Top Amazon Reviews

  • Initial impression: VERY good!
Style: MSG100HK
At the of time of writing, my Smart Garage Door Opener arrived at 730am (thanks Amazon), I had it installed by 9am, & I'm writing this review at 912am. That alone should tell you how smoothly things went with getting this thing installed and setup to my Apple HomeKit. That said, here is an unbiased review. INSTALL: 9/10. This will be what most people would be concerned about, but I wouldn't stress about it at all. Other than a little time, it was actually very easy to install. In the box was the main device, the power for it (USB block), and the loooong cable that is the sensor (to tell you if your garage is open or closed.) Beyond that, it came with a zip tie, a bunch of double side adhesives (for the sensor and unit), 4 screws (for the sensor), and the instructions (paper and in the app). With or without the instructions, it's pretty obvious how this thing connects to your existing garage opener, and at one point I found myself lone-wolfing the install without instructions because I could tell what I needed to do just by looking at it. All I did was pre-setup my new opener in the house (to connect it to the wifi & Apple HomeKit), disconnected power to my existing garage opener, ran the sensor, connected the two terminal wires, and powered everything on. DONE! Install really was that simple. Though it came with 4 sensor screws, I ended up only using 2 because I found the sensor connected to the garage door itself stuck easier with the double side adhesives; plus the door itself was metal and the screws wouldn't go in as easy as just using the adhesives. HOMEKIT CONNECTION: 10/10. I was very impressed how easy it was to setup this device to Apple HomeKit. Everything starts by downloading the manufacturers app and connecting your phone to the 2.4GHz wifi (the new opener won't work on 5GHz, but it's not a problem at all). The manufacturers app will walk you step-by-step through the setup. It will have you use your camera to scan the HomeKit QR (located on the device itself), you'll have the chance to name your device, and it will even prompt you to enable automations to where it will open or close your garage automatically based on you arriving or leaving your home. That was a huge bonus that I didn't know of, but I added them! HomeKit will setup the device's wifi automatically, so you won't have to worry about typing in passwords. Overall, the HomeKit setup was very seamless. (As a side note, I did NOT need to connect this device to a HomePod, AppleTV, or iPad. The instructions reference those devices, but setting up the new opener to the wifi completely bypassed needing any of those devices.) EASE OF USE: 9/10. The new system is very easy to use. I only had one time in the beginning that it didn't open the garage after I requested it to, but I haven't had that problem since. Plus, I can open my HomeKit app and simply tap my garage opener to open the garage if I'm already on my phone. I haven't tested the arriving/leaving home automations yet, but I will definitely be putting it through the courses soon. PRICE VS VALUE: 10/10. At the time of writing, I bought this device on sale for $39.49. For the quick delivery by Amazon, the ease of install, and the ease of HomeKit setup & use, this is definitely worth the price paid and I would highly recommend it. LAST-MINUTE RECOMMENDATION: I recommend disabling notifications from the manufacturers app so you don't receive double notifications (manufacturer and Apple) every time the garage is opened and closed. The HomeKit notifications are more than enough and you'll likely be getting notifications from other devices in HomeKit anyways, so the manufacturers app is unnecessary after install. It's up to you, though. You can choose to receive notifications from either one based on your preferences. Overall, I'm very impressed with this device. Time will tell how it holds up, but so far I'm optimistic that this will be a long-lasting addition to my smart house. ... show more

  • Meross HK MSG100
Style: MSG100HK
I bought 2 of these openers because I have a wall separating both garages. The first garage install went smoothly, paired the needed accessory RGR910, opener MSG100HK to Apple Home Kit & Meross App. Installing the hardware was easy also. Ran into trouble installing the 2nd opener, it kept saying there is an Obstruction so it will not open or close with Siri or Meross App. I exchanged the opener, installed the replacement still same Error Message Obstruction. I bought a WIFI extender to increase the signal from 73% to 100% in the 2nd garage still no luck. Contacted Meross went through their troubleshooting steps still no luck. Finally narrowed it down to the Accessory RGR910, got a replacement, paired it with my Chamberlain opener but still no luck, same error message Obstruction. I paired the 1st garage RGR910 accessory with the #1 button, 2nd garage was paired with the #2 button. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM, because there is a solid wall separating both garages, I needed to use the number 1 button to pair the RGR910 accessory for my 2nd garage too. The Meross opener thinks it's a different garage so it didn't matter if I used the number one button on the RGR100 accessory for my 2nd garage. After that change, it works perfectly with Apple Home Kit and the Meross App. Now I hope it'll work for a long time as troubleshooting this was as painful as pulling a teeth. My situation is unique as I have a wall separating the garages so, can't really blame Meross, just happy that I was able to solve this problem. UPDATE Meross just emailed me and said you only can use the # 1 button on the RGR910 Accessory because that is the only button the wiring is soldered to. They should have that information on their instruction, would have saved me all the frustration and time trouble shooting the devices. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Apple HomeKit version, hands down
Style: MSG100HK
I purchased two of the Meross devices about a month ago. They were for my “already smart” MyQ garage door and my electric sling gate opener. The MyQ devices do not work with gate openers, without some serious modifications…and the sensor uses batteries. I also wanted one app platform for adding guest users when we have house sitters, dog sitters, etc. On top of that, the MyQ app crashes often and is unreliable, preventing me from using it when it doesn’t see my device online. . I originally purchased the non-HomeKit version. What I didn’t know was that the Meross app has no guest user access. Their website even addresses this and says “sharing is allowed by simply logging into the same account on all phones”. Since I did not want to give visitors my username and password, I returned that version immediately. I have an Apple TV, an iPhone, iPad, etc, so I did some poking around in the HomeKit app (which I never used before) and found that sharing was super simple. I have a very strong Wi-Fi mesh system that extends to my gate opener. The only slight issue I had was that the gate opener device would toggle between 60’ish and 80’ish percent Wi-Fi signal. When lower, it would state that the device may not be stable, which is what I was trying to avoid. So to fix this, I added a third mesh node inside the gate opener control box and connected it to my network. The Meross app showed 100 percent, of course, but the extender also showed 95 percent AND gave me a larger mesh area that gives me Wi-Fi out into my yard with a hidden network name. I installed the two devices in their respective locations and added them to the Meross app, while also scanning the QR codes into the HomeKit app. I already had magnetic reed switch sensors on both openers, from a previous system that gave open/ close notifications, so install was a breeze. Once installed and connected, I made the admin settings in the Meross app. Note, if using this for a gate opener set the opening time for 25 seconds. If this is not done, the Apple HomeKit app will show “obstruction” on every open/ close of the device. After the Meross app settings were completed I opened the HomeKit app, added my wife as an admin user, just to test the sharing aspect. The app sent her a request and she was quickly in. She had access to all devices that were added to the app and could control the gate and garage. This method will allow us to pack up, head to the beach for the weekend and text the neighbor that we’ve added them as guests to the HomeKit app. No more giving them the opener codes or a physical opener. The devices work perfectly and in this short time I’ve had zero issues. I look forward to their continued operation and I appreciate the ease of setup and app notifications for open/ close. I also like the ability to set my gate opener to close after one minute but not close my garage until a specific time…if I forget. Very good device and highly recommended. ... show more
