I purchased this February 26th. It died the evening of April 14th…just after the return window, of course. As soon as I opened the package upon arrival I had a feeling this thing was cheap plastic crap. It felt flimsy and light. The case easily warped when I grasped it. Then I plugged it in and started transferring some files and set it up for Time Machine backups and I noticed that the speed was pretty slow, too, even over Thunderbolt3. I just did not trust this drive for anything more than a redundant backup. It went nowhere; never travelled with me. It just sat on the desk being a backup for my current—but full—backup drive. Then this evening I planned on reviewing some tax documents I had saved on it and it wouldn’t even mount. Just a popup telling me the drive was unable to be located. And every few seconds a screeching whine shot out of it that I can only assume was head crash. What a complete waste of $90. I mean, I never intended this thing to store anything truly important or to be my only backup, but really… seven weeks?! And it didn’t even move from the desk?! For crying out loud, you’d think I was using the thing for batting practice with how catastrophically it had failed. Possibly a one-in-a-million dud. Many other reviewers love this drive; not me. This experience has certainly tilted me to strongly consider an SSD at this point for nothing more than the potential of better reliability, because that’s kinda the most important attribute in a backup drive. ... show more

    • For those who encounter some issues

Detach the drive before you let computer go into sleep or hibernate, otherwise after wake up the encryption software will prevent access, system might not be able to identify the hardware thus telling you that the drive needs check and repair, and you can't safely remove

I love this external harddrive, been using it for a while and have not had a complaint. Tech support was actually very helpful when I needed an answer. Would definitely buy again. **update** This is an update. For the past 2 months it keeps crashing. I have to unplug and plug it a few times in hope that it will start working again. I have used many hard drives. All of them had no problems. This one gave me twice in 3 weeks of use "error" and "check disk and repair" messages. The backup software came with the drive does not work. When I tried to back up using ""folderrobo 102", the soft could not write onto this hard drive. I'm pretty sure the hard drive worked once I opened the package, but I wouldn't be able to tell you because within an hour, my computer was unable to read the drive, and all I heard was a beep coming from the hard drive — an indication that was something wrong with the hard drive. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with only a 256gb SSD. I've been able to manage thus far, until my job has transitioned into more media and editing. Using primarily Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator has made this external hard drive a necessity. I formatted it to Mac OS Extended (journaled) using DIsk Utility and have it set up as my scratch disk for my Adobe Cloud and it has been perfect for my needs. Easy and fast and it's quiet too. Small footprint makes it easy to throw in my bag and bring it with me. I'm very pleased! *One important thing to note that can be seen in the stock photos, but not gleaned from the title: the unit itself is NOT usb c...but rather they include a usb 2 to usb 3 adapter. At 2TB...I should be good to go for a very long time! ... show more

This application is dysfunctional. I had to delete the app from my computer to continue to use the product. I will us the product as a back up storage devise only. The "continuous backup" feature of this app is annoying and dysfunctional. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product.

    • Read/write rates are terrible, but...

The read/write rates are really bad. Even after taking some advice from other to format the drive. It does great for the first minute of transferring files, but after that it sinks down to 20mb/s or less. and it never improves after that. I recently bought the amazon basics USB Type C to Micro B cable it stays fairly consistent above 90 mb/s throughout the transfer. Most of the time being above 120 mb/s. The only way I recommend this drive is if you buy the Amazon Basics cable with it. ... show more
