View largerWHAT IS A CAPACITOR?A capacitor is a passive (a component that consumes but does not produce energy) two terminal electrical component. In building a sound system for your car, you would want to use a capacitor for a couple of different reasons.WHY DO I NEED ONE?The main reason a capacitor is always recommend, is for power reserve. The capacitor stores energy and releases it very quickly to the amplifier(s). How does this help? It’s very simple: Music is dynamic, no matter what type you listen to. The dynamics in musical content can vary from soft voices, and very quickly transition to thundering bass notes. These moments are where the benefit of having a capacitor is heard. The amplifier requires a constant amount of steady power to function efficiently and power the speakers. A capacitor will keep the power going to the amplifier consistent and stabilized, which means a better sounding system. IMPORTANT: The remote output of the head unit is connected to the remote turn on of the capacitor. Pick up the cable coming from the POSITIVE (+) battery terminal. Place the supplied charging resistor between the end of this cable and the positive terminal of the capacitor. The capacitor will begin charging. Charging generally takes 5 to 60 seconds. During charging, the voltage shown in the 3 digit display will rise rapidly, then slow as it approaches the voltage of your vehicle’s battery. When fully charged, the display voltage will stop rising. If you have a voltmeter, you can first measure the voltage of your car battery. Then you will know with accuracy that the capacitor is fully charged. CAUTION!! During charging, the resistor will become hot. This is normal, but exercise caution during the charging process. Took forever to charge. Wouldn't charge on the car I was using which is a hybrid. Was stuck at 9.7v. Hooked it up to my Yukon and it finally started to go up. Works good besides that. Volts drop as it is needed and jumps back to normal almost instantly. Would buy again and a great price.

This is a great capacitor. It is very easy to install. As long as you follow the directions. It definitely stopped my headlights from dimming when the base hits from my amplifier makes no difference if you have two car batteries or a high put alternator I think you still should get one of these just to have some reserve. Folks, I believe this a large ELECTROLYTIC capacitor. I don't think it's a bunch of Maxwell-style Supercaps or Ultracaps. That means this is one huge long set of metal foils with electrolytic paste between the layers. They are probably wrapped in a long spiral cylinder. For you EE types, all that foil implies a fair amount of series inductance which interferes with instant response to current spikes. Consider connecting a smaller electrolytic cap, say 4700 uF (with 35V working voltage), wired in parallel right across the big terminals or right at your load. That will give better transient response. I am an EE and my comments below probably apply to all similar competitive "Car Radio Capacitors". Here are some observations: [1] If this was really a 3.5F Supercap or Ultracap, it would be FAR more expensive. So electrolytic fabrication is a reasonable idea IF it is built and tested properly. Considering the low cost, I now have my doubts. "Sometimes you get what you pay for". [2] However, that electrolytic paste can dry out, leak and/or partially separate from the foil plates over time. That could happen especially in the hot trunk of a car heated by a nearby kilowatt amplifier.That deterioration of the paste causes less capacitance therefore you should test it often. It also means this product may have a limited life. If you open the trunk and find this cap hot, you might have BOTH reduced capacitance AND a safety issue. The "instructions" hint at all this by recommending that you make sure that there is no fluid leakage from the top vent. Note that high heat or foil separation damage could occur in shipping from China. Do they test them when they arrive?? Other damage could include hidden detachment of the foils from the internal bus. My packaging showed no damage. [3] I tested this and it is WAY less than 3.5 Farads. The supplied 51 Ohm resistor charges this cap using 12V / 51 Ohms or about 1/4 of an Ampere (250 mA), initial charging rate. I called SSL and they said it should charge in about a minute using the supplied resistor. Using only 1/10 Amp (100 mA - LESS than the supplied resistor), I only took about 15 seconds to charge to +12V. Less current and less time means this is MUCH less than 3.5 Farads. There is a very rough rule of thumb here: 1 Amp causes a 1 Volt rise in 1 second in a 1 Farad cap. Also note that the DVM decimal points did not blink during charge up as the "Instructions" state. [4] The two large silver plus and minus terminals go directly into the cap body. I cannot see any intervening MOSFET or other circuitry in series with those big terminals. That makes sense since a LOT of current might quickly exit this cap on power spikes. That direct connection implies that the little DVM is not required to use this as a capacitor (but is useful for SAFETY). I tried it both ways and there was no difference. As mentioned elsewhere, don't overtighten these terminals. [5] The small silver screw third "remote" terminal must be connected externally to +12 Volts DC. The remote is ONLY to power the DVM, nothing else. The return for this DVM board is the large minus terminal. My DVM seems to work okay. You may want to install a switch between +12V and the "remote" terminal if not already included in your radio. The DVM certainly eats a little current. Obviously the DVM will not wake up until there are most of 12 Volts at the remote terminal. All of this is NOT clear in the Instructions. Hey folks, why should a customer have to finish the "documentation" ?? If you order one of these, you may luck out and get a good one. I will not return mine because of the high cost of return shipping (it's heavy!!). Also I don't want to take a chance and get another lemon. I'm giving this one star because the idea is good but the quality control, as the customer receives it, is questionable. ... show more
