  • Several key improvements to last year's Galaxy Tab A 10.1"
Color: Gray Size: 32GB Pattern Name: Tablet
Just received this tablet and after using it for a few days, there are a few key improvements over last year's Galaxy Tab A 10.1" (2019) that make this worth the upgrade to me... summary here, full details below: + The extra 1gb of RAM compared to the 32gb version makes a huge difference + the 4 speaker array (instead of just at the bottom) is so much better for watching movies + new placement of the front-facing video camera helps a ton for video conferences + face authentication!! there was no biometric authentication last year + The rounded screen is actually a nice design touch in my opinion. - if tablet used in portrait, the ambient light sensor is placed where it will frequently get covered (and darken the screen if using ambient light sensor) - really "cold" white and light bleed from edges of screen - does suffer some lag when multiple apps open, but much better than last year's galaxy Tab A - portrait/landscape rotation sensing is too sensitive THE PROS I used the Galaxy Tab A 10.1" over the past year since it was released. I thought the 2019 Tab A was a great tablet when I got it but after using it a year, I'd give it only 3 stars. These tablets aren't powerful enough except for browsing, watching movies or other media consumption, and a basic games. Last year, I chose the 32gb Galaxy Tab A which only had 2gb of RAM, and that turned out to be more frustrating than anticipated thus I wanted an upgrade. I had to frequently "close all apps" or suffer very noticeable lags or apps that wouldn't even open (apps linking into Amazon's Shopping for Tablet app as an example). This is definitely improved with the 3GB RAM this tablet has, although I will still "close all apps" about once per day. 1 frustration I have with the 6th gen 9.7" iPad (2018) and the Galaxy Tab A 10.1" (2019) are the placement of only 1 set of "stereo" speakers on the bottom of the device. In landscape, this always bothered me and was 1 thing I appreciated with Amazon's Fire HD tablets. The addition of speakers to the top of this tablet was almost enough alone to sell me on this tablet and if that matters to you, it makes a huge difference! Since this is a tablet and with this new era of Zoom meetings, I found I actually care about front-facing cameras and I've noticed that the original positioning last year on the top of the tablet in portrait made it off-centered. It's not been moved to the side (or top in landscape) and this takes advantage of the screen for Zoom so much better. It also makes all the bezels symmetrical, which is kind of nice. There is face authentication with this tablet! I'm sure it's not nearly as robust as my iPhones (And does not work in low light), but the addition of this is fantastic! Last year I was using Trusted Lock based on GPS location at my home combined with a PIN number, which was not a huge problem, but I love this addition. Finally, the screen is rounded at the corners which I think gives it a nice little touch. It's not an OLED screen, but at this price I don't have any complaints. It's about the same as last years. THE CONS The ambient light sensor is next to the camera on the side, which if you use your tablets in portrait, is often where your hand is. This darkens the screen dramatically and so I have to turn this off since unless I'm watching a video, I'm always using this in portrait. The default white balance is really cold, so I use the blue light filter a lot... Also, there is some light bleed on the edges of the screen. It doesn't bother me at this price point but was these are the main reasons I'd give this 4 instead of 5 stars. This one is like 5 mm wider than last year's version.--not a big deal to me. Otherwise, the only other real con is it's not super powerful. There is still some lag with this tablet, although again improved from last year. Overall, I think it's fair in the price point but this is not a performance tablet. COMPARISON TO FIRE HD10 AND BASIC IPAD I prefer this to the Fire HD10 though because it has Google Play Store on its own. I really like stock Android (and held onto the Nexus 7 2013 way too long because of that), but Samsung's One UI is pretty decent and not obtrusive enough that I miss stock Android much. The only customizations I did was replace keyboard with Google's and uninstalled several default Samsung apps; I didn't install Google Launcher or Nova. When I had a Fire HD10, which was not the most recent version, I also had trouble getting all of Google's basic apps to work.. not sure if that' s till an issue. I prefer the UI on these to Amazon Fire's, and overall it's worth the extra $50-$80 to me compared to the Fire HD10. Compared to our iPad that mostly my wife uses, I do like the narrower form factor of this one. It's just a bit more comfortable to hold. Last year I almost bought the 7th gen iPad, but since the processor was same as our 6th gen, I went with this one thinking this year I might upgrade. This year's iPad does have a new processor and I was planning to get that until I saw this came out, but for the price (in between the 8th gen iPad and the Fire HD10), 4 speaker array, and biometric authentication, this tablet meets my needs and included key features I missed--so, thanks Samsung! EDIT: followup 4 months later - docked a star from 4 stars to 3 stars as it does suffer some performance lag with multiple apps open. I "close all apps" about once per day (although compared to last year's tablet, I was doing it every 15 minutes" - I've found the portrait/landscape sensing to be super sensitive, to the point it sometimes gets annoying ... show more

  • Nice Tablet - Worth the Money For Me Update to Android 11 is Available
Color: Silver Size: 64GB Pattern Name: Tablet
