  • Buy it!
Another cliche ‘I don’t write reviews’ post here... but I am very impressed with all aspects of this subwoofer! Most everything is already covered in other reviews but I wanted to give some thanks to Rockville for this design! In another life I loved having worked on cars, having 2x12s in the trunk, nothing was left stock. I consider myself an audio and car enthusiast, but not a pro by any means. I like car modifications to fit as close to OEM as possible. I also like to have audio equipment sound true, flat / accurate with its reproduction. This enclosure is for specifically under-seat applications. You will not be happy with it in the trunk. - Build quality is top notch - solid metal enclosure will break your toe if you’re not careful. No rattles or cheap-feeling at all. All connections and adjustments are on one side, good idea. - Small size will fit *most* under-seat locations. Note: 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 drivers seat has a plastic tray that will hold it, but it is tight. Does not fit ‘on the floor’ under the seat due to a/c duct and gear motor. So the enclosure sticks forward just an inch from the front of the seat towards your legs, but does not interfere or touch. In the seats lowest position it will squish the enclosure, but send vibrations straight to your tushie for an amazing concert-like experience. -10ga Amp Kit was perfect. Quality cables and wires included. You will need a few extra zip ties of your own. I used the ‘soft auto on’ and hi-input connections so I only needed four wires: power, ground, left and right. -Subwoofer gain level remote knob is helpful to route to the dash so you don’t have to keep adjusting the gain on the subwoofer itself. -Power is more than adequate for under-seat locations. Note: Sub is far too quiet when located in the trunk, but it is not designed for that. I tried it in the trunk but needed to move it back to under the seat. -Sound quality is very impressive for a tiny 8” enclosure. You cannot even tell a sub is installed from outside the car (you won’t p*ss off your neighbors). On stock head unit (4x door speakers, 2x tweeters in the dash. Bass +3, mid +2, High +3) Subwoofer bass boost on zero, LPF at ~60hz, gain at 60% the lows are thick and rich, kick drums hit hard. Rock, metal, country - sounds great. Hip hop or techno is average, to above average, because of the ultra low kick and sub hits... there are just a few frequencies that are missing but that could be due to my car head unit eq. Overall, great product! With new JVC CS-J620 door speakers and this sub, my anemic stock car stereo has become fantastic! ... show more

  • Great little sub! Great little sub!
This little sub sounds absolutely fantastic for the size and low price. I couldn't be more pleased with it! I installed it in an '88 Toyota pickup Xtra Cab that had an existing low-end JVC head unit running four equally cheap speakers. The setup sounded as you'd expect... not great, even with the built-in13-band eq tweaked as good as I could get it. Bass response was lousy. One huge issue with the setup was a horrible ~150 Hz resonance in the cavities in the back of the cab where the rear 6.5" speakers were installed. I cut that frequency in the eq, which helped tremendously, but the problem remained. I thought about installing some baffles and acoustic mat in there, but figured I'd get the sub in first and see if I could fix it with proper crossover settings. One benefit of small subs is that they can reproduce higher frequencies than larger subs. So I was hopeful I could crank up the sub's LPF and let it handle that troublesome 150 Hz, and set the HPF on the rear speakers above it. I'd planned to install the sub under one of the seats, but protrusions in the floorboard on both sides prevented that. I ended up installing it on the floor behind the driver's seat, close to the back wall of the cab. Wiring was straightforward. I removed the seats to make things easier, and allow me to lift the carpet in order to run the cable for the remote to the center console. I ran the wiring and connected it to the sub outputs on the head unit. It powered right up with the head unit and started thumping with the music! After adjusting the crossovers and eq on the head unit, and tweaking the adjustments on the sub, the system sounded absolutely amazing. I ended up turning the LPF on the sub to its maximum setting, and set the HPF on the rear speakers equally high. The annoying resonance was completely eliminated! I tested the system with several different types of music, including hard rock with tight kick drums, and rap with super-low bass lines, and was just thrilled across the board with the performance of this little, unobtrusive sub. 10/10, would buy again! In fact, I'm about to take some measurements on my '86 Buick Grand National, and if it will fit under the seat, I'm gonna grab another one! ... show more

