Good Foldable bike And update after a few hundred miles

So I just finished my commute on the Schwinn folding bike, and I can say it wasn’t too bad. I normally commute on a Retrospec Beaumont 7 speed, but decided to invest in a foldable bicycle for when I travel, or if I ever make a quick trip downtown. So there’s kind of two parts to my review; my thoughts on the Schwinn Loop, and how it stacks up as a daily commuter. So I’m no bike expert, but I have ridden a fair amount, work on my own bikes, and commute 10-15 miles daily (I’m a medical student and switch between clinic for outpatient and hospital for surgery). I used to commute on a big box mountain bike, but have recently upgraded to 200-400 dollar bicycles (which I would recommend to anyone putting more than 200-300 miles on their bike a year, or want a bike that lasts a long time). The old adage in biking goes, “cheap, durable, or lightweight.....pick two”. This tends to be a pretty good rule of thumb. The bike weighs 33 pounds which is more than other folding bikes, but it’s also one of the cheapest bikes in the folding bike world. The bike seems to handle pretty good and be a fun ride, but at this price point companies tend to have to take a couple shortcuts. The tires seem to be of a cheaper compound, which is fine in good weather, but don’t tend to grip as well in rain. I wish they would’ve put on a little bit more expensive softer compound tire that would grip better. I know comparative to other bikes it’s cheap, but I feel they could’ve made a better selection on the tires. I just did 10 miles in the morning and 10 miles after work, and the seat wasn’t my favorite, but you definitely ride a 10 mile each way commute with no problems. People also tend to have their own personal preferences on bike seats, so finding a seat to make everyone happy might be pretty hard. Schwinn went with a bike seat on the softer side with a hint of firmness. Really really soft seats tend to be good for a mile or two, but tend to fatigue and hurt your rear faster than a firmer seat. I think this seat is aimed at people making a 3-7 mile commute. If I rode this everyday, I might seriously start thinking of changing it out for a harder seat post to match my longer commutes. But again, I just rode 20 miles with no problem, and would have no problem doubling that distance with no issues. I like how the bike has a welded on rear rack, you could buy a nice pair of saddle bags and not have to worry about the weight snapping or bending your rear rack. The bikes factory setup was really well done. I was impressed that the derailleur, brakes, wheel alignment were perfect and didn’t need adjusting out of the box. While I got lucky, I would still recommend having a bike mechanic look over your bike before riding if you’re not familiar with brake adjustments or derailleurs. I probably unboxed my bike and had it ready to ride in 30 minutes. A quick chain lube and once over and I was ready to ride. While this bike isn’t going to ride like a 1000 dollar bike or be light as a feather, it’s a pretty good looking bicycle for the money which could be pretty dependable if taken care of properly. The rim brakes are easy to maintain, but switching out to a brand like koolstops will give you a much improved stopping power after the stock pads are worn out. So how does this foldable bike compare to other bikes?? Well, I’d still prefer a full size bike over the foldable. You feel the bumps a lot more on the 20 in tires than say a 700. The hearing on this is very favorable to climbing hills, you won’t find yourself wishing you had a lower gear most of the time. On the same note, your not going to be flying by anyone either. The trade off on a 7 speed for climbing easy is that downhill or on a bike path you might wish you had a higher gear or two. You could always change this out, but I think most people will go with the factory setup. Plus who really is going to invest money modifying a brand new Schwinn bike that’s perfectly fine to ride. There is a little bit of flex, but I didn’t really notice too much difference on my commute. The main issues between this and a regular hybrid are speed ( this bike is slower due to gearing, weight, smaller wheels, and flex), but I don’t think the average person will care they’re going a tad bit slower around town. The bike is actually kind of fun to ride around, but I’ll be sticking with my 700. Overall, I could see this being a great bike for someone who works in downtown or somewhere where leaving your bike locked outside might not be an option, or for someone with limited space for a bike in their house or apartment. For me, it serves its purpose well for a the ocasional short commute if I