Update 5/25/21 1. Just got updated to UI Core 3.1 Samsung's latest UI which includes Android 11. No problem with the update. 2. Hopefully the update will improve battery discharge. While it isn't bad the Fire HD 10.1" seems to be better. Also battery charging takes noticeably longer than on the Fire HD 10.1. 3. Found out it comes with McAfee mobile AV along with Google Play Protect. Not the best Android AV products but for what I use the tablet for they should be good enough and the price is right. First things first. No two people use a tablet exactly the same way. With that in mind this review is based upon how I use the tablet. Having said that here is how I use the tablet in order of usage 1. Reading books. 85% All the books I read can be conveniently downloaded so I don't need WiFi access to read what I have already downloaded. 2. Playing Music 5% either from apps, streaming live from radio stations or from the SD card I added.. I was able to use the SD card which I had in Fire 10". Did need to reformat it so I lost all the stuff I had on SD card. Since it all was in the Cloud I can easily download it again. The audio is more than adequate however, using a Bluetooth speaker enhances the quality of the sound. I would recommend using either earphones, earbuds or a Bluetooth speaker or speakers to listen to music and for watching some movies. 3. Watching videos 5% As professional reviewers of Tab a7 have noted, the display is not great. It is adequate for watching videos especially those in Black and White but if you are picking about the display quality you won't be happy with the Tab a7. I haven't tried watching any movies from the web or a cloud drive. So I can't comment on whether there could be a buffering issue on watching those videos. 4. Surfing the Net, email etc 5% Its okay but pages written with a lot of Java script will render a bit slow. Some general comments in no particular order 1. The Virtual Keyboard. More than adequate if you don't do a lot of typing. If you do, getting a compatible keyboard would be better 2. Apps. Using the Samsung Switch app I was easily able to transfer all the apps and Google data like saved passwords from my Pocophone without any problem, once I figured out how it worked. All the apps came over fine and all I needed to do was to organize them on the home screen. App store updates from the Play Store work fine and I was easily able to add some apps on the Tab a7 that I don't have on my Pocophone 3. Security Play Store Protect works and there is other built in security. In any case I like Bitdefender Mobile which I have used for years on multiple Android devices. It installed fine and works good. I also use Adguard. Again, it installed fine and does what it says it will do. 4. Initial setup A bit difficult as the display brightness defaults to 1? out of 100 during the initial setup making it a bit difficult to see things on the display. Once the initial setup is done you can manually set the display brightness or use the Adaptive Brightness feature. 5. Android. It comes with Android 10 and the Samsung 2.5 UI. Word is Samsung has no plans to upgrade the Tab a7 to Android 11, but that could change. Android security updates are quarterly as opposed to monthly with evidently a four year promise. 6. The Samsung 2.5 UI is very lacking compared to the Xiaomi 10.3 UI on my Pocophone also running Android 10. However it does include the basics in Settings depending on what one considers the basics. For example I haven't found a way to run dual apps which you can do on the Pocophone. With a larger display being able to have two apps side by side would be a nice feature. 7. Microsoft apps and printing. All the Microsoft apps that I have tested on the Tab a7 and i use on my Pocophone have worked fine on the Tab a7 though I haven't tested all of them. I don't know if the Microsoft "Your Phone" app works on the Tab a7 though it works with a lot of Samsung phones. However the tab a7 does that the ability to connect to your phone and show and create text messages on Tab a7. So apparently you don't need a cellular on the Tab a7 to send text messages. I was able to easily able to set up printing and print a Word document on my HP printer. I printed it over WiFi. The Tab a7 has video calling and I would guess Teams and Zoom capability. Since I don't use any of those features I can't comment any further on them. For the money it is nice tablet for what I use it for. For me it is no big deal that it might not update to Android 11 as long as the security updates keep rolling out for the promised four years from the tablet's release date late in 2020. If I get three or four years of use out of the Tab a7 I will be happy with it. Four stars out five for me. ... show more

  • Warning!*** Battery inflated. Dangerous!
Color: Silver Size: 32GB Pattern Name: Tablet
I have owned this tablet since May 7, 2021, and for the most part, it has been good to me. I use it to watch youtube videos and read pdf files when playing D&D. The battery lasts about 2 days with light use and all day with heavy use. I took the tablet to a friend's house to play a game and noticed the screen was curved and the screen itself was popping out of the case. I tried to push it back in but it popped out again and again. I looked up what could be causing this and the most frequent cause is the battery is SWELLING. Batteries usually swell a little when charging but this is inflating larger than what would be considered safe, and it is recommended to have the battery replaced, as there is a possibility it could burst into flames. It is a good tablet, I do wish it was a little larger screen-wise, but I will get the battery replaced to ensure I can keep using it. I hope that kiosk at the mall can help me out. ... show more
