Description

This is Samyang's newest fisheye lens for Nikon. It features some great new features that are not available on Samyang's first highly rated 8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens. Optics and glass are high definition (HD) with very clear & sharp images. This lens also features a removable hood which will make it easier for use on full frame cameras. While this lens is designed for APS-C sensors, full frame users can now use it without the hood. On APS-C cameras like the Nikon D5100/D3200/D3100, the pictures will fill the entire frame or screen. On full frame cameras like the Nikon D4 & D800, the lens will produce pictures with a semi-circular image and close images will appear proportionately large for a dramatic effect.

  • Second Time Around The Charm!
Style: Canon
I originally ordered this lens in the Rokinon version from Amazon. Samyang manufactures the same lens and it gets rebranded under various other names, but it is exactly the same except for a different name stamped on it. The reviews for this lens under the various brand names are all over the map. The Rokinon copy I previously received was never able to be focused under any circumstances. Now this lens is completely manual, and really the only way to focus is via "live view" and even then, the focus is very subtle. For the most part, anything more than two or three feet out and you can safely leave the focus on infinity and you will be fine. The prior Rokinon version was soft close and far, as if the focus ring had no effect at all, or perhaps, there was some maladjustment that prevented the lens from reaching Infinity focus. If you hunt around on the internet, there is information regarding pushing aside the rubber focus ring material and reaching some screws underneath to make a focus adjustment, but I didn't have that much energy, so I returned it. However, there are a lot of rave reviews about this lens, so I thought I would give it another shot. As it turns out, I'm glad I did. The Samyang branded copy I received on round two works great. Now remember it is fully manual lens. I have been using it in camera manual mode, and the reviews all seem to say that best results are obtained at 5.6 or 8 aperture, so I start there, and then just dial in ISO and shutter speed as necessary. If you use live view, you can get your exposure in the ball park fairly easily, and then take a few test shots and/or look at the histogram. The attached dog picture was taken in fairly low light from less than a foot away. I played with the focus in live view zoomed in quite a bit. The focus ring did seem to make a difference. The other picture was just set the infinity with no specific attempt to focus. Both ends (close up and distant) seemed to work out pretty good, and much, much better than the Rokinon version. This lens seems well made. I'm not a professional photographer, so there is no way I could justify $1250 bucks for the Canon version of what is basically a specialty or novelty lens. But at this price point, it seems to produce pretty sharp images and is well made, if you get a functional copy. I would recommend this lens, but i would plan on using it immediately upon receipt, and before the return period expires, to make sure you were provided with a good copy. • Exceptional niche lens for the price
Style: Canon
I have the Canon version. This is a fully manual lens. This means that even though it is APS-C I can still use it on my full frame (images will appear circular). Focus and aperture setting are manual. At this range you don't really need to adjust focus much anyways and depth of focus doesn't seem to change much with aperture so it is mostly for how much light you want to let in. Image quality and sharpness are nice. It has issues with lens flares and sometimes chromatic aberration. Another problem with this lens is that you cannot use filters. This lens is absolutely worth more than it's price. If you are looking for a fisheye then this lens is worth considering. ... show more

  • Great Fisheye, Unbelievable Value
When i first saw this fisheye lens being advertised on Amazon i must admit i had my fair share of doubts. I had never thought to myself the possibility of buying a fully manual lens and it seemed to me as if it would be a hassle to own such equipment. Oh how i was wrong. This Samyang 8mm CS II lens has the largest depth of field i have ever seen, i simply set the focusing to beyond infinity and provided I'm taking a picture of something at least 1m away, everything in view will be perfectly clear. The lens is insanely sharp in closeups, however it can be soft when zooming in on things in the distance if at an aperture of F3.5 The very second you bump up the aperture to F5.6 or F8 or even F11 the sharpness of this lens of subjects especially in the distance improves unimaginably, so much so that at F11 it is maybe my sharpest lens. I would definitely recommend simply leaving this lens at F8 or F11 preferably, set at Infinity and would only ever change it if lighting was bad and a smaller F number is needed where an increase in ISO would not be justifiable. In conclusion, for the measly price of <$300 this lens is an insane bargain and i got to hand it to Samyang for making a terrific piece of glass. P.S. the focusing ring is probably the best dampened and smoothest ring i have ever had the pleasure to use. 5/5 stars :-) ... show more

  • BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!!!!!!
Style: Canon
If you are in the market for a fish eye lens, this is definitely the lens for you! I ordered this lens on a Saturday and had it in my hands on Monday. Like has been stated previously, this is a manual focus lens but, don't let that bother you, if you are photographing anything that is more than two feet away, just put it on infinity and and shoot away. This is the first fish eye lens I've ever had and it is quickly becoming my favorite lens. Excellent Quality, excellent price, nice sharp images. Well worth the price. ... show more

  • Nice specialty lense. Good quality optics
Style: Canon
Fits and works with my Cannon 60D Seems to be quality optics. I was thought it would couple w/the auto focus, etc. but requires full manual focus shutter and aperture settings. No big deal from my standpoint, but not something for the auto or semi-auto user.

  • Great lens for 360 photos
Style: Nikon
It is working great for making 360 degrees panoramas. It does not have autofocus, but due to its depth of field and wide-angle autofocus is not required. Nice lens cover included.

  • Didn't live up to the hype for me.
Style: Canon
No matter how I turned the focusing ring, or altered my lens to subject distance, I could not get a sharp image from this lens. I could only assume that the internal focusing mechanism was broken, and thus had to return it.

  • Better than I expected.
Style: Nikon
Better than I expected. Manual focus is not a problem since the depth of field is almost 0 to infinity. Set it once and forget it for the most part. Very good build quality, smooth mounting and removing, smooth focus ring and aperture ring. Works on both full frame and half frame although full frame shots will be circular with the lens hood removed. Not something you will use every day, but fun for special shots and occasions. ... show more
