  • Finally: a G-string without the sour twang!
Like almost every guitarist in history, I have always had problems sour-sounding, overly twangy G strings. On my Strat especially, it just seemed impossible to get the open G - really any note on the third string - to sound as clean and pure as the others. Then one day I came across an old acoustic that did not have this problem; on close inspection I saw that it had a wound 3rd string, rather than the straight (unwound) G string that virtually every other light or medium string set on the market has. Some of the thicker "jazz" or acoustic string sets have a wound third string; Dean Markey makes a "Blue Steel" medium (.011-.052) set with a wound G. But as far as I know only D'Addario makes a "light" set (suitable for most electrics, especially if you like bending strings) with a wound G - the EXL 110W's. I have to say, after receiving the D'Addario EXL 110W's and restringing my Strat, within five minutes I went back on Amazon and ordered five more sets. The strings are lively and bright - but not too much so - and far more importantly, the wound 3rd string completely solved the sour/twangy G problem. It's got to be the thinnest wound string out there - .018 - but in spite of the winding I have little trouble with bends, even at the lower frets. I am going to put EXL 110W's on my Les Paul as well, I like them that much. For the picky, these strings are slightly more "talky" on the slides than the previous Fender bullets were - but not annoyingly so. Maybe over time, as a little oil builds up on them, they will quiet down a little. Some say that an .009 (ultralight) is a better gauge string for a Strat (Strats come from the factory with .009's), but the .010's seem just fine to me. The slightly heavier gauge did however put a little extra relief (concave bend) in the neck, but a quarter turn on the truss rod (clockwise, when looking over the headstock, using the allen wrench that comes with the guitar) fixed that and now the strings play just as low and fast as the .009's did. All in all, VERY happy to have finally solved the "sour G" problem! Love these strings! ... show more

  • I love these strings
Style: Regular Light, Wound 3rd, 10-46 Size: 1-Pack
I was an Ernie ball user for 40 years. Due to a customer service issue I switched brands. These are amazing strings at a great price. The would 3rd intonates perfectly with less slippage. The strings are well made and packaged well. My only complaint would be the inner packaging. I wish it opened easier. You should really cut the packaging. I have found that tearing it can actually bend the stings. ... show more

  • Intonation problems? Fixed pickups? Not sure which strings to get?
Style: Regular Light, Wound 3rd, 10-46 Size: 1-Pack
Get these. D'Addario strings have served me well throughout most of my time playing guitar, and even for a higher price I haven't found strings that actually sound significantly better. They last a while, sound great, have a great balance between flexibility and rigidity, and feel wonderful. For these specifically - I've been using strings with a wound 3rd since I learned more about my pickups and intonation on electric guitars. Basically, if your G string sounds out of place through an amplifier/while recording/etc and you cant figure out why, and you also don't have by-the-string adjustable pickups (note, most pickups can be adjusted, but some may be individually raised and lowered per string position, and will have a kind of screw head on the pole. Many wonderful and popular guitars do not have pickups like this) - get strings like this. This is a great brand and the price is great. These'll fix your problem :) ... show more

  • Good strings for vintage style strats
Style: Regular Light, Wound 3rd, 10-46 Size: 1-Pack
I purchased this set because the Pyramid hand wound specials in 11-50 (wound G) I was buying were really expensive and had to be purchased from a specialty retailer. I've always liked D'Addario strings in the past - good price point, decent longevity, and less harsh on the frets than comparably priced sets of strings from Ernie Ball. They're also one of the few companies to offer a wound G string, which can really make or break a strat stye guitar with staggered pickup poles. Like the Pyramids, this set is round wound, which means that there's a little more play in the strings than you might find on a hex wound set - I find rounds to be less rigid when bending, but others might describe the sensation differently. If you're looking to try something new, it's a good set to experiment with. Personally though, I'm going to stick with the Pyramids from now on. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about the tonal complexity and the sensation of playing on the Pyramids that make them more pleasant. That being said, they're like $15 a pack, so maybe you get what you pay for? ... show more

  • CURED MY STRATITS!!!!!! Practically crying over here.
Style: Regular Light, Wound 3rd, 10-46 Size: 1-Pack
This is my wife's account, but either way, here's the review: I have been struggling with the dreaded 'Stratitis'- which is a double or multi-note dissonance on certain strings. For me it was below the 12th fret on the G string. AND IT DROVE ME CRAZY. I've tried coated strings, super-light strings, vintage (not hot) pickups to try to eliminate strong magent pull etc (I know- its jargon, but trust me, I've tried every remedy short of chainsawing my guitar into firewood). Then I read an article that mentioned that old strats had wound G strings. So I ponied up my 4 bucks and change for some of these babies. I just swapped out the G, since I wasn't sure it was going to work. HOLY HELL!!! My guitar is cured!!!!! It feels a little weird to bend on that string (it sort of squirts around a little) but I'm sure I'll master it. Gone gone gone are the ugly, dissonant tones that have plagued me through the years. Now I can play sweetly sustained notes, without having to always use vibrato- I can just let the note sing out. Awesome product- I can't speak on the notion of whether these will break or antyhing like that- I've have them for about an hour. But I found my cure so I'm happy. If you have this maddening issue, try the strings. It may be the thing you need. ... show more
