  • Great picture, lots of features but very pricey for its size!
Size: 42 Style: TV Only
I recently bought the 42 inch version of A90K and wanted to share some my thoughts about this TV with others who are maybe thinking of purchasing it. It's an extremely expensive TV for its size (it's probably the most expensive small TV out there right now) but for those of us who want the latest and greatest features in a small size this TV is one of the only 2 small OLEDs offered right now. Picture quality: Probably the best thing about the TV, I'm really impressed by the quality of the picture coming from an older Sony LCD TV. The colors are really accurate out of the box and I didn't really tinker with the settings too much (I'm using the Custom picture mode, with Brightness set to 30-35 and Peak Luminance set to Low, contrast at 90, gamma at 0 and black level at 50) to get the picture I'm comfortable with (the picture settings are very customizable so most people should be able to adjust the picture to their liking). I've watched a variety of content so far (sports, movies/shows, news programs, etc.) and haven't noticed any issues as of yet. I'm keeping the Peak Luminance setting at Low to avoid the dreaded Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL) from kicking in and changing brightness as I'm watching stuff. Reflections: My small living room has bunch of windows (w/blinds) so reflection handling is important to me. During the day I keep the blinds mostly in the closed position (lots of light still gets through, though) and the picture quality is actually pretty decent and I have no trouble watching any type of content (you can adjust Peak Luminance/brightness in the settings to your liking but be wary of ABL at higher brightness settings). However, if I open the blinds it's a different story as the TV can't really get bright enough to overcome all of the reflections so it can be annoying. The screen finish on the TV is semi-gloss/semi-matte (similar to A80J and A80K) and NOT glossy/mirror-like like most other OLEDs (LG C2, for example) which I think is probably better for my environment as the mirror-like reflections would probably drive me crazy during the day. On this TV the reflections are more duller and not widely diffused. Something to keep in mind if you have a really bright room where you can't control the amount of light coming in or a room where you have light fixtures directly opposite the TV. Sound: I don't have a soundbar so I'm using the TV's built-in speakers. The default sound mode on the TV is set to Standard but I've run into numerous issues with this mode on. For example, dialogue between people in movies/shows is way off. There are other sound modes like Dolby and Cinema that are a bit better but still not great. It is possible to customize the settings for each mode and I'm still playing around with them to try and fix the sound issues I'm experiencing (UPDATE: I solved my sound issues by adjusting the 125Hz and 250Hz equalizer under "Sound settings — Sound Customization — Equalizer" so try this if voices are difficult to hear or sound is uneven). Remote: It's backlit which is a very nice feature. It's also lightweight but it doesn't include the physical number pad which might be a problem for some people who watch cable and like to input channel numbers. I'm streaming all my stuff so this remote works very well for me. PlayStation/Gaming: The TV works seamlessly with my PlayStation 5 and supports VRR. There are 4 HDMI ports but only 2 support HDMI 2.1 (one of them is also for eARC), so keep that in mind if you have multiple devices that need 2.1. Smart features: I have a YouTube TV subscription and use other Google services so the fact this TV comes with Google TV as the smart OS is perfect. Navigating through the menus is fairly smooth and I haven't run into any issues as of yet. Build quality: I feel like the build quality is poor, particularly in the back of the TV where everything is made out of plastic, including the top plastic plate. There are clearly visible manufacturing marks on the plastic plate. For a premium TV from their Master Series line and a TV priced at ~$1400 this is not acceptable in my opinion and this is one of the things where they could and should've done much better. Price: As I said earlier, it's way overpriced given its small size and is another thing I don't like. Maybe in the future these small OLEDs will be cheaper but right now the prices very high. As a PC/Mac monitor: Haven't had a chance to hook up the TV to my Mac but plan to do it so I can't really comment on the TV as a monitor yet. I'll try to update the review once I've played around with it a bit more. (UPDATE: I had no issues hooking up the TV to my 2021 Macbook Pro 16 inch but it's limited to 60Hz refresh rate and VRR doesn't work). ... show more

  • Premium Features into a mid-range screen size
Size: 48 Style: TV Only
This TV is a follow up to what was already an award winning OLED TV in the A9. So Sony sets a high expectation for itself in TV's. I jumped from a mid-range 4k tv I'd had for seven years due to OLED and the benefits it has for gaming. This TV does not disappoint. Plugged my ps5 in and it connected right registering the Sony tv and flipped VRR and automapped my HDR settings for the best possible picture. The TV does not support Dolby Atmos for gaming which is a slight disappointment for my Series X, but it does for television watching. Overall though response times for both console and PC have been phenomenal and more than good enough even if this tv does not support sync/and freesync so it can more than suitably be a computer monitor to game on. If you're a hardcore gamer into the competitive scene, I doubt you'd use your TV to compete on in ranked games regardless. This TV does well to register what you are doing and smartly adjusts picture settings on your different inputs. The remote has a sleek aluminum finish and cuts down size removing number buttons. The android TV is integrated which reduces that need, but if you prefer it, they do bundle in the old style remote with number inputs which I thought was nice. Now finally, for the TV part of this TV review. This is a premium OLED TV and you are going to pay a premium price, but Sony builds a great tv, and the picture and audio on this TV reflects that. OLED handles dark blacks and movement so much better than an LED. This TV has a wonderful viewing angle and it's more than bright enough to hang in a bedroom and smaller living space. Most OLED's have trouble with brightness so this isn't shocking or anything profound but this TV is adequate for what will be it's likely uses. The sound is incredible, the tv makes it seem sounds coming from the whole screen to make audio feel more real, this won't replace a pricy sound bar, but it makes for an excellent natural sound for a TV that pairs well with the picture in your screen Overall this tv comes at a premium price, but the build, look, and quality is that of a premium tv. You will not be disappointed buying this tv, but for pure gamers, LG C2 may have more bells and whistles. I got this tv 25% off and I do not regret the price I paid because the tv feels the weight it carries. 5 Stars and I'm excited to put more milage on it the next few years. ... show more

  • Terrific picture quality and outstanding sound
Size: 42 Style: TV Only
The media could not be loaded. Let me start of by saying this is the 1st ever OLED TV I've owned and WOW! I've owned it just over a month. Perfect tv for those who have wanted a top tier tv at a reasonable SIZE. Set up wasn't too bad a lot of folks making a big deal about this being a Google TV and I get it coming from years of using Roku it takes a little time getting used to navigating the UI but at the end of the day it's just another Android tv. The picture quality is bar none the best I have ever owned. Deep, rich, vibrant colors super dark almost ink like blacks. I mean 4K is truly 4K I've owned multiple 4k TV's but none have come close to this type of picture quality. The sound is something else to behold, OUTSTANDINGLY terrific. Again going by my own experience, I've always needed some sort of external speakers for almost every tv I've owned, not with this one. When Sony says that "the screen is the speaker" they mean it. Truly blown away by the sound. It has a myriad of picture and sound settings to suit every taste. It took some twerking for me to get the picture looking how I wanted it, so if it looks a little too dark be patient you'll soon discover like I did, that OLED TVs tend to be darker than traditional LED/LCD screens. The price is really the only con especially for this size but, again this is the size I was looking for and unfortunately not many manufacturers make OLED TVs those size. Overall couldn't be happier highly recommend. ... show more
