minimums" and gain weight. As a result, I've pretty much been exclusively pumping since they were born. My girl would latch, but I couldn't tell how much she was getting and she would get tired after a few minutes and wouldn't take the rest of her bottle. My boy had breathing problems at first and was being fed with a tube for the first 10 days. After that he had to learn how to eat and would get tired, so I didn't try to nurse him. Since I had to feed two and wanted to share my supply, pumping was the way to go. Since I had preemies, my insurance paid for me to use a Medela Lactina pump. This is the big blue thing that is "hospital grade" and retails for a boatload ($1500 for the love!). I used the Lactina for the first two months but wanted something more portable (I bought a car adapter so I could plug it in and pump in the car on long days out). And, the Lactina is loud as all get out, which was annoying and I actually covered it with a blanket to muffle the sound so I could pump in the same room my husband and 3 year old daughter were watching TV in so I could be part of the family. I contemplated getting a Medela Freestyle, but read mixed reviews about being able to maintain supply. Having twins I did not want to risk my supply going down. I took a leap of faith and bought this pump using gift cards for about half the cost. I figured if it didn't work at least I wasn't out all the money. Best. Decision. Ever. Awesomeness: -It is SUPER quiet compared to the Lactina. I have no idea how it compares to other pumps, but it is going to be nice to have at work and be able to answer the phone while pumping. -It is pretty portable. I wanted something I could clip to my belt and walk around the house, but that is the Freestyle and I couldn't risk it. This is pretty lightweight, and I'm actually contemplating putting a ribbon through the handle and putting it over my neck. It never fails that when I'm pumping my husband is out of the house and my older daughter needs something. At the very least, I've put it on with my hands-free pumping bra (Simple Wishes brand- buy that too) and been able to put it on the kitchen counter to make bottles or lunch or whatever. Haven't tried cooking dinner yet, but that may happen. -Nightlight is pretty neat, and has two levels. -Timer is a cool feature. Most folks don't need to pump for more than 15-20 minutes, but most folks don't have twins. The timer shuts the pump off after 30 minutes which is how long I pump for. I used to set a timer on my phone, but don't need to do that so much anymore. -Massage feature is pretty nifty. This pump almost pulses when creating suction. It was kind of weird at first since the other pump didn't do it, but it actually makes pumping pretty comfortable. The "massage" feature speeds up the pump and is designed to stimulate letdown. Once you have letdown, you are supposed to turn off the massage feature. (I don't, I like the fastest speed for my pumping. But again, twins.) -Memory feature- the pump remembers what your last "normal" and "massage" settings were and goes back to them. -Vacuum control- I use the pump on either level 2 or 3. It has 12 levels. Wow. As a nurse I'm really wondering who would need level 12. Maybe for someone with inverted nipples. Maybe if the battery ever gets weak I'll need to go up. Quirks: -It took a LONG time (probably 12 hours) to fully charge the battery when I first got the pump. It also says it can run plugged in, which is true, but so far as I can tell actually uses the battery regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. I could be wrong. -If you use the nightlight feature while pumping it will drain your battery faster, and you will likely not get a full three hours of pump time. Probably not a problem for most people but worth noting. -The bottles and pump kit are pretty cheap. That would probably be my biggest gripe about the whole thing. If we are spending this much money on a pump, the kit should be stellar. (Most pump kits are pretty terrible, so this is about par for the course.) But all is not lost. The ends of the tubing actually fit into my kit I had been using with my Medela. Also, and this is a problem with most pump kits, most women would need to lean forward to get the milk to drop down when sitting upright. So, my Lactina kit had removable flanges which I promptly tossed and used the angled ones from Pumpin' Pal. (Buy those too.) Also, I bought a pump adapter kit that worked with the Playtex bottles I was using so I could pump directly into the drop-in liners. (Cleaner that way, eventually the bottles will get gross no matter what you do.) -If you are not using their backflow valves, you need to pay attention to your tubing. I am not, and have gotten some moisture into one of the tubes on the end. I just blow it out with a hair dryer in a couple of seconds. The tubing is nothing special and you could easily replace it with something from the hardware store if you needed to. It would also be pretty easy to jerryrig the tubing from another pump kit, which I may do so I can attach the backflow valves. The "cons" I listed here may seem like a lot, but to me it wasn't enough that I would take away a star. I've had it for two weeks and I love it, and