want a quick change up from my 700, to lend out to friends if they wanna bike the greenway bike trails (this bike can be adjusted to fit virtually and adult with its quick clamp seat post), and to take with me if I visit any other cities. If you don’t see an update, you can assume the bikes been going good since the date of this publication with no major issues. While I wasn’t blown away by the Schwinn, and still prefer my Retrospec, I think this could be a really fun commuter bike for someone and is overall a pretty good bike. Update 3/24/2020 So I’ve put a couple hundred miles on this, checked it on a flight, and think I can give a little better input. I changed the seat out to one from Retrospec I found on Amazon for ten bucks (scene in second picture). I was rotating at a clinic who wouldn’t let me bring a full size bike inside, but would let me bring a folding bike I could store in a corner of the office. So I’ve got close to a month commuting on this now. The only upgrades I’ve done is to add a Retrospec seat, and attach a plastic crate with zip ties and a towel underneath to keep it from scratching the paint. Like others have said, the stock saddle is just not comfortable for most people, and if it doesn’t work for you switch it out. I might recommend looking for a harder seat rather than super soft, as really soft seats tend to be more uncomfortable on anything more than a few miles. I find a semi-hard seat seams to be the best for commuting (5-20 miles each way). Second, I bought a plastic crate from Walmart for about 7 bucks, put a black towel underneath to cushion and keep it from scratching the paint. I have five bungee cords in the middle and two zip ties keeping it from sliding back (bungees keptvin on but didn’t prevent it from sliding off). This bike has really low gearing, and outside of commuting it’s become my grocery store bicycle because it’s steel frame is very rugged and it’s gearing let’s me pull a trailer with no problems. The smaller tires are able to withstand more abuse than a larger wheel would. I tried putting panniers on, but the rear triangle is a tad to small for most panniers ( my heels kept hitting the panniers). After a couple hundred miles, I’m pleasantly surprised by the Schwinn Loop. Change out the seat, and you’ll have a pretty rugged commuter than you can fold up in under a minute for the office. Do not fly without buying a hard shell suitcase. I ignorantly tried checking it with only the case it came with. I arrived at my location with a bent derailleur. If you want to fly with this, either see if you can bring it as carry on, or buy a hardshell suitcase that will fit its dimensions. In my opinion, the case it comes with is pretty useless for anything other than storage. Overall I think it’s still 4/5, but I would easily recommend this bike for anyone looking for a reliable and economical foldable commuter bicycle. Update 9/3/2020 I’ve probably got 500-600 miles on this now, and I’m changing my review to 5 stars. This has become my errand bike. I constantly load this bike up with 20-40 pounds extra on the back and it does more than fine. Is it the best folding bike? Of course not, but at its price point you can’t beat it. In fact, I’d say it does better than any other bicycle for the same price. Also, it’s a conversation starter. People ask me all the time about it, or give me compliments on it. People also seem to think it might be an electric bicycle. It’s really fun to ride. The 20 inch tires and short frame length make it really nimble and responsive. You’re going to have to fight off smiles while riding it. Shortly I’m going to have to service the hub and crank, as they’re needing more grease. The front brake noodle broke a while back, but the bike has taken a couple spills so I don’t fault the company for that. For $250 dollars on sale you’re getting a more than competent commuter and folding bike. You will not find a better folding bicycle at this price point. I was worried things might start breaking quickly like other cheap bicycles, but this bike has held up well to bring my errand bike. If you’re looking for a do everything bike to get you around and I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on this. Be ready to swap the seat out, and re-grease and service the hubs sooner than a 600-700 dollar folding bicycle. For reference I’m 180 pounds and the stopping power on the brakes are perfect. When the stock pads run out (I’m guessing around 1000-1500 miles) I’m going to replace them with kool stop pads. Also, the brake noodles hit on the frame a bit on the front, I swapped to a bending brake noodle and it completely solved that problem. Enjoy your bicycle, you’re getting a great bicycle.

