I use this kit pretty often, and drive a minimum of 40 miles one way on the highway with it. The kayak doesn't budge. Because the pads strap to the roof of the car, that makes it much easier to get your kayak up there so they are not sliding around on you. The cam straps are nice quality, they hold the kayak well. I don't use the little bars that are supposed to go under the hood, instead I tied on some metal hooks to connect the bow and stern lines directly to the chassis, but upon inspection I'm confident they work just fine. The ropes it comes with are decent quality, I can tie a trucker's hitch in it easily and the rope does not seem like it has low breaking strength or line memory. When I'm done, everything goes back into the bag it came with, which I keep in the trunk. I would definitely trust these for a long road trip. A couple of notes based on some of the other reviews I read. Yes, if you leave these on all the time they will fade in the sun, just like literally anything else will. You're not supposed to leave them on 24/7, so take them off when you're not using it. And because these are straps wrapping around the roof of your car and pass through your door frame, they are going to compress the door gaskets and let rain water drip into the car if you drive with them in the rain. So use common sense and don't leave these on all the time, and don't act surprised and leave a bad review when you drive with them in a rain storm. ... show more

    • The rubber feet keep falling off.

I purchased this to make sure that I could drive my vehicle back with added gifts after Christmas vacation. It served its purpose well. I still take this on road trips occasionally since my car doesn't have roof bars attached, but our van does. They are really easy to install, and seem like they would fit just about any car, but the feet keep falling off. If you don't keep track of them the bars become useless because you will be scratching your roof. The major issue with this is that the straps are run through your car, so if you have a low roof/ceiling, the straps could be annoying.     • Terrible instructions, but product does its job.

This product came with wildly insufficient instructions, that didn't even mention how to use the screws and nuts that came with it to attach the feet to the bars. There is no way you could get the product working solely by following their instructions. That said, if you're relatively handy, have a screwdriver and either pliers or the right size wrench, you can put these together without too much difficulty despite the instructions. Note that the tools will only be required the first time — after that, you can remove it from your roof and reattach without any tools, and in just a couple minutes. Once assembled and attached, the product is sturdy and stable. It does its job well, and I didn't see any comparable alternatives when I was searching. The rubber bits on the ratchet part make it easy and comfortable to use. As other reviewers have said, make sure to twist the straps on their way down from the roof, which also isn't mentioned in the instructions. If you don't, it will still do its job, but it will make a horrendous buzzing noise as you approach highway speeds. If you're planning to use it like we did, to attach a kayak to the top of the car via additional ratchet straps but without a true kayak rack, we recommend also picking up a couple pool noodles to soften the rods against the boat, and use other ropes to securely tie the front and back of the boat to the rails (or to hitches on front and back of your car, if you have them.) ... show more

    • Univeral Car Rack Works Great. Is Great, Unless You're Tall

We needed a top of car rack, fast! We purchased the rack to use on our Toyota Corolla. This rack, delivered a day late, was fairly easy to install. Just read all the directions first. We got the rack bolted together, then had to take it apart to add the strap loops. We used the rack to move a heavy iron quilting frame and it worked beautifully. I would highly recommend the rack. The only problem was the straps that run inside the car. My husband is 5'10 and he could feel the strap on the top of his head and it bothered him. I'm 5'4" and they were a few inches above my head. But, in a pinch, this is a great rack. We will keep it in the trunk because you never know when you have to haul something home. ... show more

CLEARLY received a used item that was not inspected before it was sent out. I received 3/4 rubber pads and 0/2 belts. Unusable. Come on now. If I get a prompt replacement I will change this review. EDIT: I needed a functional roof rack no more than 4 days after this, and the seller either could or would not send a replacement with any sort of priority shipping. First i tried to rig it with the parts that did come, using some belts my friend had lying around. Even the bar with two rubber feet felt unstable, the plastic pieces were also very brittle and cheaply made. I wouldn't trust it to hold a kayak even WITH all of the hardware, and we needed it to hold two. So i had to go drop it off at UPS for a refund, which i received a few days later through amazon. I ordered this item specifically for the convenience, otherwise i would've just gone to autozone in the first place. Glad i got a refund but that's kind of the bare minimum in my opinion, and somebody's carelessness wasted a bunch of time for me. Still 1 star. ... show more
