  • Entry level engraver
The SCULPFUN C1 Mini Laser Engraver is my first laser engraver. This model is meant for engraving. It is not recommended for cutting. It is small, occupying minimal space. It would be easy to travel with. It was simple to install. It is great for smaller-sized projects. The maximum size 150 mm x 130 mm/5.9” x 5.1”. It uses LightBurn (additional purchase/free for 30-day trial) and LaserGRBL (free) software. It supports the following file formats: JPG, PNG, PDF, BMP, GIF, SVG, AI, DXF, etc. The user manual contains links to download the software. It can be used on over 100 materials, including wood, anodized surfaces, leather, slate, acrylic, kraft paper, laser material, color cardstock, and a leaf. It comes with the following: a user manual, C1 Body, Laser Head, Metal Protective Plate, Acrylic Focusing Sheet, power adapter, repair tools, data cable, protective glasses, 2 metal business cards, kraft paper, plywood, and cleaning cloth. The machine itself is well-made and simple to use. I like that it does not take up much space. You need to consider ventilation when/where you are using it. This is a good entry-level engraver. It is not intimidating. ... show more

  • Awesome introductory laser engraver/cutter or second laser
I have been playing with lasers for years and while we've seen a race to power by optically combining LED lasers into monsters of up to 72Watts of optical power, doing so results in a less focused, less sharp cutting spot, which is why we're seeing a return to the use of lowly 3 or 5W optical power simple single lasers like this one: low cost, sharp spot. This engraver comes mostly assembled. If you plan on cutting anything (paper, card stock, 3mm basswood...) you should invest in a small honeycomb laser bed. The biggest limitation of this low cost unit is the lack of air assist, which is pretty much required for neater jobs; but it's really amazing how much fun you get for this low price. I was delighted to find out the engraver was equipped with origin limit switches. For best results you will want to get a copy of the awesome LightBurn (sixty bucks). There are versions available for Mac, Windows and Linux and the license is valid forever and gets you free updates for a year. One of the best uses I would recommend for this cool little machine is cardmaking. Properly adjusted, it will do an amazing job at cutting cardstock. If you're used to Silhouette or Cricut, you won't believe how quickly and efficiently it cuts the most intricate designs, and you don't have to deal with trying to pry a delicate design off a sticky mat getting it all curled up in the process (or worse, torn up). Now, since this is probably going to be picked up by beginners... DO NOT - Use on random materials. Many materials are not safe to cut or engrave with a laser and can release extremely toxic gases. - Use in the presence of children or pets. - Use unattended. Jobs can take a while (especially image/engraving jobs). Be patient. DO - Use eye protection. This is not a toy and it can cause permanent eye damage or fires. - Get LightBurn and a honeycomb bed - Use outdoors or inside an enclosure with an extractor - Learn the basics (how to focus the laser, how to determine optimal speed and intensity for a given material) before you get started There are tons of video resources, and the LightBurn web site has an incredible amount of extremely well made training documentation. Make good use of it. An awesome and fun tool, and unlike most laser engravers it takes up very little space but still delivers. Very highly recommended for "dabblers" who want to get their feet wet with laser cutting and engraving. ... show more

  • A very capable little laser!
Item reviewed: SCULPFUN C1 Mini Laser Engraver, 3W Portable Laser Engraving Machine with 0.04mm Ultra Fine Spot Date reviewed: June 23, 2025 This is the first laser engraver I've ever had. Setup was pretty easy - just followed the included directions. There is a video you can find on YT from Sculpfun which is a little more helpful. Downloaded and installed LightBurn for my computer. And that's where the instructions end. Like many modern electronics for hobbyists, you're kinda on your own after that. There are a few pieces of included materials, and I do mean a FEW (one piece of cardstock, two plastic business cards, one small piece of basswood, and a metal plate meant to serve as your surface). I have a friend who owns and operates laser engravers and cutters, and he helped me some. Being that I have a craft background and use a cutting machine (Starcraft Solo), I was able to perform some basic tests quickly. So since most of my struggles came from the software and not the machine, I'll just keep my review to the machine itself. It's very small and lightweight. Setup was really easy. LightBurn did not recognize the device, so you'll have to input it manually. There's a YT video for that, too. I was able to engrave a few things, but that's where the fun stopped. You will 100% need an exhaust system for this device, or use it outside or in garage. I had hoped that it being small and only 3W meant the fumes/smells would be minimal. Um, nope. My entire basement smelled of burning material within minutes. So again, USE THIS OUTSIDE OR WITH PROPER EXHAUST. I was impressed that something this small was so functional. The engraving area (max it can handle) is about 6" wide by 5" tall. I tested metal, leather, the plastic card and an acrylic keychain. All worked except the keychain. I was flying blind since I had NO idea what settings to use for each one. The included instructions only cover setup of the machine. After that, you're on your own! If you're new to lasers, this is a good entry point. It doesn't take up much space and can engraver a wide variety of materials. Build quality seemed to be above average. Look forward to learning more! ... show more