haven't noticed a drop in supply. I'll update this review if anything changes, but I don't see that happening. So go buy this pump. Or put it on your registry or wishlist. You won't be sorry. Links for the products I mentioned: Pumpin' Pal Super Shields, Angled Pumping Flanges, the Best Flanges By Far in a Complete Set of All Sizes Mom Will Need Simple Wishes Hands-Free Breastpump Bra, Pink, XS-L Playtex Drop-Ins System Breast Milk Storage Kit Updated 10/16/13 -A couple more product links for all the parts I'm using with my cobbled-together homemade kit. You really don't NEED anything but the angled flanges and hands-free pumping bra, but if you wanted to piece something together that's a bit more user-friendly, here are the links: Medela Personal Fit Breastsheild Connectors - Medela 87071 Medela Valves & Membranes (Set of 1) UPDATE 10/28/13- I've gone back to work and am taking this pump back and forth. I just put it in a small tote bag I had at home. I made two pump kits so I can leave one at home and one in my office at work and all I take back and forth is the pump. That probably wasn't necessary, but I probably would have ended up forgetting something one day so this was my way to make sure that didn't happen. Pump is awesome, and nobody can hear it when I answer the phone. The doctor in the office next to me is pumping as well, and you can hear her pump down the hall... -Also, I finally attached the backflow valves. I basically just cut the tubing and attached one piece to either side of the valve. It's a small challenge to get the tubing on the large side, but it does fit. Now I can still stick the end of the tubing into my homemade Medela kit and it works great and I don't need to worry about moisture getting into my pump. If you've got questions, post 'em and I'll do my best to answer! (I should probably just make a video...) ... show more

  • Excellent pump for first-time moms and daily use
This pump has been a great experience for me, especially as a first-time mom. It’s very easy to use and comfortable, even during longer pumping sessions. The suction is strong but gentle, and you can easily adjust the settings to what feels best. It’s surprisingly quiet, which makes it perfect for night use or pumping while the baby is sleeping. The battery lasts a long time, so I can use it without being plugged in, which is very convenient for moving around or pumping on the go. Milk output has been great and consistent, and cleaning the parts is simple. Overall, this is a reliable, high-quality pump that makes pumping much less stressful. Definitely worth the price and highly recommended. ... show more

  • I have nothing but good things to say about this pump
I have nothing but good things to say about this pump. My Medela was seriously making me reconsider feeding my baby breast milk due to the painful suction. I was dreading my pumping sessions. Additionally, due to the poor suction, my milk supply was drastically reduced within 3 weeks of returning to work. I didn't fully realize this until my freezer stash had dwindled to almost nothing. In my desperation, I tried every herb and possible galactagogue known to man (or woman). In my search for hospital grade breast pump rental or purchase, I came across an online list of best breast pumps on the market and to my surprise, a brand I'd never heard of came up number one. Enter the Spectra S1. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, I delved in a bit deeper into the pump and found nothing but positive reviews. I also went into Spectra's Facebook page and loved how interactive they are with the customers. Because my insurance company had already covered the Medela (with me paying an up charge for the bag and cooler), I came out of pocket for the Spectra. As a matter of fact, I even got in on Prime because of the Spectra (I was so excited for it that I didn't want to wait). The Spectra is much cheaper than the Medela and a far superior pump. I love that I don't have to carry around extra batteries and that I can pump several sessions on one charge. The pump itself is very gentle. So gentle that I didn't even realize I had the suction much too high until I noticed my breasts had what looked like small cuts all around them. It wasn't painful and like I said, I didn't even notice. Coming from Medela I learned to turn the pump up as high as possible for the best results; this is not necessary with this pump. Another great feature of this pump is the LCD timer and light in the handle. I no longer have to time my sessions on a stopwatch or clock and if I can pry myself from my daughter at night, can get a quick pump session in without her seeing or hearing it. My coworkers can no longer hear the pump and I don't have to worry about being embarassed about them knowing that I'm pumping at that very moment. The only cons are that while the pump remembers your last setting, it doesn't begin in letdown mode so you have to endure one strong suck before you're fast enough to push the letdown button. This isn't too much of an issue for me but I noticed others complaining about this. The other con is that it doesn't come with a bag. I believe there is a designer that's worked with Spectra to offer a nice-looking bag