I ordered this mattress protector for my boyfreind who had a run-in with bedbugs a few years ago and is still a bit paranoid about it. He had just purchased a new queen sized pillow top mattress a couple months prior, and I figured this would be a good time to protect it and a chance to give him some extra peace of mind. To be clear, about the time this came in, we found what we think was a loner bedbug in or close to maturity, and I had gotten a few bites over the course of a week while staying there and sleeping on the new bed. Between these protectors (I bought one for the boxsprings and one for the mattress), a heat gun, and copious amounts of Diatemacious Earth (spelling? It's a fine dust of super small sharp particles that essentially cut into insects' joints and bodies, killing them), the bug was never seen again. I would highly recommend the dust to anyone fighting bugs, in conjunction with these covers. I would recommend opening the package and examining the seams - all of them, including the zipper - and look over the fabric for any defects. There were several reviews that complained about loose stitching or tears. These are made in huge factories on machines at a ridiculous pace - sometimes things get a little out of line at that kind of speed and scale, so it never hurts to check. Ours were both great. Also, some complained about the 'chemical' or 'plastic' smell. They are a bit strong, but running them through the washer and dryer first, as suggested on the package, takes care of that. We washed the two covers together, with nothing else. Initially, we left them zipped to avoid damage to the fine coil of the zipper, but in hindsight, I would say lust leave it unzipped all the way. When it came to the spin cycle, the closed zippers and the water resistance of the covers created giant flappy water balloons that kept throwing the washer out of balance. We unzipped them to release the water and it was all fine. They will take a ridiculous amount of time to dry. Just keep the heat low, be patient, and take them out to rearrange them in the dryer again to help them dry evenly. Some reviewers wrote about their covers melting or becoming brittle form drying - because they turned the heat too high. Just chill. You had to wait for the thing to ship to your house, waiting a couple hours with the dryer isn't gonna hurt you. We put them both on easily with two people, but with some patience and gracefullness, a single person may be able to do it. Having two people makes it easier to prevent tears in the cover after installing, while moving the mattress back into place. I gifted a protector for boxsprings and a mattress to my boyfriend for his new bed 4 months ago. He had a run in with bed bugs a few years that left him mildly traumatized. If you want a guaranteed rant, just ask him about it - On second thought, don't go there. We don't even go there. But, back to the covers.... I read a lot of reviews - mostly great, and several pretty bad - before purchasing. We had no problems with either of our covers. Here's what we looked out for based on the negative reviews (and common sense): - Check all seams for rips, loose stitches, and the like, one seam at a time so you don't miss anything. - Check over the fabric...all of it...for any rips, snagged threads, holes, or the like. Do this right out of the package so you can use the crease lines to help track your progress. - Run your covers through the washer with a bit of soap to neutralize the 'chemical' smell. Unzip it all the way to prevent the formation of a giant flappy water balloon that with try to strangle the agitator as your washer jumps about like a wild rodeo bull (yep, this happened). Unzip it all the way to prevent damage from the zipper getting pulled open, in case the two sides try to go opposite directions. - CHECK THE HEAT SETTING ON YOUR DRYER - Turn it down so you don't risk melting any of the synthetic materials. If it feels like you're taking a ridiculous amount of time to run it through and you're starting to feel like you're worrying too much, then YOU"RE DOING IT RIGHT! Take it out and fluff it and flip it around to help it dry evenly and (slightly) faster. I think we ran our covers through, like, 4 dryer cycles.... - Have two people to help put it on. It goes fairly easy and quick with a bit of teamwork and a plan, and will help prevent potential snags or rips from tugging. We slipped the cover over one end and slid it into place, then zipped one side before laying it down. We than lifted the zipped side up so we could straighten out the bottom of the cover in order to zip up the other end. Laid it down once more to zip the last side, and put the mattress/boxspring in place. - Be careful with the zipper. Gently tug your fabric into place so that the two sides of the zipper are close to each other and aligned. The zipper is small and fine so it can create a good bug barrier... Be nice to it, and it should zip just fine. Ours did have a couple "sticky patches" where it didn't quite want to zip. Just gently tug and coax the zipper pull, or unzip a ways and try again. If frustrated, walk away. It's not worth potentially busting that zipper after all the time and money you've spent on it thus far. - If you already have bedbugs, understand that this cover is not some magical kryptonite that eradicates bugs by simply existing in the same room. It can only kill bugs trapped inside, on an already affected mattress by trapping them in there until they starve (about a year or something crazy). Diatemacious (sp?) Earth will kill any bug it comes in contact with. Try using this in conjunction with your covers. ... show more

