  • Viable Eotech alternative
I was looking for an alternative to Eotech. My primary use case is home defense and the range, though I prefer versatile products, of course. In general, I like the wider field of view that Eotechs offer, and I like their circle+dot reticle for shorter distances. What I most don't like is the short Eotech battery life. If you are on offense, then you have time to turn the optic on (and someone else is likely paying for the batteries), but for home defense you are inherently reactive -- Eotech battery life is short enough that you really can't just leave them turned on and ready for use, and the delay required to boot up an optic which is powered down in a reactive self defense situation takes time which you likely don't have. In January 2026, I've heard that Eotech is (finally) supposed to introduce a model with 'shake-awake', which might improve this calculus for reactive home defense with respect to battery life, but at the time of purchase this feature still does not exist. The 8T addresses the battery problems of Eotechs. Battery life is long, plus it has shake-awake for even longer standby times. And, the 8T has a similar reticle to the Eotechs. 8T construction looks similarly/sufficiently robust for most civilian use cases, although I have no way to physically test this. Eotechs do have a longer track record (which is generally quite good, though not spotless). Compared to my Eotech, the overall, unobstructed field of view of the 8T offers perhaps 10% less. (I don't have a good way to measure this, I'm just looking through both, side-by-side.) All else equal, I would rather be looking through an Eotech window. However, looking through the 8T is nothing like the tunnel vision you get with many red dots where the eye box is small enough that unless your eye is sufficiently lined up with the optic, and you have a strong cheek weld to anchor your head in the right place, you really don't have the ability to line up a shot. Yes, good technique says you're always supposed to hold that correct body position, but in reality that's not always possible, especially with smaller PDWs that don't have a stock which facilitates optimal technique. Ever more field of view is always better, but the 8T is close enough to Eotech that to my eyes the 8T is worth considering and in a similar category as Eotech. Parallax on the 8T is rather larger than Sig's marketing materials would lead you to expect (go figure). Again, I have no easy way to measure it, but based on the center dot being 2 MOA, I'd estimate that there's perhaps 5 MOA of parallax from one extreme edge to the other (i.e. 2/5 MOA toward the Left/Top + 2.5 MOA toward the Right/Bottom). On the one hand, 5 MOA sounds like a lot, but by the time you're aiming from the extreme edges the target is probably so close/large that it occupies the entire window, anyway. (Red dots aren't LVPOs.) For precise aiming, you're not lining up from the edge of the window, anyway, so the practical accuracy is better than this 5 MOA figure would suggest during the times when it would actually matter. However, the existence of parallax on the 8T does make me further appreciate its absence on the Eotech. I didn't buy the magnifier originally, but now I'm curious and I've ordered it. Holographic technology is supposed to be better than red dots under magnification, but the AMR technology is a clever workaround to this shortcoming which now looks interesting. I have no personal experience with magnified red dots, but magnifying the Eotech adds fun at the range, even if it's not all that useful for me inside my home as a practical matter. Unmagnified, the reticle on the 8T is more crisp, but I've never felt that the Eotech reticle was insufficiently clear for its intended use. I prefer the Eotech's circle with 2 dots to the 8T's circle with 3 dots (less clutter > more precise holdovers, when it comes to a shorter range optic), but both work well enough. The 8T window has a slight blue tint to it which Eotech doesn't have. I don't have any experience with night vision to know whether this tint makes a difference, but it doesn't bother me under practical conditions for my use case. I have no affiliation with either manufacturer. I'd buy the 8T again, for my use case. It's almost is good as Eotech is at being an Eotech, without the drawbacks. ... show more