but I just went with the Storksak Olivia bag in blue (this was just my excuse to purchase this bag I'd been coveting for a long time :) My last gripe (this is just a personal gripe) is that the flanges are one piece. This makes for finding a hands free pumping bra difficult and expensive (the Medela bustier is made for the two piece set). I combated this by purchasing cheap clearance sports bras at Walmart and cutting small holes to squeeze the flanges through. I've purchased the Nenesupply Medela adapter and now have 3 pump kits (Ameda kit with tubing will fit without any hacks). Others have complained that the Spectra bottle doesn't seem to stay on the flange too securely and that the measurements may be off, but I have not had those problems. I personally pump into whatever bottle that's attached to the flanges and pour into either my Tommee Tippee storage pods or Purity breast milk storage bags. No pump can completely empty your breasts like a baby can but the Medela comes close. Combining this pump with manual expression and lots of diligence has slowly helped me increase my supply. It's not yet back at what it was, but we're making progress. There's been one small snag that was due to my own dumb mistake but I contacted Spectra through email in the middle of the night and got s response within hours. Customer service is incredibly friendly and efficient; you can tell they're proud of their product and love to help people. I've recommended this pump to everyone I know and will continue to do so. Thank you Spectra for bringing an affordable high quality, hospital grade pump to us. ... show more

  • Every mom should have a Spectra S1!
Some background information about me: my baby is 6 months and I have been pumping since he was about 3 months when I returned to work. I started out using the Medela Symphony which I rented from the hospital and decided to purchase a pump. I found out that my insurance company would cover the pump but after some research, I decided that I would rather buy my own pump than get a Medela portable based on the reviews and feedback from other moms. My criteria for pumps was to find something that was portable, hospital-grade and affordable and the all the breast pumps from Spectra fit this bill. I currently own the M1 as well. I chose to buy the S1 pump mainly for the rechargeable battery since it is more convenient for me at work where I have little time during my breaks. What I like about the Spectra S1: -Aesthetically, this pump is super cute and a good size to stash in the tote bag I also purchased from Spectra. It has a nice handle to move the pump from one place to another and the LCD screen is a good size. -The pump is quiet which is nice for those late night pumping sessions or at work. -Is the ultimate portable hospital grade pump - unlike the Medela Symphony it doesn't require an outlet to be near by. -Since I started using the Spectra pumps in my fourth month, my supply has shown an increase, even when using the M1 which is a smaller pump than both the Medela or S1. This is completely subjective but I feel since switching away from the Symphony, my supply increased and I haven't had to use any galactagogues since. I know that each person responds differently to different pumps but I can say that it has been entirely positive for mine. :-) -Customer service: Spectra Baby has the best customer service! I've contacted them via their Facebook page regarding various issues/questions/purchases and they have been extremely responsive. I think Amazon is amazing with their customer service and it's great that Spectra Baby is up to par with their customer service as well. -Price: For a hospital grade breast pump at ~$300 this is a steal! On all levels of looks, usage, technology, price the Spectra S1 beats the Medela Symphony handily especially since the Symphony costs over a thousand dollars. In response to the cons: Yes, I wasn't a fan at first of their bottles and flanges etc because I was used to the Medela ones where the flanges disconnect but that is just a matter of aesthetics. Their collection bottles and flanges work great and I just had to personally get over using the Medela ones. I bought some Pumpin' Pals that weren't compatible with Spectra's bottles and I think that's why I was so resistant to change. Overall, I would highly recommend Spectra S1 breast pump as well as any of their other pumps in their line up to any mother. I hope my insurance will one day cover this pump but until then I am happy to use my own money to buy this because it is so amazing. I have two Spectra pumps if that isn't enough recommendation. Also highly recommended because Spectra's customer service is fantastic and I can't say enough about it. It makes me comfortable about spending my own money knowing I can be heard by the company when I've had issues/questions etc that were quickly resolved. Thank you again Spectra!!! ~Belinda Racasa ... show more

  • Best Pump but Pricey Replacement Parts
