  • WOW!
So first off this thing is quite heavy weighing in around 30 lbs. I was at best buy looking at subs earlier today and picked up some kickers and polk audio subs and they were less than half the weight of one of these bad boys. I have this paired with a prefab box (A custom box would sound even better) and the box is 1.85 cu ft (not including the .14 cu ft the sub itself takes up so its about 1.71 cu ft) and it's tuned to 38 hertz. Sundown recommends somewhere around 33 and 35 hertz for tuning and up to about 2 cu ft for a ported box. So i'm not quite using the specs I want, but the subs make up for that. A friend of mine was using 2 old sony xplod subs in a ported box blah blah blah maxing out their power etc. I thought her bass was "loud" (coming from someone with no experience) but I just have 1 of these 12" subs which btw weighs more than both her subs combined (huge magnet on this thing). Together the box and sub weigh around 70 lbs which was a bit heavier than I anticipated, but I love the raw weight of it alone. Enough rambling, now to the good stuff. I've read around and it seems that the 600rms is way underrated. I have a cheap (but powerful) amp pushing around 850 clean rms with this sub wired in parallel down to 2 ohms. I went for a test drive in the country after a quick and easy tuning of my amp when the song played my jaw dropped. I wish I could rate this higher than a 5/5. It has definitely exceeded my expectations. I still need to retune the amp to make it a perfect match with this sub, but even with a quick tune this thing gets loud. for 200 bucks I doubt you could beat it especially if put in the right box with a more powerful amp. I can't wait to "surprise" a friend of mine (has no idea i installed an audio system) with this bad boy. Even at a fraction of the power this thing can bump. I personally don't want to wake everyone up nearby, but if you want to be heard 3+ blocks away, then get this sub, it will not disappoint. ... show more

I am running one SA-12 D4 Version 3 with a Rockford Fosgate 1200D.1 amp, at 2 ohms. I have it in the $36.00 Q-Box that you can find here on Amazon. I am very impressed with this woofer. It handles both low sustained and quick, tight, bass-drum kicks. People in the back seat complain for me to turn the bass down because it is uncomfortable to them. I have been using this speaker for about 2 weeks and am very impressed. You will not be dissatisfied. Buy it! Update: I thought I blew one of the voice coils, but it turns out something was wrong with the fuse that went in my inline amp power line. Whenever I would hit some kind of sustained bass note, my amp would hit protection mode so I thought it was the speaker. WRONG! After I got that sorted out, I continued break-in and am now on full-out hammering. I would give this woofer 6 stars, if I could. I bought the NVX equivalent of this woofer and was blown away by the improvement over low frequencies and the ability to hit tight bass notes while a sustained bass note is playing. Now that it is broken-in, I understand what peeps are talking about. You simply can't beat this woofer for the mix of low frequency capability, stout power-handling, loudness, and the mixture of the abilities to recreate hammering bass notes and more subtle bass drum kicks. This is just the best woofer on the market. Don't buy anything else. ... show more

  • Best 12" sub I've ever owned.
Let me just start by saying that I've literally spent hours researching subs by reading all the reviews on amazon and going through countless forums. Seriously it took weeks to go through all the info. My price tag for a sub was $200 so I wanted the best in that category. All signs pointed to Sundowns SA-12. I bought a ported box that fell within the specs for this sub and have an amp that can provide 700 watts rms. In comparison to other single 12" set ups I've had, (which for the most part have been infinity kappa perfects and a kenwood) this SA-12 is like having two of those infinity's. For the people worried about SQ, even in a ported box it is extremely clean, extremely loud, and hits extremely low. My box is 2 cu ft before displacement and is tuned to 33hz. Which is very close to the recommended box specs for this sub. The sub is heavy, well constructed, and packed very nicely to protect it during shipping. If you're a person that is partial to a certain name brand, just do a google search for sundown SA-12 versus whatever name brand you want to compare it to and I promise someone has asked the same question and see for yourself. It's usually sundown all the way. I read about people with two of these in their trunk and I can't imagine how they keep their car from falling apart. I promise if you put this thing in the right ported box (do your homework) and have an amp that can produce an actual 600 or more rms you will see exactly what I'm saying. I just wish I could give this thing six stars. ... show more

