Description

The RIKON 70-800 4-Piece Woodturning System combines a 16" machined aluminum handle with three interchangeable steel shafts fitted with round, square and diamond tungsten-carbide insert cutters. The carbide cutters retain their cutting edges longer than typical carbon or high-speed steel tools and can be rotated to expose a fresh edge when one side becomes dull. The handle features an anti-vibration grip and forward collet-style chuck for changing shafts without separate tools. Each 8-3/8" steel shaft has a flat bottom and two side bevels for added stability against the tool rest. The complete system stores in a fitted presentation box and includes the cutter mounting hardware and T20 wrench.

I did my research, and watched many videos. Being a beginner turner I wanted a set of wood turning tools that would last my a life time. Plus I do not have a bench grinder, nor the room for one. So after reviewing many carbide tool sets I decided to go with the Rikon. Not just because I have a Rikon lathe, but because of the quick change feature. Sure I can buy individual carbide tools with handles on them, but that would be super pricey. The Rikon set is affordable, and very easy to use. I love these tools, and they work good. Change out between cutting bits is fastened easy. They have a nice weight to them, and you can add weight if you want to. Rikon has very nice support for this tool set. These are great tools. I especially like how easy it is to switch out from one cutter tip to another one. It literally takes seconds and it's hmmmm... enjoyable to do. That may sound a bit strange, but the machining is so nice and the fit so good that it just gives me a feeling of satisfaction to swap cutters out. It's like a well fitting drawer that just glides into place effortlessly and perfectly. Makes you want to open the drawer and shut it again- just because. These tools are a great addition to any wood turners collection of tools. I made four cherry table legs out of 4" stock and they (the tools) performed quite well. Great sturdy set for projects big and small. The Rikon cutters it comes with stay sharp longer but other brands fit as well. Long heavyweight handle that can be beefed up (see accessories for side mount handle, handle extension or a counterweight for heavy duty use). Quick change feature really is easy and allows me to use the tools without the handle for turning smaller projects like pens. The one aspect we didn’t like was that the shaft tips were too fat to allow us to approach our work from a sharp angle. This was easily remedied by honing down the tip. That is the only reason for the 4 star rating. Notice I said “we”. My husband owns a set and I have two! I use several of the specialty tips and don’t want to have to change them out so often. Wish we had before and after pics of the honing job for you. ... show more

This is the 2nd set of these Rikon tools I own. I bought some negative rake Carbide cutters and did not feel like changing cutters everytime I wanted to use them. The set went on sale so I bought another one. Nice set for the money. The round scraper works very well. The pointed parting tool is okay and the square end is horrible. The lack of quality machining on the tool end prevents the square scraper to remain square. The idea of the tool is to allow the user to turn a flat and square point. I always wanted carbide turning tools but didn't want to buy three. This kit uses one handle and that concerned me until I tried it. Very easy quick release. A fast partial turn and pull to remove and an easy push and turn to tighten. Super easy! Handle weight and grip is quality. tool shaft very sturdy.
