  • Terrible instructions, OK fit
Budget nonbrand roof rack 'get what you pay for' kind of thing but not a ton of things to complain about with the final result. The instructions give you more of a vague idea of how to install at best and downright damaging steps at worst. One of the opening steps is to directly break off a clip on the truck but that turns out to be totally not needed. Seems like the product itself was revised but the instructions never updated. The other main complaint was the torque specs provided are either a typo or totally converted wrong. Luckily both these steps seemed weird enough to me that I used better judgement during install but it could have very much gone wrong. Actual install took some bending and hammering to get things lined up but went on without excessive wailing and gnashing of teeth. Final fit looks fine and fits OK though getting the crossbars aligned takes a good solid whack. Loosening everything up and realigning might solve that but it also might just be that way. The design is built with some play to accommodate the whacking. Overall a fine rack. ... show more

  • Decent non-OEM rack
The body of this rack is a thick ABS plastic, and the metal threads where the rack mounts to the truck are inset in this plastic. The separate piece that is between the rack and your paint is a slightly bendable plastic, or a pretty hard rubber (not sure). This seems to sit flush pretty well with the rack on, but don't depend on just that to keep the water out. The instructions suggest adding some silicone to the threads on the threads that are on the roof. Do so, to prevent future headaches. You can remove the drip molding first to make sure the mounting threads line up before doing anything major, like breaking loose the puncture tape, etc. The piece on the back end that is supposed to be a gap filler of sorts (for the roof molding drip that you remove to put this rack on), does not reach all the way down, so it looks a bit awkward with a tiny gap uncovered. I have been unable to get one of the crossbars latched in correctly, so I haven't fully installed or hauled anything with it yet. There is a release lever on each end of the crossbars. It releases it from the rack so you can swing it over to attach securely to the other side. I'm not sure if it's out of alignment or what, but I can't get it to latch in to the other side. I will need to do more work with it to get it set in properly. The other crossbar latched without a problem and has almost no flex when tugged on. I have not had a chance to look at the OEM racks, but the instructions that came with this rack were printed with the words: contact your Toyota dealer for a copy of the document. I'm assuming the instructions were for the OEM Toyota ones and these are sort of a copycat for 1/2 the price. I did only receive one page of instructions, which was not appreciated. If you've ever had to contact a dealer for help with something that they cannot charge you for, you're in for a real treat. Fortunately, there are numerous youtube videos and forums who have this information available. Overall, not a bad product, but it does have some shortcomings that can be dealt with if you're handy or patient. I wasn't keen on spending $340 for the OEM racks, so I will get these figured out and mounted if possible, and return again for an update. ... show more

  • Very good
Went on very nicely. I did not realize that the bars folded up out of the way so you don’t have to listen to the wind blowing on them all time when you’re not using them. Very good product.

  • Decent rack at a good price.
Edit2: coming back yet again to restore the dropped star, due to the good customer service I received, and the good end result. To their credit, they reached out to offer replacement parts, which went on easily and fixed the issues I was having. Edit: coming back after some usage to drop a star and add some comments. The alignment of of the crossbars is really finicky, at least in my installation. I keep having trouble getting them back into their locked position. Tried forcing one and part of the plastic clip broke. Given that the "lock" is made of plastic in the first place, I'm somewhat leery of using these to secure anything of value. ------------------------------- I received and installed this on the same day, so I'm reviewing it right away while memory is still fresh. All in all, I got a much-needed rack at a good price for my 2019 SR5. Installation did not go perfectly, but in the end I was able to save money sourcing and installing it myself and feel pretty good about its utility and aesthetics (edit: not so much, see above). Some tips/info for others so they can make an informed decision: 1. Installation requires the breaking of the front set of the small plastic "front ditch clips" (left and right). I have hated my ditch moldings from the start (they have blown out and nearly off at inopportune moments and dirt/debris had been collecting under them), so good riddance. I never plan on going back to them but you should know going in that it is not possible to uninstall this rack and have a factory standard truck (without somehow replacing those clips). 2. By the same token, you must puncture and cut away some of the seal tape that covers the factory bolt holes you will be using to mount the rack. This is to be expected, and could be replaced and returned to new if you ever uninstall the rack and can find the same or similar seal tape. 3. I had read some reports online of even the OEM rack leaking so I went ahead and squeezed some silicone caulk into each of the holes as an additional safety measure. 4. The instructions are not perfect. For example, they tell you to install a total of 10 rubber washers with self adhesive "mastic" but the package only contained 6. They did include some other rubber washers (without adhesive) that you can use. I added some silicone to these as well for extra waterproofing. The instructions also don't refer at all to the metal washers included. I used them where they seemed most useful and didn't sweat that too much. Lastly, the instructions leave you with a cliff hanger after installing the righthand rack. Sure you can repeat your steps for the LH rack but I found it somewhat odd. There's also nothing about how the rack itself works, though it is fairly self explanatory. Just lift the latches, slide across, and click down. 5. The instructions say the RH side roof rack does not have the crossbar preinstalled but mine did. You will need to remove both of them for installation anyway. 6. The instructions call for a certain torque spec on the torx screws but they also include an Allen wrench to do this installation (which obviously doesn't result in a certain torque spec). I ended up using my drill with a torx bit and initially thought the importance of the spec was for strength, but it may be to avoid overtightening and stripping the bolt holes as well. In any case, I tightened to "tight enough" and called it good. 7. The front of the new ditch molding did not come all the way to meet the molding at the windshield. It was like a 1/4" short. Doesn't really both me, but might bother those who treat their Tacomas like show pieces. 8. The front two screws holes in the rack, which mount to the brackets, were misaligned on both sides for me. These holes are in the plastic outer cap and were easily widened enough to get the job done with a drill bit. In the instructions they suggest using an awl to align the holes but that wouldn't have worked in my situation. Your mileage may vary. 9. At the very end of the install I went to replace and screw in the crossbars and discovered that one wouldn't screw in. If this happens to you, it's probably because the square lock nut has fallen (or been pushed) out of its little slot. Replacing it unfortunately required removing and reinstalling that entire side, so double check these are in place before you tighten everything down. ... show more

  • Feels cheap, looks basic, and had cosmetic imperfections straight out of the box
The pictures of this roof rack look great, but I think I'll pass on it due to the cosmetic imperfections and cheap feel. I highly doubt this rack will hold as much weight as advertised due to the flimsy quality, so it's probably for those who will use it for light applications or aesthetics only. Overall it will fit the '23 Tacoma double cab, and it looks great, but I wouldn't trust it for overlanding. ... show more