Great little bike! Update after 1 year

I wanted to update my review, since I've now had my Loop for over a year. This is a fantastic, tough little bike. I live in Boston and was able to ride it through most of the winter. It has issues with slipping on ice which is a matter of physics and not the bike's fault. Over the last month it stopped shifting gears. I got a YouTube video showing how to fix it, but we didn't even need to go through the whole video - the cable had popped out of its housing and that was the whole problem. My fiance got it back where it was supposed to go, we did a little bit of tuning, and now its humming along like new. I didn't bother changing the saddle, as I was afraid a bigger saddle would affect the folding. At first, the saddle was murder, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I wouldn't go for a really long ride on it, but for short trips around it's perfect. I don't use the bag it came in and I wouldn't be able to carry it around in its bag as it's too heavy for me. However, it's perfect for folding up in my trunk. I can also bring it into my office and stick it under my desk if I need to. One issue I have is the rack. It's too think to hold most bike panniers or saddle bags. I found a good bag that sits on top and velcros to the rack, but I'd like a pannier that I could just pop on. Instead, I have to really lash my pannier to the bike, which is a pain. Original review I ordered this bike to get from my car to my office. I had to start parking further away, so what had been a 12 minute walk became a 20 minute walk. This bike, folded up, fits perfectly in the trunk of my teeny Scion. It takes up almost the whole trunk, but that hasn't been a problem. I've had the bike for about a week, and I've gotten VERY good at folding and unfolding - I can put it together or take it apart in about 10 seconds without rushing. The bike itself rides very nicely. The saddle is indeed uncomfortable, as people have mentioned, but if you replaced it with a bigger, more comfortable saddle then the bike wouldn't fold up as compactly. I might get a softer saddle for longer, leisurely bike rides, but for my quick ride from the car to the office it's perfectly fine. The gears change very smoothly. The bike feels extremely solid. If I wanted to keep it at my desk instead of outside at a bike rack, I easily could as the photo makes clear. I'm tempted to buy another one for my fiance and maybe my son if they want one!

i great little workhorse

i have had this little bike for about a year now and wanted to write a quick review. the construction is good on the bike and have only had one of the front reflectors break and one of the brake pads for the rear wheel shoot off when i was bombing down a hill. i would give it a 9/10 as far as a lower price model in the folding bike game but it is just good and not great. the bag that comes with it is way too small and it has been very difficult to find something that has some strength and padding for flying with the bike. i work on container ships so the primary reason i got this bike was so that when we are in port i will have something i can put in the shuttle van and in the back of a cab and still get some exercise in and a nice little bike ride. i have had to do lots of modifications to get the bike up to safe and efficient operation and wrote my review with the add-ons to maybe save you some time in the search. 1. woo wind portable air pump- this has been a life saver, often after travel and from use and different temperatures the PSI will dip down. this little air pump will keep you at a perfect PSI after about 4 min of pumping for both tires. holds a charge for about 2 months before needs recharge on USB-type C. for 30$ its a no-Brainier 2. little bell- for some reason this bike has no bell. people are now always on their phones when driving and walking on the sidewalk. i always hit the ding ding whenever i am near a car to try to not get my ass run over. i also blast annoying music like techno or Bob Marley on my JBL charge to be seen and heard better. 3. a helmet- duh 4. my Kryptonite lock. - i hang it around my neck and it is ready to go for a weapon when riding in case a bum/crackhead starts getting aggressive with you. and i have never had anyone mess with my rig when i use it because it is really beefy. 5. side saddle bag- got this bodega and it works fine on the starboard side as when it folds it does not interfere. this was about 130 but the construction is solid and if i go grocery shopping i use a folding plastic bag and that way i know how much stuff i can get. also it holds my bungee cords in case i get a 12pack of beer that keeps it well strapped on the rear cargo frame. 6. cup holder- duh 7. cell phone holder- duh 8. i don't really ride at night anymore because its just too scary with modern day drivers but i keep a set of rechargeable LED lights just in case 9. i also got a spare inter tube kit under the bike seat just in case 10. protection stickers- i picked these up because i wanted my bike not to look like a rental in Hawaii but they have saved the frame from lots of scratches so i am pleased hope that is helpful, i love the bike but it definitely has some things Schwinn can improve on and Beef up.