Incredible. Before I give the details of the sound I will mention that I have my Big 3 and a HO alternator. Originally I had the SA 18 a couple years back. Due to personal reason I had to sell it. That was my first Sundown sub and it made me a fan for life. Unfortunately I downsized vehicles so I couldn't fit an 18 when I was back in the market for one. I decided to go with one 12 to save space. While the SA 12 is not as loud as the SA 18, it does sound more accurate and cleaner. This sub sounded great before my Big 3 and HO alternator, and sounds even better with them. I bought a prefabbed enclosure here from Amazon, (MSW Enclosures) @ 2.0 Cu. Ft. @ 32hz. I have an Infinity K.1000 powering it and this little monster hits amazing. The lows flex my car like no other. Though most people say this subwoofer is for SPL I would have to disagree. I'm a fan of most genres and it never disappoints on the performance. I've noticed a little more output since I've been playing it more, but I wouldn't be scared to push these hard right out of the box. Don't cheap out on your amp and box, and you'll be plenty satisfied. This is a great subwoofer and I can't wait to add a second one. ... show more

  • Ver impressed
I've only had this sub for a couple days and so far I'm impressed. I've been into car audio for awhile now, about 18 yrs. I've had fosgate, orion, polk, and even had two of the all mighty JL 12w6v2's with two slash 500/1 amps. With the combination of bang for the buck, small enclosure requirement, spl, and sq this sub beats them all. I needed something that could operate in a small sealed enclosure so i was nervous that I wouldn't get too much sound out of anything this inexpensive. This turns out to be louder than the 12w6 and just as clean sounding. If I had the space I would have done a slightly bigger box though. Its in a 1 cubic ft box before you take the speaker displacement into account. I do feel a drop off around 35 hz that may not be there if the box were bigger. But still sounds great anyway. I'm running it with an Alpine mrx-m110 pushing 1157 watts into two ohms with an audiocontrol lc2i loc, and the sub handles it without a problem. Hats off to sundown audio. ... show more

  • They'll take a beating and happily ask for another!
After getting back into car audio after a 25 year hiatus, I can say these are the best subs I've ever owned. I originally bought some 10" Infinity Kappa 1000Ws. They sounded great but the box was too small and I wanted to feel more bass. Wow! These Sundowns deliver all the feels! A bit overkill really. But I don't care. I love 'em! My wife says I'm going through a midlife crises. At 44 with a 2K watt sound system, she's probably right. But you know what? I'm older, wiser, and have a lot more money that I did at 19. Being able to read and understand the science behind the sound and box volume and port sizing makes this an all new experience. And, today's amps produce way more power per dollar than amps from the 90s. Anyway, the subs definitely pound hard. I don't know that they are the best for sound quality, but I'm learning that I like it loud and SQ is slightly less important. ... show more

  • Great bang for the buck
Great sub, only running about 450W to it right now and it hits very very hard, very clear. Looks well built, and it's HEAVY. Bass got louder/deeper after using for a few weeks. I see a lot of people running these at 1100W daily with no issues, they can take a beating. I've had kicker / alpine / few other brands and this Sundown hands down is the best in the price range. EDIT: Had to send my sub in for repair. Customer support from the seller WoofersInc and Sundown themselves was very fast, process was easy and support was very helpful. Cause of an unwound voice coil was most likely distortion. Please tune your amp/head unit properly! ... show more

  • Fantastic sub, needs more power!
1/22/17 update. Put the cx1200 amp in and wow what a difference. The extra power really let's this thing shine. Highly recommend getting a powerful amp to pair with this sub regardless of brand. So far it's awesome. I have it in a Belva prefab 1.8 cubic foot tuned to 36hz. I know, why put this in a prefab but I occasionally need my trunk so I have it setup to be easily removed. I'm currently using a kicker cx600 amp at 2 ohms (birth sheet says 676 watts) and tuned with my SMD DD1. It pushes nicely but it's just not enough for this sub. I'm in the process of getting a cx1200 (staying in the same line because my bass knob is permanently flushed into the console) and will update as the new amp gets in and the sub breaks in. I also have a 10" Rockford p3 in a custom sealed .6 box fiberglassed into the car (hooked up individually and separately to be played when the sa12 isn't there) and the sa12 sounds just as tight but hits a little lower. ... show more
