I have a couple of these and I absolutely love them. I like the extra space if I decide to double a batch of my mead. Good sturdy quality glass but it is quite heavy. Seals just fine with my airlocks that fit my one gallon carboy. Cleaning can be a bit of a pain but if you use a no rinse sanitizer you'll do just fine. ... show more

You can use a normal bubbler stopper without that other blue thing. The stopper will fit inside the full hole and seal good.

I bought this so I could start brewing larger batches of mead, and this thing is solid. Would definitely recommend, and I'll probably be back to buy a few more in the next couple of months when the local fruit starts coming in :)

    • Cracked after a year!
Original review: I got a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas last year, and it sparked a whole new hobby for me. I ended up getting this to replace the plastic keg as a fermenter. I really like this little carboy. The glass is very thick, it's easy to clean (with a carboy brush), and I am more confident with the use of a vapor lock to keep the outside out of my fermenting malts. I am pleased with my purchase. One Year Update: I owned this carboy for 13 months, and made several batches of beer and wine in it. I was always pleased. Then two nights ago, I woke up to a sound equivalent to a stone hitting a piece of sheet metal. I walked into the kitchen, and saw this carboy on the counter, and it had a huge crack halfway across the bottom! I couldn't believe that an empty glass carboy would crack while just sitting on the counter. It's Winter, and I use a woodstove for my primary heat source, which pretty much means my house will be 60 degrees at night, and 68 during the day. That should not have been enough of a spread to induce thermal stress. I'm thankful that it was empty. I went from being very pleased to being very unimpressed. I know people who have used the same carboy for 40 years with no problems. I bought one that lasted a year. Quality is lacking. ... show more

I thought it was a 5 gallon jar, but it’s only a 3 gallon. Quality is good though. Very thick