My LOOP came extremely well packed and secure. It is a gorgeous bike. I have not seen anything sub par about its construction. I was nervous due to the negative reviews. The manual was easy to follow and practice made folding and unfolding easier! The tires need inflating but that is pretty standard for bikes that are shipped . The weight of the bike seems heavier but it is indeed a sturdy bike not flimsy. The brakes seem tight so I’m going to have the bike adjusted professionally at a bike shop before I actually use it. My friend who bought a $2500 Electric bike had to do the same. I am feeling hopeful and optimistic that this will be a great bike for me. I’m short, 5’1 and of a medium weight and fairly active but being older I researched foldable bikes and due to being short I felt the loop was a great choice for me. I will review this bike again after it’s adjusted and I have used it. I’m keeping the box just in case it needs to be returned. So far it looks like a quality bike and I don’t really see any signs of sloppy workmsnship. I will do a follow up review . 4 stars right now until I use it. May 16, 2024 Brought it to a bike shop as the brakes looked liked they needed adjusting. Will be spending $90 to have the brakes and speeds adjusted as those are needed. I’m not handy with that stuff and have no idea how to do it but decided it was necessary to have a safe ride. Be aware that this may need to be done if you buy this bike. Will be updating when I finally ride it! May 27, 2024 update - after a $90 level 1 tune up it works great! Very happy with it. I have no reservations about the quality. I really love it. One very annoying thing about this Bike purchase is the fluctuation of price on the various colors on Amazon, you have to watch carefully and buy it at its lowest listed price on Amazon. I pd $412 then saw my white bike for $351 on Amazon now it’s up to $451. Now 6/7/24 absolutely love my loop!!! Important to: watch for the best price on Amazon as the price fluctuates Also before use have it adjusted by a bike shop or someone knowledgeable about bikes THIS BIKE IS SO EASY TO FOLD AND UNFOLD AND IS NOT TOO HEAVY! I’m very happy with it and glad I took a chance on it AUGUST 2024- had to come back and write how happy I am that I bought this bike! It is always in the back of my SUV ready to go! Unfolds in minutes and folds back up in minutes! I absolutely love it

Fun bike but seat hardware breaks easily

I purchased this little bike to get some exercise and to make trips to the store. Out of the box, the steering needed adjustment, so I took it to the bike shop and had the repair guy to make adjustments. He only charged me $32, so that wasn't so bad. I then purchased a seat cushion, which made the seat rideable for my use. I finally took the bike out for a ride. It was fun to ride, but after about ten minutes of riding, the hardware that attaches to the seat post broke and the saddle went vertical. So now, I will need to buy a new saddle and seat post, because I think the post may have been damaged too. The screws on the seat hardware bracket are so tight on the post, I won't bother trying to remove these. Also, the white model went on sale the day after I purchased this bike, so I'm miffed about that. I'm 30 pounds under the weight limit for this bike, so I wasn't expecting any malfunction. However, another reviewer mentioned the seat broke on her bike. If you buy this bike, be aware that you could be spending $100 to $190 more to make adjustments and upgrade the seat and post. If you do buy another seat, buy a comfort style seat because you need to sit more upright to pedal. With adjustments and taking it to two different bike shops for work right out of the box, I spent about $600 on this little bike.

This is my first bike. Before this one, I've ridden other people's bikes, hand me downs, rentals, my nieces' bikes... My main criteria was to get a foldable bike in my price range. This bike is a bestseller among folding bikes and it had a few selling points. For me, these were the step through frame and the rear rack. I'm 5' 1" and some and I'm always falling off adult bikes getting on and off because the top tube is too high (granted these bikes aren't fitted for me, just bikes I'm riding). The step through frame is a godsend. I just get on and go and don't bust my behind getting off. That is unless I lose my balance (it happens ;) I also did want lower gears because NYC is not as flat as they say. Queens for instance is extremely hilly. Once the bike got here, the box wasn't very big but it was heavy enough that I didn't enjoy carting it up to the second floor. You just tear it open and the bike is inside, folded sans it's folding pedal. Out the box, I do not recommend being lazy like me and just riding it 14 miles a day without getting it adjusted. The gears needed indexing and the breaks needed to be broken in because they make this lovely noise that cars make when you need to change your breaks. It is very distracting when your gears shift late in traffic. I finally dropped it off to the bike shop and they got it running smoothly. (And then one day it rained like crazy and it needs adjusting again apparently... so maybe the gears need indexing sooner than one would like.) The bike is easy to unfold and fold up, but keep in mind there is no mechanism to hold it together once it's folded. So it takes some getting used to carrying it around because if you don't hold it a certain way it may decide it wants to unfold and then it'll poke you. On that note, do not carry this bike around. Especially not in that bag it comes with. This bike is good to save space in your house. It is not meant to be carried around like a purse. It weights quite a bit. Which is great in the sense that it's very sturdy, but unless you lift heavy at the gym, don't do it. I live on the top floor of a brownstone. I carry the bike up and down because it rains a lot in the city so I don't like the idea of leaving it outside. It's fine to carry that length, but I wouldn't want to carry it more than that. And it is considerably easier to carry when unfolded. Folded, it pokes you and is a little awkward to carry. It doesn't take much space, so for those who want to stick it in their trunk, it'll fit fine. The handlebars are not adjustable. This could definitely pose a problem for some, but it's fine for me. I'd recommend swapping out the seat. It is very very uncomfortable. Also keep in mind the downtube has no mounting holes so consider other options for water storage. It is not pictured, but the bike does come with reflectors. As for the riding. I love it. When the gears are indexed it's a great ride. And the breaks are excellent. It holds up against potholes very well and I've ridden in the rain with no issues at all. It is not a loud or clunky bike. It is sturdy and smooth and great for carrying things. I'd definitely recommend it as a commuter bike

