I'm not much for Gardner and I rarely put down product on my lawns or garden, but at least every other year I find that I have to get some weed and feed to keep my grass 'grassy' otherwise the weeds and clover take over. Had one like this that was a hand crank, but when I went to put some more weed and feed then I could not find it in my shed. Amazon had a good price on this one that is battery operated so decided to take a chance as it wasn't expensive. It works fantastic. Not only does it disperse the product evenly, it has a switch on one side where you can block the product to go out only on a 90° angle so that you can walk along the sidewalk and not waste your weed and feed on cement. So much more comfortable and fast than having to hand crank with more even product distribution. Ironically, after I put all of the product in with this new battery operated spreader and rearranging some things in my shed I came across my old wonky hand crank spreader. Ended up giving that one to Goodwill since this new battery operated one works so much better. ... show more

I just received this spreader so can’t speak to how it holds up. Also, I need to find out how to clean it better. But I did use it once and was very pleasantly surprised by how much easier it was than the spreader I’ve been using, which is like a pitcher that has different size holes in the lid. I’m almost glad that pitcher turned out to be such a pain because I may not have found this spreader, otherwise. So much faster and spreads more evenly. I went out expecting to get one area done and, in less time than I expected for just that, I got three large areas done. Spreading Preen and, so far, it’s worked just great! Will update if problems spring up. Senior user here and I’m wowed with this product, so far. UPDATE: I changed it to a 4-star rating only because when what you’re spreading gets low you have to shake it a bit to get the last bit out. And when you do, it shakes out a bit too much at once. Seems if the floor of the spreader sloped more toward the exit that could be solved. Anyway, I still like it a lot and, if they correct this design flaw, I’d buy another one. ... show more

    • Good, lightweight and affordable option for one-handed use

So far, this spreader has worked well for grass and other small seed. The dial is easy to use and I didn't experience any clogging. (Not sure how it would work for salt/melt but I purchased it for seed and/or granular fertilizer). I won't use it that much, just an occasional home user with a small yard, but it has worked well so far. The battery-operated nature is far superior to "hand crank" spreaders as it does not require both hands. One subtle benefit is that one can hold it in either hand while spreading, not generally possible with most crank spreaders. I am not sure how long the batteries would last but it worked fine for my needs. It has the "edge guard" feature, a simple lever which works to block seed from spreading out to the left side (meaning you need to walk clockwise around the perimeter of your lawn). One note on the batteries: It seems to take 3 AA batteries, which seemed not to be indicated in any of the specs or listings on Amazon or even on the Scotts website. (This would seem a nice thing to include). I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find the batteries included and already installed in the product (with one of those "pull here" paper isolator things to prevent accidental turning on while shipping. You do have to jiggle it back and forth a bit as the seed begins to deplete so that the remainder falls into the feed hole (perhaps a more "conical" design wouldn't need to do this, although that would presumably limit the capacity of the hopper or make the device unwieldy), but that's minor and not unheard of with these types of devices. The device comes almost ready to use (need to remove the battery isolator, mentioned above), with a promotional sticker applied to one side. I foolishly ripped this off (thinking it was just one of those glossy sales stickers) before noting it had the suggested dial settings for different types of seed/fertilizer/melt. So now I will have to glue it back on or otherwise not lose it so that the next time i use it I can know what the settings should be. (They also have this info posted on the Scotts website, I later found out). The price point was good (I guess it's a few dollars more than a crank spreader) but the ease of use makes it more than worth it. I love this. I have a long driveway, but didn't want to go all in on a walk behind spreader because it seemed like overkill and the other hand spreaders require you to either shake your arm back and forth or use both hands and manually crank them. this one can be used one handed and I can just hold it by my side and it just does its job nice and evenly. My only issue is that sometimes when I release the trigger it doesn't stop so I just have to press and release it again and it stops. Overall though it's a minor bug and easy to get around. So far I have only used it for ice melt and it works great. I can't wait to try it this spring on my lawn. UPDATE I am happy to report that this spreader works just as well on grass seed. It was a breeze to spread seed in my backyard and did a nice even job! ... show more
