A light, neat, easy to set up mic that does what it says in terms of bringing a warm, directional audio recording to my Sony A7Sii and iPhone 17 Pro. Indoors, the directional mic reduces tinny roomy echo for both the camera and the phone, but I haven't used it outdoors yet. 3 features I particularly like. 1) The auto On feature is really useful in case you forget to turn it on, and the iPhone 17 Pro automatically selects the mic as the audio input once connected, so I didn't have to go into Settings to override the phone's mic. 2) I like the cable connection in preference to messing around with yet another Bluetooth pairing that might drop signal. 3) The package that includes the mini pod for the iPhone is a great bit of solid, easy to set up kit that doubles as a mini tripod for my camera. 3 small criticisms. 1) The mic's output mini jack doesn't tighten without a bit of pressing, implying that mine might be a little out of line internally? 2) Doesn't come supplied with a minijack-to-USBC input for the phone, so I had to buy an adapter and hope it worked (an Apple one did). 3) The gain has to be switched to high for the iPhone for a loud enough recording that doesn't hiss (my camera seems fine with normal gain). An easy switch to do, but one more thing to remember before you record on the phone, because it doesn't have audio level meters to show you that the input signal is low. Overall looks like good value for money if it lasts. I'm a professional who uses Senneheiser gun mics for TV shows, and the pro level Sennheisers are the go-to for reliable run and gun filming. I hope this domestic version lives up to their good name. ... show more

I usually use off-camera mic for my videos, mostly with the Zoom H1N tucked someplace or with a lav mic piped into it or the camera, but I figured it was time to look for an on-camera shotgun. After watching too many mic comparison videos on YouTube, I was going to get a Rode VideoMic NTG, but then I stumbled across this one - Sennheiser's MKE 400: The circuitry and microphone suspension have been ingeniously refactored to allow for the same length of interference tube and microphone isolation as the Rode, but in a more pocketable form factor with similar sound quality. I really appreciate the automatic power management that handles turning it on and off with the camera without consuming any power in standby. The settings seem pretty much idiot-proof, and the whole package seems pretty well-built, unobtrusive and low-profile. I'm looking forward to testing it some more tomorrow, but so far, it seems to pick up a lot less camera and operator noise than the onboard microphones. Wish it had Rode's safety track feature, but otherwise, great little device. Update: Two years on, this was a great investment. ... show more

I originally bought this for video but have ended up using it for birding via bird call recognition apps since the kit with the tripod is so easy to use. I have tried quite a few exterior mics with my phone and this works by far the best to capture distant bird sounds, which is to be expected since it's the most expensive I've tried. My kids love using it as well and are excited whenever a bird pops up on the app (Merlin) that they hear in real-life. My wife, on the other hand, tries not to associate with me when I'm kitted up with this tripod/mic and my birding camera/lens and harness. Overall, I would definitely recommend to anyone who may be looking for a legitimate mic to use for birding apps that can also be used for video creation, or vice versa. ... show more

The mic is fantastic— lower the internal mic level as much as possible and put on the +20dB gain (typically better gain in the mic than the pre-amp in the body). The microphone is great, the dead cat is almost not needed because the housing has its own wind mitigation plus internal vibration mount. It’s very compact, auto on-off with the camera, and has a low pass filter option great quality! Add in the best iPhone mount I’ve seen and a Manfrotto small tripod becomes quite good for panning, vlogging, and motion reduction. I bought this mic looking for something clean and directional that I can use while recording videos. Little did I know how much self-noise this mic makes. At the max gain setting (where you will most likely use it) it has 40db of self noise. This is very noticeable in a quiet to medium quiet room. That is way too loud for a mic at this price point. Other complaints: - The mic has a plastic hot shoe mount instead of metal. Big no-no as it never sets in completed compared to metal mounts and will wear over time. - the noise cover looks nice but doesn’t work as well as you would expect Please note: If your camera allows you to adjust the preamp of your microphone (Sony A7) this maybe a little worse for you. However, I still think you’ll not be happy with the noise floor and should look somewhere else. ... show more
