    • Big Sound, Big Bass, Lots of Features
If this is considered the lower end of Sony’s ULT Tower lineup, I can only imagine how impressive the higher-end models must be, because this speaker is already impressive. The sound quality is the first thing that stands out. I’ve primarily used it outdoors so far, and the bass is powerful and booming without becoming distorted or muddy. What really impressed me, though, is that Sony didn’t sacrifice clarity for bass. I played several symphonic pieces, and I could hear the individual instruments clearly, with plenty of power behind the music. I haven’t connected it to my home entertainment setup yet, but I already have a few movies in mind that I think would be dramatically better with this speaker. It has the potential to add a completely different level of impact to movie watching. Beyond sound quality, the variety of inputs makes this a surprisingly versatile piece of equipment. The microphone input, along with independent microphone volume control, makes it useful as a karaoke machine and even a reasonably priced PA system for something like a fire hall, community room, or similar space. I have an inexpensive pair of wireless microphones that I connected to the mic input, and the setup worked very well. I could easily see using this for a one-person performance with vocals and a microphone on an acoustic guitar. The controls are also thoughtfully laid out. There are controls accessible from the top and rear, while the bass and volume controls are conveniently located on the front where they’re easy to reach. Battery life has been good in my experience. I started using it straight out of the box and ran the battery down completely. I then plugged it in and left it charging while I went about other things. I didn’t measure the exact charging time, but when I came back about 3.5 hours later, it was fully charged. It charges from the AC power cable, operates on battery power, and can also be charged while in use. It is not powered by AC. This is definitely a substantial speaker. It weighs about 28 pounds and is fairly large, but the sturdy handles on all four corners make it much easier to carry, either by yourself or with someone helping. I haven’t been able to test pairing it with another Sony speaker because I don’t own one. I do have speakers from other brands that use TWS pairing, but I wasn’t able to get this speaker to connect with them. Since those aren’t Sony speakers, I wouldn’t consider that a negative against this particular model. Overall, I’m very impressed with the build quality, sound, versatility, and features. The combination of powerful bass, clear audio, microphone support, multiple inputs, portability, and battery operation makes this much more than just a typical Bluetooth speaker. I’m super excited to have the Sony ULT Tower 5! It is a large speaker, and the sound quality is spectacular—powerful, clear, and perfect for filling a room. It connects very easily through Bluetooth, and I also like that it can be connected to the TV with a cable. The phone app makes the sound very customizable, which is one of my favorite features. You can adjust the audio depending on what you’re listening to and even add fun sound effects to make a party more entertaining. The lights add a great party vibe too.     • One Of My New Favorites
As an audio engineer, I'm always interested in trying out new equipment, and this one definitely surprised me. Though it seems to be marketed as a party/ DJ/ event speaker (and I will definitely use it for that, too), this speaker works really well as a portable speaker for around the house or when I'm playing sports with friends. It is just under 30 pounds and has handles that make it very easy to carry around. The sound is also great. It has four sound modes (most of which seem to be for increasing bass) but there is a "flat" mode that doesn't adjust the input and is great for everyday use. And man, this thing is a powerhouse. I could barely get it above 50% volume before thinking it was getting too loud. But even when pushing it to its limits, the sound didn't get muddy or distorted. It can be controlled with the buttons on the top and back or through the app which makes it convenient when I am not right next to it. It also has a plug specifically for karaoke which is very fun for parties. When a microphone is plugged in for karaoke, you are also able to adjust the key of the audio in real time which I have never seen built into a speaker before, but it is one of my favorite features. I just wish it worked without needing to plug in a mic. This is easily one of my new favorite speakers, and I'll be taking it with me whenever I need high-quality audio and portability. ... show more
