Description

Mavis closed the door on a red Mazda Miata. She waited by the car, holding an overnight case the same color as the automobile. Dressed in black: raincoat, slacks, shoes and scarf, she looked to him like an animated shadow, or perhaps Death's fashionable assistant. Hank Castor planned a three-day visit with his daughter Betsy in Pullman, Washington, where she attends graduate school at WSU - Washington State University. On their way to a popular roadhouse perched above the Snake River, they narrowly escape a head-on collision. The other vehicle leaves the highway and Hank and Betsy rush to give first-aid. She is shocked to recognize the young driver as Reed Poole, a WSU student. His injuries are fatal, but he gives Betsy a cryptic message before dying. "Tell her it was murder, not suicide." Compelled to understand Reed's message, Betsy asks for her father's help. Hank, conscious of the power of grief and loss, agrees. Instead of a fall weekend sightseeing in the Palouse, the state's scenic agricultural heartland, they are caught up in a unique investigation - find a murder victim without knowing who, where, or when.
