  • Superior waffles if you do the work
This is a the ultimate way to make old fashioned waffles. Not for people who want a simple way to cook decent waffles in the fastest way. But if you’re willing to go the extra mile you’ll be rewarded. No Teflon or other compounds involved. Great crisp and flavorful waffles cooked in cast iron is the superior ways to go. The iron is heave and retains heat well, but is a bit heavy to handle. I slide it off center and lean weight on the grate when I flip it. You need to flip once for each waffles to maintain even ten on both sides. I use gas to cook and it works very well. I use 80 grams of batter to get a perfect waffle. Cooking on medium 3 min works with my 18,000 BTU burner. If you’re looking for the best possible end product, then stay away from non-stick and get this iron. After 5 uses it will be non stick anyway. Never use soap. Butter liberally the first few waffles the first couple of times you use it. Enjoy. ... show more

  • Skeppshult - A waffle iron that doesn't leave teflon flakes in your food...
First the ugly. The packaging was LOUSY! The product was placed in an Amazon box with no packaging material whatsoever. When I received it, the box was broken, the handle was protruding from its side and it was slightly bent. I don’t know if any instructions came with the cooker. The only reason I accepted the package is because I was able to straighten the handle. Frankly, I don’t know why USPS accepted it in the first place. Zero points on shipping!! I’m not a big fan of the thin handles. Other than that, I think the waffle iron is very well constructed. The handles are long enough to keep my hands from the flames, they stay reasonably cool during use and they make it easy to flip the waffle when cooking. I still wish they were thicker though. The surfaces that meet the flames are machined flat, enabling one to use the iron on gas or an electric stove tops. The machining on these surfaces also causes the heat to be evenly dispersed, and the waffles come out golden brown all over. The pre-seasoning is nice; I was able to use the iron right away and got no sticking. I got this cast iron cooker so that I will never have to worry about getting Teflon chips in my food again. If you switch to cast iron though, I should point out the obvious. As with all cast iron products, if you get them wet, ie. wash them, they will rust unless you dry them and put a thin coating of oil on them immediately. Bottom line: I’m happy with this the Skeppshult waffle maker and I would recommend it to anyone. It works smoothly, cooks well and it’s compact and easy to store. Yes, it’s expensive, but you get what you pay for. I gave it 4 stars because of the thin handles. …Oh yeah; the hearts are cute too! 10/19/2019 I would be remiss if I didn't revisit this review... I have used this Skeppshult waffle maker a LOT since I bought it and it has been great! I raised my rating to 5 stars because the thin handles are actually not bad at all once you get used to them. I do have a recommendation for using it though. When you cook, flip it every 30 seconds. This ensures an even cooking temperature on both sides. ... show more

  • The waffle iron I've been searching for
I put some extra oil on it and heated that up for good measure, but it did come preseason. It doesnt stick. After the 1st sacrificial waffle, they were all lovely and it cooked evenly. Everyones stove is different, but here is what worked for me: 1/2 cup batter, medium heat, 1 minute each side , with sides preheated between each waffle. The waffles come right out with a regular fork and look lovely. Its quicker than an electric waffel maker, but I need to stand at the stove and use some muscles. The only thing I'll miss about the electric is sittling lazily at the table and making them. So, it's not as social. You have to be attentive for this thing and at the stove at all times- it's a quick production. But, it takes up less space, there is no teflon and it will likely last longer than me. Its engineered well - It stands open without closing or wabbeling. Its heavy. I could fool myself and say I'd use it for camping or power outages- but I'd rather stick to something simple in both of those instances like fruit and cheese or bagels. I'm into convenience camping these days and leave the gourmet cooking for home. It makes a thin waffle, which we like better - but be warned on this. Belgian waffle lovers need to keep searching. The youngsters enjoyed the shape and the leftovers froze just fine. Please do yourself a favor - if your going to go to the trouble to make waffles with this thing, spend the extra 10 to 15 minutes the night before to mix up a big batch of yeasted waffle batter that needs to sit in the fridge overnight. It's so worth it. King Aurthor has a good recipe on their site as does Cooks Illustrated, the difference being that King Author recipes are free. Now, to collect our other waffle irons - and we have a few- and put them in the donation pile for family, friends and finally the thrift store. For us, this is it. We might keep the chintzy, cheap Mickey mouse one just because it's so great with boxed brownie mix in it. grin. But for most purposes, this is it. ... show more

  • There's a learning curve... But we felt is was worth the effort.
This iron -- once you get the hang of it -- makes lovely, crisp waffles that are neither thin nor thick. Old fashioned, I would say. They are small for the modern American appetite. The first waffle we made stuck so horribly that we thought we were going to have to throw the waffle iron away! After cleaning and reheating the iron, we used A LOT of canola oil for the second waffle attempt, and it barely stuck. By the 8th waffle, we were able to get golden, crisp waffles that released easily from the iron. We used medium heat on a gas burner and a considerable amount of oil between waffles. The leftover waffles kept well and tasted delicious reheated in the toaster oven. We used the basic recipe from the New York Times Cooking site that called for plain Greek yogurt. Yum! ... show more