  • Performs pretty good for the price-2015 smart car fortwo Performs pretty good for the price-2015 smart car fortwo
I ordered the 8" ss8p with the wiring kit since it would come all at once. However I only received the speaker. A few days later, I got the wiring kit separate. Installed the speaker the day I got it after a quick run to get a wiring kit. Kinda sucked but nothing too crazy. Upon first inspection, the speaker felt robust in build quality and dense. Really felt like a quality product. I installed this onto my 2015 smart car fortwo with the base two speaker system. The two speakers had sounded horrible and broke so I put in some aftermarket pioneer 6.5" full range speakers and they sounded much more full and clear. However, the bass was lacking incredibly. In addition, the smart car has tons of engine bass and vibrations that any bass I could hear while stationary with the door speakers got drowned out with road noise and such. So I decided to get this small compact sub to slide behind the drivers seat. It fit perfectly. After installing and some tuning, this thing sounds amazing for the small size. Sure it won't blow you away of shake mirrors too much, but it is exponentially better than what door speakers and produce. I must say however, that it isn't all perfect. Some things I noticed was that the bass knob that comes with it is basically useless at high volume. And that brings me to my other point, this sub no longer increases in power after a certain volume. Assuming I've got the gain up high and the bass knob at like halfway, once I turn up my headunit over 22 volume, the door speakers begin to get louder than the bass. My door speakers begin to distort at around 26 volume so basically there's a sweet spot for this sub. Also, keep this thing well ventilated. I've got a small car with the engine right behind me and a relatively weak ac system. Pair that with 100 degree days and some music and this thing WILL get hot. I've got it behind my seat in an area where ventilation is pretty bad so I understand, but its gone into protection mode two or three times already. Though it's only done that when I've idled for like 20 mins listening to music. If this is under a seat beside an air vent you'll have no shutting-off issues like I did. I guess it's a pretty great package for like 110 dollars. If your car has no low end, this will most definitely be an improvement. Think of this as a slightly better premium factory bose system level of bass in a car. It's there for sure, but its not two 12". Perfect for me though. ... show more

  • Jeep TJ Owner - Pleasantly Surprised Thus Far!
I've only had the Rockville SS8P installed in my Jeep TJ for a few days, but I'm very pleased thus far! As most Jeep Wrangler owners know, cabin space is at a premium, so I wanted something that would add just a little bass and low end sound to my aftermarket system w/o compromising my limited storage space. I recently purchased a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X304 head unit (which I love) to power 2-Pioneer 6.5" speakers in the roll bar, and 2-Pioneer tweeters in the front dash area. As TJ owners also know, the stock stereo system configuration offers very little low end sound and the result is a very treble-heavy, "tinny" sound field regardless of the quality of the components installed. I originally purchased a Kenwood SW11 compact powered subwoofer that was DOA, so after returning that device (no knock on Kenwood -- just a random bad unit), I decided to give the Rockville SS8P a shot after reading many positive reviews. I'm pretty particular about the sound of my music, so I was a bit skeptical of how effective the SS8P would actually perform. However, after getting a little tuning advice from a friend who is sound system savvy, I installed the SS8P using the RCA cable option (which was very simple -- hardest part IMO was simply routing and hiding the cables). My order also included the Rockville RWK10 amp install kit (also impressive in its quality -- I highly recommend) which made the install process much easier. After tuning the gain w/ a 60Hz test signal, and setting up the signal crossovers in the head unit to direct sound signals appropriately, this little beast has exceeded my expectations thus far! If your space is limited and you are looking for something to "fill in" the lows and create a balanced sound field, the Rockville SS8P might be what you're searching for, especially if your musical tastes are in genres that are not overly "bass-heavy" (ie: rock, country, etc.). In addition, the sound quality is crisp and clear (thus far) with minimal distortion unless the unit is pushed to max volume and/or bass levels. As most reviewers have expressed, the Rockville SS8P is certainly not going to rattle the neighbor's windows, but it does produce a consistent "rumble" that I can feel in my driver seat despite the woofer being installed under the rear passenger bench seat. Even my 14-year-old daughter (who listens to a lot of rap & hip-hop) was impressed with what she 'felt' and heard while listening to her music in the passenger seat! The unit is housed in a sturdy aluminum enclosure (as a point of reference, the slightly more expensive Kenwood SW11 mentioned earlier was enclosed in plastic) and the overall build quality seems impressive. I'm hoping that's an indication of the unit's overall durability and reliability in the long term. As the old saying goes, "Time will tell," but in the interim, "So far, so good!" ... show more