I bought this after hearing it compared the the Medela Symphony. I'd been renting the Symphony after having my supply tank from using the Medela Pump in Style Advanced. I was a little nervous at first because (1) it's another $200 investment and (2) I was worried my supply would tank again. I'm happy to say this is the best pump I've ever used! I get more out in less time than the Symphony because it's so much more effective at stimulating letdowns. I'm guessing because the suction is much more "fluttery" so it feels more like a baby (as much as a piece of plastic really can). I love that you can control both cycle and suction separately, too. And I cannot wax poetically enough about how much I love the rechargable battery. I am no longer tied to outlets! I love that I can pump anywhere. The charge lasts a long while, too. If you were to plug it back in at the end of every day or two you'd be just fine. So why 4 and not 5 stars? Replacement parts are pricey and there's no way to get "official" Spectra parts via prime. The backflow filter broke off in the flange (my fault--it fell on the hard floor) so we had to buy a replacement and it was $19 for just the one set of flange, backflow filter, and valve thing. If you need to replace both that means it's almost $40, and there isn't a way to get the official Spectra brand with prime so you have to look at reviews and cross your fingers that what you get will work. And of course since you can't buy the parts at Target or wherever if you don't want to single pump for a week/pay extra for shipping ordering via Prime is kinda important. I wish that the replacement parts were cheaper, the official replacement parts were available via prime, and/or Spectra would expand its market so I could pick up replacements easily at Target (or wherever). Also, 2 helpful notes: 1. Unlike the Medela it doesn't start in letdown mode so you need to press a button for that. The first two times I used it I used the settings in reverse and was wondering why I was getting so little. As soon as I realized my mistake my output went way up again.I 2. You'll want to invest in a proper pumping bra for this pump. With the Medela I'd rigged up a sports bra with holes in it but because of how the flanges are built you can't do that with this pump. Overall, though, this pump worked so well for me and I will be singing its praises from here on out. It was 100% worth the investment and even though extra parts are pricey, it's worth it to no longer have to worry about my supply tanking due to a less-than-effective pump, to not have to shell out $70 a month to rent a similar quality pump, and to be able to pump anywhere with a charged batter. ... show more

  • but this pump is AWESOME! I have used 3 different pumps now
I never write reviews, but this pump is AWESOME! I have used 3 different pumps now, and this is the most comfortable, empties my breasts the quickest and most efficiently, and is so so quiet! I had a preemie, and had to exclusively pump to feed him in the NICU, that being said, after many many failed attempts to breastfeed once we able to try, he never succeeded (long story with tons of lactation help and support, I won't get into it) so I am exclusively pumping now and feeding expressed breast milk to my now 3 month old. I have struggled with chronic plugged milk ducts and mastitis, despite round the clock pumping (every 2-3 hours). I was almost ready to give up and use the freezer stash until I run out and switch to formula, but I decided to try one "last ditch effort" and purchase this pump after reading several reviews and consumer reports/tests. It is worth every penny! The suction is more of a massaging/vibrating suction and I let down within one minute of turning it on. I can then switch to the expression mode and I am able to fully empty my breast after about 15-20 min, it was taking me a full 30 with other pumps. It really feels like it did when my older boys were breastfeeding as infants, and not so much like I stuck my breasts into a vacuum. I do not have the extreme shooting pain in my breast whole pumping with this one at all, and I can keep the suction relatively low at 4 in the expression and massage modes and have success. My other pumps feel like they pull the nipple very hard, even on a low suction level, and I tried 3 different flange sizes to attempt to prevent sore and cracked nipples. I have used hospital grade that I rented, amenda and medela pump in style pumps throughout my short 3 month pumping journey. I did have to purchase the 28 mm flanges for this pump, but I never feel that strong painful pull I get from other pumps. I also love the electrical display and memory. If I am busy and trying to run around after my 3 other boys, I just have to turn it on and it "knows" my settings. It is light weight and I can carry it with me as I complete my morning tasks to get the big boys off to school and then myself off to work. I pack it with me to work, the size and weight make it quite portable. It is super quiet and does not disturb my coworkers like the other pumps did. The night light is a great feature during the middle of the night when my husband and baby boy are sleeping, I know it's a small feature, but now I don't have to use my cell phone to see in order to pump in the middle of the night. I just don't have enough good things to say about this pump, I have had no clogged ducts for a week now and have my fingers crossed that this pump was the answer. ... show more
