  • I only cared about playing my international Blu-Ray's. It does that well.
Exactly as advertised. Fits my needs. I had a couple of old British Documentaries that I had sitting around on Blu-Ray from when I lived overseas. This device was very simple to set up, the UI is a bit low-tech and antiquated but it meets my needs. Would recommend if that is all you are looking to do. Picture quality if quite fine. ... show more

  • My region free blueray player
I was so happy to finally order and receive this... Since i've started collecting many movies that are of different regions... I can now continue collecting some of my favorite programs that I would not be able to see on a regular d v d or blu ray player.

  • Works only on newer TVs?
I wrote a scathing review several weeks ago and now must correct it in fairness. This unit seems to not work at all on M1 and Intel Macs and older smart TVs. Did not work on my Samsung 10 yrs. old very nice smart TV that everything else works on. However, my electronic tech brother-in-law had not problem connecting it to a new LG smart TV in my house, and it works perfectly with a wonderful picture and sound quality. So, if you have a newer smart TV I think this machine will work well for you. ... show more

  • works well, but no manual controls, and crops widescreen images
There's much to like about this player, but it's not perfect. * It's very small and lightweight. * It's EASY to use. I had no problems plugging it into my Polaroid HDTV. No setup was needed. It easily recognized my NTSC and PAL DVDS, and my NTSC Blu-Ray DVDs. * But this player has NO manual controls. Not even an On/Off switch. This is a HORRIBLE idea. What happens if I can't find the remote? Or if it breaks? Will I have to buy another remote at inflated prices? Or not find a fully compatible one? I think every electronic equipment -- cameras, DVD players, TVs -- should have as many dedicated buttons or switches as possible. * This is my first Blu-Ray player -- and I am NOT impressed with Blu-Ray. I compared two DVDs of The Unseen on this player, one Blu-Ray, and one regular DVD. Yes, the Blu-Ray version was marginally sharper -- but only because I scrutinized the scene. Had I not been looking for it, I doubt I'd have noticed that the Blu-Ray version was sharper than the regular DVD. I don't think it's really worth the extra price of Blu-Ray discs. So I'll stick to DVDs whenever there's a big difference in pricing. Some people say you need an extra-large HDTV screen to appreciate Blu-Ray's superiority. My flatscreen HDTV in 40" diagonal. Perhaps on a larger screen, the Blu-Ray improvement would be more noticeable? * This player claims to improve the visuals on regular DVDs, but I've not noticed any improvement over my older DVD player. * This player CROPS the image of my widescreen DVDs. That is, widescreen movies appear squished, and when I widen the image on my TV, then some of the image edges are lost. I didn't have this problem with my previous DVD player, a region-free Pioneer player (not Blu-Ray), that never squished the widescreen images to begin with. This player's cropping of widescreen images happens with both Blu-Ray and regular DVDs, though it's no problem with TV shows that were originally shot in a boxy format, such as Monsters . ... show more

  • It’s a keeper
This was a great purchase. I collect anime. Some series are only available in region B Blu-ray format. This player has allowed me to purchase and watch titles that were unavailable because of price or format. It’s about 2/3 of the size of my older Blu-ray player. I hardly notice it at the base of my tv. I haven’t had it for very long, but so far, so good. I’ll submit an update if there are any issues. I only have 2 minor complaints. 1. The remote is super tiny, but it works fine. Just aesthetics. 2. The auto-shutdown feature isn’t adjustable. It probably isn’t a big deal to most people. However, I frequently pause what I’m watching to get snacks, etc. and when I get back the unit has turned off. Honestly, sometimes I walk away for 15+ minutes. It’s a minor complaint, but worth mentioning. Bottom line: great value; I’m very pleased with this unit; if you need a region free player this one is a keeper. ... show more

  • Great compact multi-region player
Very slim, compact unit. Does everything it says it does. DVD playback is region-free (R0) meaning just insert any DVD from around the world and it plays automatically. Blu-Ray playback is multi-region meaning you need to manually set the region, but this is extremely simple to do, just the press of one button after powering on the unit. (My previous Seiki multi-region Blu-Ray Player required a 'secret code' to be entered to change zones, but thankfully not so with this Sony model - this is so much quicker to do.) Haven't noticed any problems with any DVD or Blu-Ray source as yet and I have a huge library of DVDs and Blu-Rays from around the globe. Great picture too. The unit seems solid enough for it's price range and, as it's a Sony, I'd expect it to last a while. If you want to connect it to the internet, you'll need to attach a cable, as this unit doesn't have Wi-Fi built-in (you'll have to upgrade to the next model up to get that). One last thing to note is that the only video output is HDMI, and the only sound output is also through HDMI or via co-ax. There are none of the 'ye olde fashioned standard A/V outputs' such as S-Video, component, composite or even plain old stereo jacks. So this will only work on displays and A/V receivers equipped with HDMI or co-ax. That's about the only down side I can see though and I'm sure there aren't that many customers who would care about that these days anyway. For the price, it's absolutely great. ... show more
