  • Broke after three uses
I bought this set as a gift. I had heard good things about the brand, and purchased the starter set. Unfortunately, after three uses, the parting tool broke off at the handle. There was no refund as they said if it breaks at the handle, that's because of "a catch" which isn't warrantied. I feel a good set, which I thought I had bought, should last longer than three uses. ... show more

  • Skew broke with the first use.
Let me start with that I am still very new to turning. I just recurved this set yesterday and have been having a great time with them. Huge difference between the standard cheap tools that came with my lathe. With that being said, I was practicing with the skew and It caught and snapped in half, as you can see from the picture. I realize that I am still learning but I didn’t think that one catch would make the tool break in half the way it did. Still think this is a great set, just a little disappointed is all. Update: I would like to add that Robert Sorby has reached out to me about my issue and has sent a replacement skew for free. Great customer service! ... show more

  • Pretty solid starter set.
Good overall. HSS is tricky to learn how to sharpen, but this is a good set for beginners and gets decent quality lathe tools for less that it would cost to buy them individually. Good for spindle turning more than bowl turning, which is usually where beginners start.

  • came in a nice box. Nothing wrong with them whatsoever
I read some other reviews that these are Grizzly chisels? Maybe I Read wrong but these are certainly Robert Sorby chisels made in Sheffield England. Top Top quality. You cannot go wrong with it. I believe it was shipped by Grizzly though... came in a nice box. Nothing wrong with them whatsoever. You can plan on sharpening these before use to whatever angle you desire - this is standard for all turning tools that are bought brand new. I also read someplace else someone complaining they weren't sharp. They aren't! But that is par for the industry. You have to sharpen them yourself. ... show more

  • the parting tool is made a little lite, it snapped right at the handle the first time I used it.
Seem like good tools except for the parting tool witch snapped right at the handle the first time I used it. The rest of the tools worked good once you sharpen them.

  • Unsure on Steel Quality (Broken Roughing Gouge)
I have used these tools for about a year now and while turning an oak spindle, my roughing gouge hit a knot in the wood and snapped. I understand this can happen but with a large piece of metal launching across the shop, I am now a bit wary to use the remaining tools. I did not have issues up to this point however and the tools seemed to hold a decent edge. I assume this was due to a steel defect and not using inferior metals. ... show more

  • Fine and Professional Tools
I have been turning for over 10 years and final purchased a Sorby set. They are without a doubt one of the finest turning tools available. Very sturdy and keeps a sharp edge longer than other tools.