It actually is exactly what I was looking for and surprisingly exceeded my expectations on some of its claims... It definitely prevents anything that you wouldn't want touching your mattress from touching your mattress. I never post ratings until I put any product to good use. I honestly can say that this review comes from plenty of experience that involves a female Pomeranian puppy that my girlfriend and I just brought into our home. It also has a soft top layer which makes it unnoticeable both by touch and sound. This was a must and I had lowered my expectations to try to not be disappointed but I was gratefully impressed. I have even forgotten it was on there and only am reminded when cleaning the bed sheets. *Ease of installation note* One thing that people may not think about but was definitely a pleasant thing about this mattress cover was the ease at which it was installed. It honestly took me over an hour. I have a queen size mattress and it fits tightly in its bed-frame. I am a neat freak (and was going solo) and didn't want to pull out the mattress and let it touch the GROUND to help put the cover on. Needless to say it was terrible but looking back it went better than I should have expected. The cover (on the sides and bottom) is made out of a silky and very smooth material which I should be grateful made it a 1 hour task instead of a 5 hour task. It slid nicely between the box frame and my mattress and did not snag on the sides of the mattress either when pulling it tight or closed. Last thing...the zipper is sturdy and good quality too which makes me feel a little bit better about things being kept away from the mattress. It also has a zipper cover to hide the clasp which makes it just that more discrete (unnoticeable) that you have a pretty extreme quality cover over your mattress. ... show more

So far so good

We had several guests over, and we aren’t sure if it was the new neighbors that moved in from out of state (to an adjoined-wall townhouse unit), or our out of town guests, but someone brought in some dreadful bed bugs. Or so we think they are, we have no idea as we never saw them but would wake up with bites on our upper arms and face! We never saw any evidence on the bed or bedding or anywhere so it was pretty frustrating. We tried as much as we could without harsh chemicals as I was worried about the toxicity for my toddler. We started getting bit after they left, and thought they may have hitchhiked on their suitcases when they stayed at an Airbnb. I constantly washed and dried the sheets on the highest setting, laid down some of that Harris bed bug Diatomaceous earth powder (around the perimeter, legs and inside the outlets), and tried to steam the mattress and perimeter- spent hours doing that, and it didn’t seem to help. What seem to help from getting bit at least was lathering on lavender or eucalyptus scented body lotion from Bath & Body, and spraying around the bed with the same essential oils that were slightly diluted . Long story short, I’m not sure if the buggies are still around. But after I had taped up all the outlets and anything that had a small opening around the walls in the affected rooms, and using this bed encasement, we haven’t been bit, and it’s been several months so far. Make sure your bed is away from the walls too! And put a small plastic castor or deli dish under you bed legs, and put some of that D.E. Powder in it, so they will climb in and get trapped in that. Though we’ve yet to see one 🤷🏻♀️. Ok back to the encasement, I bought this one and the GuardMax zippered mattress encasement at the same time for my Queen mattress and box spring. I can’t remember which one I used for what, but they were both easy to put on. I did it by myself, as. 5’4” female, and took less than 5 min each to put them on. Make sure to remove your mattress from the frame, and put it on its (long) side. Then slip the cover on long ways, and slide it top and bottom, and when get about halfway, tilt the whole mattress towards the uncovered side so you can continue sliding the encasement. Just be gentle as you don’t want to tear it, especially when you are laying it back down on the bed frame. We haven’t had any issues with heat or crinkling sounds either. So far it’s been a great investment! I can’t speak to the waterproofness yet, but being bug free so far, we have been quite pleased! ... show more

Great protection, but read this if you have a toddler

From a fit and feel standpoint, this protector is excellent. It goes on easily, stays perfectly in place through the night, and, most importantly, you completely forget it's there. No crinkling, no stiffness, no sleeping-on-a-tarp feeling. The mattress feels exactly the same with it on. One note on sizing: we're running an 8" mattress and there's a bit of slack. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you're on the thinner end. Here's my one genuine concern, and it's specific to toddler use: the plush velvet top, while comfortable, feels like it could absorb liquid before the waterproof layer does its job. With a standard fitted sheet on top, a nighttime accident may still require pulling the whole protector off for washing. The zippered encasement design is excellent for allergen and dust mite protection, but for active bedwetters you may want to pair this with a quick-dry flat waterproof pad on top as a first line of defense. For an older child or adult bed, I'd give this five stars without hesitation. For toddler accident protection specifically, just go in with the right expectations. Look no further!