  • Great addition to round out the low end!
This sub produces clean bass that pairs very nicely with my JBL components running off a high-powered Sony receiver. I put this in my 2007 Prius in 2018. My daughter now drives the car and the whole system is still running as strong as ever. I can't tell you how impressed I am with this sub with the sound quality and the life span of it. I am planning to use this (or the SS10P version) in the next car I am about to get. I am a little bit of an audio snob in general. I can get really picky over audio at times. I also used to have a decked-out car audio system with everything amp'd and the big sub in the trunk in my younger years, so I have some experience in this area as well. I have found I can't handle a lot of bass rattling my body anymore. It makes me sick. :/ I still want that low-end punch, but without too much shaking of the body. This little guy fits that bill on a smaller car like a Prius perfectly. It will rattle my rearview mirror but doesn't make me sick. I tested this against the older model Rockville RW10CA 10" under-seat sub wondering if I wanted more bass. The 10" option was too much bass for what I was looking for, but more importantly to me, it was too muddy sounding. It gave a lot more rumble but wasn't clean and tight. I wouldn't have minded the extra headroom on the days I wanted to push the bass a little more, but I stuck with the 8" because it just sounded cleaner (they didn't have a 10" version of this SS series then). I am very interested in the 10" version hoping it is just as clean with that headroom I sometimes want. Be warned, if you turn it up too loud it will distort. My daughter likes to turn on bass boost sometimes and I instantly know it is on when I get in. I turn it back off. It can rumble more, but it just sounds like a mess at that point (like any speaker that distorts). If you want some nice, clean low-end that will rumble the car decently without drowning out the highs, get this. If you want more chesty feeling bass, I think the 10" version will be more to your liking. It's double the RMS power as well. I just hope it's as clean! ... show more

  • Have realistic expections and tune it properly
The item has mixed reviews for different reasons, partly unrealistic expectations and second probably not tuning it correctly to existing stereo and speakers. First, I will say it fit my needs perfectly, I have a stock head unit and don't want to add an aftermarket head unit nor a large amp and subs. I think the main purpose of this under seat sub is exactly that it's meant for not taking up too much space. Because of that it will have limited capacity to push bass but it still does pretty good. It provides enough low end to give the car a fuller more complete sound and a small amount of kick. This wont give you hard hitting bass so don't expect that. I have another car that has a 10" under-seat sub and that one is even more impressive but I couldn't fit that under my seat in the CRV. What to do: Tune the sub a bit. Use the bass boost, but turn down the volum on the sub a tiny bit to prevent distortion. Find the correct setting for the Low Pass filter. If you turn it all the way to 150hz I think it sounds farty sort of like 6x9s in a bad box. I set mine at about 2 o clock, which would be just a little past 100hz, that is the sweet spot for me. If you have nice door speakers or components, then set this lower than 100hz, closer to 60 or 75. This part is key to get it to sound good with your existing speakers. Try this before you give up on it. ... show more

  • Wires too small, fire hazard.
Nice little all in one unit, however. Instructions call for 8awg wire, kit comes with 10awg wire, final hookup to amp is only 14awg. Returned, not burning down my truck.