Stay away from this clunker!!!

I thought it would come fully assembled and ready to go. It was packaged properly but somehow my front fender and back fenders are twisted and crooked. That either happened at the factory or during shipping. After unfolding the bike and putting everything together i realized the brakes need to be calibrated. I spend around 2 hours trying to get the brakes calibrated. When riding the first time i realized the handlebar was crooked. So i had to figure out how to get that straight. It folds and unfolds ok, not the fastest or elegant way, but it doesn’t stay folded. It is heavy and since it doesn’t stay unfolded it is super unwieldy to carry around. I spent more effort and energy unfolding and carrying it than actually riding it. There are better bikes out there at the same price range that are easy to fold and carry. When its folded the carry side is the side with the chain and since this doesn’t have chain guard you will get grease on your legs and pants. The pedals are cheap plastic and the seat is hard. The brakes are super soft, i almost feel like i need to replace the brakes with something better. This bike is not worth the price as there are other that are similar priced. The assembly by lbs to activate the warranty is some sneaky s@@t they pulled knowing how expensive lbs are and so many people will be out of warranty. Our lbs charges $50 for a simple tuneup, add that to the cost and you got yourself a over $300 dollar bike. At that point for a little more you could get a dahon bike. I got suckered into buying this bike. Don’t make the same mistake i did and buy something else. Update: After a week of riding, I wish I could give it less than a star. The gears and shifters are s@#t. The brakes are still s@#t. I replaced the saddle and not this thing won't fold properly. Be careful if you are changing saddles, if you get a little wider saddle this thing won't fold properly.

White Schwinn Loop: Fast delivery, very well packaged. I purchased a returned,used, Loop and have to say it's in great condition. Just figured i'd save a little. So whomever returned this Schwinn Loop I'd like to say "thank you". Assembly was very easy as it came already put together. Adjusted seat to fit me. I did need to adjust brakes as they were not centered and were rubbing on one side of the brake pad. Also had to adjust derailer as the 6th gear was being skipped when shifting. Honestly it took around 10 minutes to get everything running properly after taking out of the box and airing up tires. I havent rode a bike in 30 or so years so the Schwinn Loop runs great I however am in terrible condition. The reason I bought the Loop is for weight loss, heart health, rural city commuting. My 1st ride last night was just a mile on flat roads which went well. My morning ride today, 2nd bike ride, was 3 miles with a small hill. I'm thinking im not in shape at all as I struggled hard climbing a short but steep hill. Still I really do like the Schwinn loop and hope to stay dedicated and ride. I'm hoping to ride at least every other day. I'll write an update later as I get used to riding. I did order a new seat post with a built in shock. Definately feel every bump and pot hole. Also a better more cushiony seat as many reviews mentioned how uncomfortable the stock seat is. However for short rides i think the stock seat is perfectly usable. Really wasn't uncomfortable though for a longer bike ride I'd think a better thicker seat would be beneficial. I'm 5'6" tall, 170 lbs as of today. Looking to lose another 15 lbs this summer or maybe 20 I'm hoping at least. Oh and quit smoking. Seriously I'm in terrible shape, sucking wind hard at the moment. But hey it's all good this Schwinn Loop just might be my best incentive to quit smoking(35 year bad habit). Oh and I really like the step through design. I'm 53(middle aged) and have a history of multiple leg and back injuries. Osteoarthritis, degenerative disk disease, to protruding disks and diabetes etc, etc. The upright sitting position works really well for me. I gave up riding 12 speed and mountain bikes 32 years ago as the hunched over riding position caused my lower back injury to swell and cut off circulation to my legs. That still happens but I can ride recumbent, cruiser and step through bikes without that problem happening.