My husband travels to New York City frequently. The past four years bed bugs have become common place there -- and many other metropolitan areas in the U.S. And as another reviewer stated: bed bugs do not discriminate, high-priced hotels are subjected to the same infestations as their low-priced counterparts. I am, as most likely you are, freaked out by the whole thing. Did he bring home bed bugs in his suitcase? I honestly don't know! My skin has broken out in hives possibly from anxiety. I went to town scrubbing, washing, sprinkling diatomaceous earth, etc. Naturally, we purchased mattress, box spring, and pillow case covers. We recently upgraded to a King size bed. The local Target, where I purchased all my other mattress covers, did not sell ones that would fit my Euro top mattress. The mattress shop wanted more than $100 for one mattress cover, and considering the fact that I would need to buy two (one for the mattress, another for the box spring) I chose to shop online. Though my mattress is technically only 15," I wanted to make certain there would be no fitting challenges, so I ordered the King Size SafeRest Waterproof Lab Certified Bed Bug Proof Zippered Mattress Encasement (Fits 15 - 18 in. H). This product exceeded my expectations! The top is a soft, cotton terry cloth, unlike any others I have used. The zipper covered nearly 3/4 of the mattress, unlike the others that typically cover a bit more than a 1/4. It was simple for two people to install it, took my husband and I less than five minutes. (I imagine one person could do it, it would just take longer a little more maneuvering.) There was, as to be expected, excess material (that can easily be draped and tucked under), so I imagine it truly would fit an 18" mattress. The cover does not create any noise when you move on the bed. While I'm not sure I need to be protected from bed bugs, I do have a senior kitty that now and again has digestive issues which I'm certain this cover will protect my mattress from. (Most mattress companies will not honor your warrantee if there are any visible stains on the mattress -- no matter how small or insignificant it is too the problem with the mattress.) As soon as I finish writing this review I am going to see if this company makes King size pillow protectors. Comfortable AND Useful

Imagine how horrified I was to move into an apartment after selling my house, only to have bedbugs turn up! The inspector couldn’t find any evidence of infestation other than the live one I found, so we still don’t know if it was the apartment, the movers, or the used moving boxes my Realtor kindly gave me. Nevertheless, part of the protocol for eliminating them is to use full encasements for the mattress and box springs if I don’t want to throw them out. There was no sign of bugs on them, so I went for the encasements. I have a king size bed with the usual split box springs, so I had to buy three encasements altogether. I wasn’t very picky about the box springs, but the mattress was a big deal. Almost all of the options were not only bug proof, but also waterproof. I had tried a waterproof cover before, but it had such bad heat feedback I threw it out within a week. Not only that, but it groaned and crackled, and was all around a bad purchase. So this time around I did a lot of research and read a ton of reviews, few-to-none said anything about noise or heat. By and large, this cover is the best. It’s important to note that a mattress cover is not the same as a mattress pad. A cover is just a shield with a few bonus features. A pad is a comfort enhancement. Some items want to be both, but I don’t think it’s possible. This is a mattress cover, protector, and in that role it’s a really good one. The tight weave of the fabric protects against allergens and the dreaded bugs. It sports a terry top with the expectation that you wouldn’t need/want an additional mattress pad, but it’s just too thin for me. After I installed the cover, I put on my mattress pad (after washing in really hot water and drying on high, of course), and the comfort level is intact. That is a very important note for me because, as noted, I can’t handle heat feedback. I haven’t noticed any change. The biggest issue I had against it was my king mattress and trying to will it into the cover. I’m just a 50-something short chick. I would have appreciated some tips and tricks included with the package, but I was on my own. Luckily, the zipper is really long, and you have about three-quarters of it being open to work with. My success was found in flipping the mattress up against the wall, unzipping the cover, and spreading it over the boxes almost like a fitted sheet, and dropping the mattress back down a little offset so I could slide it into the pocket of the unopened part without the cover sliding out of place. Then I just zipped it up! Again, this is not a mattress “pad.” The terry top is thin, but snuggly in a pinch. You would be a lot happier with a real mattress pad over it. The value of this is in the dust, allergen, bug properties. The whole thing is tightly woven fabric to keep the heebie jeebies out. Given how long you will keep your bed, and how long this will extend its life, plus that it doesn’t rustle, crackle, crinkle, etc., it’s worth the price. ... show more

