    • Impressed to say the least!
Very impressed with these little 8's. I bought 2 to put into a 2000 Toyota Tundra Access cab in the under seat box. I had to modify the box to get the subs to fit and the sound was not too impressive at all. The box air volume was too small for the sub to move and they bottomed out frequently. I have since sold the Tundra and moved these bad boys into my 1984 Toyota LandCruiser FJ60. They are now in a Ground Shaker, box from another website, ported dual 8 box. Once again I had to modify the box to get the subs to fit, no prefab box will fit these babies that I can see. Anyhow after getting everything in wired in parallel down to 1 ohm, I am pushing 1200w rms through a class d mono amp. Now they SLAM, they surely are not as tight as the sealed box, but no more bottoming out. They sound good at low or high volume and do stress a little when pushed too hard, but so far everyone who has heard them in this setup has been amazed that they are only 8's. I don't want to sound like a raver or a fanboy, there are still some issues. The extension is not as low as I would like and I think they should have more excursion than they do. However overall, seeing as I rarely kick my system into overdrive, these sub provide very nice smooth bass and punch with the kick drums of Slipknot. For the price you can't go wrong. A custom built box might be worth it but I am not going to complain about my sound! Very much a Skar buyer now! ... show more

    • Not much of a subwoofer, more like woofer

What can I say, I had an 8” kicker with 300rms sounding far better than this thing. Also instructions do not say but youre supposed to break in the coils for like a week at low power. It makes a bit more bass than the 6.5” rear Skar 150rms speakers. I checked woofer wiring and got 2.2 ohm, set the gain to 29.0V and still sounds like shit. Amp is rated up to 420rms @ 2 ohm.... Going for a 12” kicker. Update, turns out Skar website specs show that this subwoofer operates 55-500 Hz... 55 is not a sub, most deep notes from 90% of music I listen to simply do not appear. I must admit they punch hard when I listen to 80s electronic music that has very short punchy drumlike bass. Overall a good speaker just not a subwoofer, I think this paired with a mild 12”-10” that can cover 25-55Hz range would be a great combo. ... show more

I had never heard of Skar until recently and after watching some videos and reading some reviews, I decided to try out this VD-8 D4 sub because my application was a very limited space and I wanted something that could handle some decent power while looking cool. I am not disappointed! I have a 2008 Ford Ranger single cab so that means I have about 5" of space behind the seats and center console to put in a box. I made a simple 4x12x20 box to put this thing in and I am very happy with the sound! I read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of videos that talk about break in period so I hooked it up to my amp and let it play in free air at low volume for about 3 days before I even put it in the box. At first I wasn't impressed with the sound but after some tweaking and tuning of my amp and head unit and some more breaking in, I was very happy with the sound quality. I'm only using a 600 watt max (300 watt RMS) 4 channel amp so the rear 2 channels are only sending about 75 watts per channel to each coil for a total of 150 watts max. And it already sounds good to me. I know this thing has low sensitivity and is power hungry and it's supposed to handle 400+ watts! I can't wait to order a new Skar amp and another one of these so I can wire them down together to 1 ohm and 800 watts and see what kind of sound I get. Very happy! I will be buying more stuff from Skar. So it's an 8" woofer, people. You aren't going to get ground pounding, earth shattering bass out of these things. I bought 2 refurbished subs. They look new. I used a box I had for different 8's (.5 cubes). They sounded like trash, so I moved them to a box with 2.0 cubic inches and ported to around 36hz. This setup made the subs come alive. (Night and day difference) They hit and the bass sounds really good. Not a good as my DB Drive 8s, but for the price point you are getting a great deal. I am building a box to spec and will update once finished. Impressed with subs! Also know if using a existing box the holes will need to be modified slightly to get them to mount flush. ... show more

Looks good, but sounds even better. Very punchy and gets much louder then I thought it would be. Don't let its 8inch size fool you, it's good plenty of thump to go around. I hooked it up to my Taramps TS 400x4 and it sounds great!

Well, I received this sub yesterday. After reading the reviews, and inspecting the product, and giving it a test in the car, I am fairly impressed. I do not think you can find a better product for the $! I bought the 8" version. I think I am going to like it. If you have a "prefab box" be prepared for some additional work as the sub is not going to fit. I had to widen the hole with a drill to get the sub into my box properly. I will be updating this review after I have had more time to evaluate this sub. So far so good. Sounds good so far. I have a Soundstream Rubicon RUB 1.1000D. Monoblock driving it. Well made and durable I chose this for two reasons: 1. The RMS power is almost twice that of other shallow subs including larger ones. 2. The mounting depth is nothing and you are getting a lot of low end for the $ without taking up a lot of space. So, if you are sitting on the fence on this don't.
