I've made a few loaves of sourdough before using my own tools, but got this as a gift from a friend who knows I love to bake. I haven't made sourdough in years though, and this tool made it easy and fun. The measuring band was a handy item as it allowed me to track the time I allowed the starter to "eat" while the cloth allowed the fermentation to proceed with the natural air from the room. A nice gift! Haven't tried the results yet, but the starter looks good and bubbly and it smells OK, so I have great confidence that the results will be good. I think it should have a small sample of dehydrated sourdough starter to allow pure beginners the full experience, but I guess that would make the product much more difficult to get approved for sale.

I've been trying to make sourdough for a few weeks but it has been a lot harder than I thought. I was using like a pasta sauce jar before and it was hard to use and clean and maintain, but there wasn't much fermentation either. I thought maybe it would be easier to wash and manage things with this but that there wouldn't be any fermentation or growth, but after a few attempts and some time, I was able to see the starter culture grow! It was a good size jar, big enough to make a decent amount of sourdough but small enough to fit in the fridge. I like how it has the thermometer sticker so it's easier to keep track of the conditions the culture is growing in. There were some cheaper options that I saw but I went with the middle of the road one (this kit) and it was pretty good for the price; the appearance and structure are pretty solid, doesn't feel fragile or like it'll break and it performed well.

Although I am a sourdough baker, already owning many bread-making products (including various sourdough jars), I bought this jar to make my own red wine vinegar. I started making my own vinegar about 6 months ago and ended up always making a mess when filling, refilling, storing, and retrieving the red wine/vinegar due to “inadequate” equipment. More specifically, I was looking for 1) a larger jar capable of holding up to 1L of liquid, 2) a wide mouth that would help storing the vinegar’s mother and make for easy (re)filling, and 3) a cloth cover (making vinegar requires air/oxygen to permeate through the bottle). This product checks all of these constraints, in addition to incorporating a nice set of additional tools, and, as such, I am very happy with this purchase. The product comes in a plain, boring, and unassuming white box but was very well packaged and protected. The jar itself feels very sturdy, heavy, and premium – much better than most of the jars I already own. Both covers fit the jar nicely and securely. At the end of the day, it’s a graduated jar so there is not much to it: it will hold your liquid/starter and allow you to monitor volume changes thanks to the tick marks. It solved my specific problems making vinegar and I haven’t made a mess since using it. Although I have not used it for sourdough starter, I can tell, using my experience as a sourdough bread maker for the last couple of years , that this jar should work well to maintain a sourdough starter, especially to get your initial starter going (i.e., a lot of feeding) and if you are looking to make relatively large quantities of bread/pastries (i.e., multiple loaves). As a minor side note, I really like the design of the entire product: I love the bright orange accent color, like the tick mark design with the bread icons, and think the logo looks nice. I also really like the dough scraper and the spatula it comes with: I did not buy the product for these items but have ended up using them, much more frequently than anticipated, for baking and scraping. I can’t comment on the temperature gauge or the scooper since I do not use them.

I got this to replace my old one because it was too small and the opening wasn’t wide enough. This is the perfect size and shape!! Super easy to feed and the lid is perfect!! My last had a tight seal twist lid that didn’t allow enough air in, and the cloth cover let in too much air. This one has a rubber gasket on the top that allows just a tiny bit of air in and helps keep the temperature up while feeding! All in all I highly recommend this set for anyone interested in sourdough!!

This jar arrived extremely well packaged. The wide mouth on it makes it way easier to use than a mason jar. The band that goes around it is also really helpful because it marks more things than just the height- you can position it to mark the time/day as well. Although I haven't used the silicone lid yet, it seems to have a great seal on it. BUT the surprise MVP was the orange spatula that it included. I didn't know I needed a spatula this shape! It's perfect for getting stuff out of jars, like peanut butter or the blender.
