Needed for several projects and the 1st one was acheiveable when the thumb screws were tightened with pliers. Couldn't get them tight enough with my fingers using the "Edge ruler" set at 2", kept slipping and would stretch to 2.25-2.5". Design is good but it also prohibits full access to the knobs being small and close together (big hands/fingers). Hated to put pliers on the knobs to get them tighter, feeling they'd fail soon but with several more uses needed i think the solution is to cut a slot in each knob to make them into a slotted screws for a screwdriver to tighten. Next trip to the hardware store i'll see if they have a micro-machine bolt to swap out the knurled knobs and could use a wrench instead.

This scribing tool feels reasonably well-built in the hand, which is a positive point, aligning somewhat with the descriptions mentioning its aluminum alloy construction. For a 3-star rating, I'd say the overall quality seems okay for occasional use, but it doesn't quite feel like a premium, highly durable tool as some product highlights might suggest. In terms of using it, as I mentioned, the build quality feels fine, which is reassuring. However, I did find that it was a bit too bulky for my preference, despite being advertised as compact and easy to carry. More importantly, I experienced issues with its performance; it didn't seem to grip hard enough when trying to set it, and frustratingly, it tended to lose its form when I was in the middle of drawing lines or arcs. This made achieving consistent and precise marks difficult, which is a key function of a tool like this and goes against the advertised precision and ability to lock in shape.