Helped fix my bed bug problem

I live in a single family and haven't actually done any travelling for over a year. So really I have no idea how I got a bed bug infestation. I have a two and four year old that sleep in the bed with me, and the one that slept at the edge always end up with bed bug bites. At first I thought it was a rash caused by detergent but when I took the kids to the pediatrician he suggested that it may be bed bugs. So I removed the bed sheets and inspected the seams...sure enough, the side where the kids slept, there were small black droppings along the seams. I pulled the folds along the seams open and BAM! A bed bug darted out. First attempt: My first attempt in clearing out the infestation involved removing the bed frame and steam cleaning the mattress and box spring. I counted about 20 adolescent to adult bed bugs more "nymphs" than I could count. I could see that the bed bugs fell dead as soon as it touched the steam so I felt pretty confident that the bugs were wiped out after the steam cleaning...but two days later.... I found another 4 bites on my son's arms. So I ordered this mattress cover and some diatomaceous earth from Amazon. My plan was to trap the bed bugs inside the mattress cover and starve them to death. Supposedly bed bugs can survive up to one year with no food. Second attempt: I steam cleaned the whole mattress and box spring again...the mattress does get a little wet so I stood it on one end and left it t to dry for a couple hours. I was about to put the mattress back in place when I noticed one adult bed bug crawling along the side! I already bought this mattress cover, but that just tells me that steam cleaning in itself won't solve the problem. The bed bugs are just so small and flat that they can hide along the seams very effectively. So I put this Saferest mattress cover on. 3 days later, I found 2 more very small bites on my sons arms. There's no place for the bugs to hide with this mattress cover on so I suspect the bugs were hiding in the electrical outlet behind my bed, so I dusted the electrical outlet and the bottom of the mattress with diatomaceous earth. I think this multi-prong approach has worked as it's been almost 3 weeks now with no signs over new bites. Supposedly bed bugs tend to feed at least once a week SO LET ME JUST SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THIS COVER: I bought the King Size mattress cover, and two twin XL low profile for my box spring set. Both were made with excellent quality. The zipper itself is low profile with small teeths to prevent the bed bug nymphs from crawling out. I don't know how Saferest did it as I didn't think it was possible but this material really does handle water well as well as it being breathable. As I said earlier, I have two kids so needless to say they've already accidentally spilled some water on the mattress cover. I washed the bed sheet, but only had to wipe the cover with a towel to dry it. I didn't let the water pool so I don't know how "waterproof" it really is. But so far it's been very impressive. Regarding comfort: I've been sleeping on this for 3 weeks now and I don't even notice the cover being there. I've used waterproof coverings underneath the sheets before when I was potty training my 4 year old, and they tend to make me sweat. But with this cover, I haven't experienced any of that. It's like I'm not even using a water proof cover. CONCLUSION: Hopefully this post will help you rid yourself of this annoying bug. Use a steamer to bring down the bed bug population. Then use the mattress cover (I definitely recommend Saferest) to trap any bugs still living in the mattress. The diatomaceous earth is to stop any other bugs from crawling up the bed to bite you. Perfect for me

I had a previous encasement on my mattress that was very tight and because of that the zipper broke a while ago and there were some rips on the seams. I finally had to get rid of it due to some liquid getting on it, and after reading reviews on similar products settled on this one. I have a 14 1/2' queen size mattress (a firm mattress with a pillow top that has crushed a bit, so I believe it was 15" but doesn't really go that high anymore) and bought the 12-15" size. My husband put it on (I'm pregnant so I can't battle the huge mattress) and he said it was a dream to put on. The last one we had was so tight that it took four people to slide it on; with this one he put in on by himself. He said there was still some room left over as far as the fit, and the zipper is long enough that it allows the encasement to go on easily. He first washed and dried it at the laundromat (washed in warm water, dried at the lowest setting because of the waterproof layer) and it came out just fine. With the sheets on I can tell it's a bit loose; with the previous one (of a different brand) the sheets would balloon a bit and there were no wrinkles because of the tight fit. Now, the sheets do wrinkle a bit but it feels more comfortable. I also find that my husband doesn't sweat up the sheets as much because this one seems to actually let the air through so it's not too hot. The seams are very tight and the zipper is also very secure, so I think it should be a good barrier against bedbugs. As far as dust mites, I feel like I've been sleeping better since I've had it (being pregnant I don't sleep well anyway so I'm not so sure). It has the waterproof casing which I found does work because I also have a waterproof cover underneath this encasement (which I had with the old one) and when some liquid spilled on the mattress very little went through the waterproof layer (it was quite a bit of liquid).
