    • Good for it's intended use
It's a good mic but there are no perfect mics so it's important to understand what you are buying: - The ECM-M1 sounds great if you are close to the camera and keeping a somewhat consistent distance from it. I'd say less than 1.5 meters (5 feet) close. As you get further away, expect the sound quality to drop off. This is not a flaw with this mic but a general rule that usually applies. - If you really want the ultimate in sound quality, this is not your mic. Instead you'll need a studio setting with a dedicated condenser (or dynamic) mic positioned close. You'll want to use XLR cabling with a dedicated 32-bit float recorder. You'll also want a sound treated room to combat sound reflecting around. Yes this is expensive and inconvenient, thus most people actually are looking for a "good enough" mic for their target budget and desired convenience level. - If you want "decent" quality and can not always be close to the camera, prioritize a lav mic setup. I use the DJI Mic 2 and think it's a good product. Note that, when close to the camera, the ECM-M1 sounds better to me than the DJI but the DJI does not limit your position and is thus a better "do it all" choice. A big perk of the ECM-M1 is the convenience factor. No batteries to manage (and many of these devices have batteries that degrade over time). No risk of damage to the 3.5mm plug and good quality sound as long as you are close and don't vary your distance from the mic too much. It can really be the ultimate in "quality with convenience" if you can work within its imposed constraints. Also consider using two fully-independent mics together (such as the ECM-M1 and DJI MIC-2 lav-only). This gives you fully-redundant audio sources and can rescue a take if one of them has poor quality or fails to record. ... show more

I love this mic. I use it for shooting really loud drift cars and it never clips. The sound is clear and directional, and it’s so easy to take on and off. I love that it just connects directly to the hot shoe with no wires to deal with, which makes setup super simple. The small size is perfect for traveling if you don’t have space for a massive setup.     • Use case is very niche
It’s a fine microphone, but I returned it because its use case is quite narrow: events where you can’t mic people… maybe. Thing is a normal shotgun mic is more versatile, you can boom it above people for more serious shoots, so I’ll just use my shotgun mics for events. In the past vloggers would have loved this mic, but the DJI and Rode and Hollyland wireless mics are so good, and so easy to use, that this mic becomes useless (at least to my eyes). I’ll wish I had it when I’m at the zoo with my kids… as it’s less serious looking than a longer mic. Maybe I’ll get the little Sony mic with the MI interface for that. I bought it originally because I was going to use it for interviewing studio owners and I thought it would be an easy way to get audio from both of us walking around while they showed off there studio… no it’s actually horrible at this compared to the Rode wireless mics… they don’t require people to face the camera, etc. I love Sony, but I honestly can’t think of a reason to own this mic. Also, it sticks up too high. Hard to use in crowded events when on a second camera hanging from a strap as one is always worried it will snap off. Sound quality was good, but not super special. I used at women’s conference and thought the super directional mode would allow me to hone in more on the 1 to 1 conversations and it did, but it wasn’t anything super special. There ability to change modes is great, but just not that useful! Also the mic takes up the hot-shoe, and blocks professional equipment like monitors, handles, etc. A normal shotgun mic could be mounted on the rig in ways to accommodate this. ... show more
