  • Pahoehoe is Hawaiian for smooth flowing lava
These replaced the white nylgut strings that came with the base uke I bought on Amazon that just looked weird and felt cheap. Good: Looks great. Feels a little more comfortable than the white ones. Sounds a bit warmer. Bad: Installation was tricky because the strings are slippery and quite a bit more stretchy than the ones they replaced. I had to wind them several times to bring them up to tune. I tune them up every time I play and they seem to have stretched a bit. Hopefully this becomes less of an issue once the strings are done stretching. Overall they feel great and I would buy again, but take some tweaking. ... show more

  • Sound Amazing
I love them. My Oscar Schmidt bass came with white Aquila strings. They sounded great. But they were very sticky and hard to get up and down the neck because of that. These Pahoehoe strings give a great upright type bass sound and are easy to slide around on. The reason for the 4 stars is simple. These strings are amazingly stretchy and are difficult to string properly. Thanks to youtube i found a good way to do it. Being a rubber bass string there not that stable and fall out of tune quickly. After a week of playing and re-tuning the strings are really settling in nicely. After playing on them for awhile i can see why so many U-Bass players recommend these. Id purchase these again. ... show more

  • Hard to install
These are the original strings that ship with the Kala U-basses, and have a great smooth feel. I rated these as a 4 because they are VERY hard to install. The are short and have to be stretched through the tuners at tension since they are all shorter that the 21" scale length when not stretched. In the case of the D and G, you have to stretch them with a lot of force using a pair of vice grips (advice I got online) to pull them through the tuners prior to actually turning the tuner. If you don't do this you end up with too many windings around the tuner. It took me about 2 hours to string my bass! ... show more

  • Kala U-Bass Strings and comments.
These are the original type strings from Kala. This type of string is a little tricky to install and tune. The strings have amazing tone and work very well, but it takes about 2 weeks for them to "settle down" and tune properly. When first installed, they will not stay in tune long and they are out of tune on the higher frets of the bass, but after a couple weeks, and continually tightening them (which stretches them), they work amazingly well. I'm very happy with them. I wish there was a quicker 'settle in' time, but once they reach that point, they stay in tune and intonation in good. ... show more

  • Had to modify Kala bass to use these strings
Installed these on a Kala bass. The strings were too bib to fit into the holes at the bridge so had to use a drill bit to open up the holes. Really like the bridge end of the strings, didn’t have to tie them in a knot. No matter what I tried the G-string kept slipping out of the tuning peg. I had to use a cable tie to make that string work.. Strings look and sound terrific ... show more

  • Strings do stretch
These are perfect for my ubass. I prefer these to the wrapped ones that came on my ubass model. They are a bit short when you start to install them but stretch so much that they wind up being too long. My suggestion is to install them (prestretch if necessary) then tune your instrument every day for a week or two then release them and cut them off a bit. You will need to retune every day for several weeks until stretching is complete. ... show more

  • Worked for Hadean, with effort
Bought these for our Hadean U-bass. These are thicker than the aquila strings that came with it, so they don't fit into the holes in the tuning pegs. You'll have to stretch the bujezus out of them, pull it through the slot and tuck the end under while you turn the pegs. Stretch them as far as you can because it'll still need lots of turns to get into tune! It's a wrestling match, but it does get the job done and you end up with much slicker, less sloppy, easier to play strings! Worth the effort! ... show more

  • Switching back to thunderguts.
These are supposed to be the best U-bass strings. I got these to replace thunderguts. The only good thing about them is that they are smooth. They are incredibly difficult to install. Others say they are too thick, too short; they only are when compared to settled strings. When they stretch out, they become thinner, and a lot longer. But you don't get enough excess string to work with, so initially they are very difficult to work with. New strings are just long enough to touch the tuning pegs (they have to be pulled to wrap around the tuners), and after they settle, there's up to 12 inches of excess after the string has been fully wrapped around the tuners. Sound is quite dull especially on two low strings. The lower strings are also a lot quieter and sustain is really bad compared to thunderguts. If you're not doing a lot of slides, these strings are pretty poor. I hate how tacky thunderguts feel, but now I realized how great they sound compared to these PU strings. Note: I only play acoustic. ... show more
