A great tool to have.
Great thermal camera. No need for batteries or a separate device. Simply plug into your phone it's always ready to go. Posted some photos of my laptop and ac vents in the car. You can really see where the heat is. Software is easy to use also and you can take photos and save them to your phone.

Easy to use. Handy features. Smooth footage.
Really impressed with how clear the thermal image is! Works well on walls, windows, vents, appliances, electronics, or pipes, everything. The image stays smooth and responsive as you move the camera around, minimal lag. Instantly locks onto the highest and lowest temps too. Also pretty ez to use, just plug in and prompts you to download the linked app. Attaching a pic of my cat in a very dark closet. ... show more

Thermal camera works great and good features but lacks a good user manual
This review is for the RISION Magic Thermal Camera, 320x240 QuadIR, Hot/Cold Spot Track, Live Temp for USB-C iOS, Android & Win with -4°F~1112°F, ±3.6℉ Accuracy, 25Hz Thermal Imaging Camera for HVAC/Electrical Inspection. The package arrived with the following items: • RISION Magic Thermal Camera • Portable Carry Case • USB-C to USB-C charging cable • USB-A to USB-C adapter • RISION Quick User Guide From the start, I have to say that to view the full RISION User Manual, you must click on a link. The included Quick User Guide only provides a link to the RISION website, so I actually ended up downloading the manual from the link in the product advertisement. Once you download it, do not expect a detailed guide on how to use the camera or a full specification sheet. All you get is a list of buttons and what they do. Therefore, most of the information and specifications in this review come from the ad or what I observed directly in the RISION App. Because of the lack of a detailed manual, I had to discover the following features on my own: • You can generate a report, but to view it, you must first take a few photos, select them, and then generate the report to share or create a PDF file. However, this is followed by a prompt to log in or create an account. I tried retrieving the report, but it could not be accessed without logging in. • To use this USB-C camera on an Apple device, you will need an iPhone 15 or later. The RISION thermal camera creates a higher-resolution image of 320×240 QuadIR from a native thermal image sensor of 160×120 pixels. It has a 25Hz frame refresh rate, which gives a flicker-free view on your phone's screen. The infrared camera measures a temperature range from -4°F to 1112°F (-20°C to 600°C). The most impressive claim is its thermal sensitivity of <40mK. With that milliKelvin rating, the image sensor can detect tiny thermal variations, which is perfect if you are looking for overheating components on an electronic printed circuit board (PCB). The advertisement mentions that the RISION View app requires NO REGISTRATION. Well, that is debatable since I could not generate a report without first creating an account. If I am wrong about this, a better, more detailed user manual might have guided me in the right direction. The RISION App has a lot more features than this review can cover. Here are a few examples of what I discovered while experimenting with it: • You can easily change the temperature readings from Celsius to Fahrenheit. • In addition to the fixed 12 color and black-and-white palettes, there is a 13th customizable palette. • When you hit the shutter button in the upper right corner of the app and it finishes its calibration, a plus icon appears to the left of it. This allows you to manually merge the thermal sensor view with your phone's standard camera lens. Overall, despite the learning curve, the image quality on this RISION thermal camera is outstanding. Using the various functions and settings in the app, I was able to enhance the screen view and take snapshots. The photos are stored directly in your phone's gallery folder, so there is no need to search through hidden folders. Another impressive thing about this thermal camera is that it did not show any signs of overheating like another USB-C camera I own. In fact, it only felt slightly warmer than the ambient room temperature. If you are already familiar with other smartphone thermal cameras and can get past the initial learning curve, you will not be disappointed with this unit. Because of lack of user manual guidance I have to subtract a star from this review ... show more

Useful
I’m really impressed with this thermal camera. The 320×240 resolution gives you clear images, and it makes it easy to see temperature differences and find hot or cold spots. I also like the QuadIR technology, hot/cold spot tracking, and live temperature display, which make inspections and troubleshooting much easier. Overall, it’s a really handy and versatile tool to have around! ... show more

Impressive Specs on Paper, but Too Unreliable for Inspection Work
I had high expectations for this thermal camera because the advertised resolution, temperature range, and 25Hz imaging sounded very useful for checking HVAC equipment and electrical components. Unfortunately, my experience with it has been frustrating. My biggest issue is consistency. The temperature readings seemed to move around more than I expected, even when I was pointing the camera at the same area. Hot and cold spot tracking was also not as dependable as I needed it to be, which makes it difficult to trust when trying to locate a specific problem. The USB-C connection was another annoyance. There were times when I had to disconnect and reconnect the camera before it was recognized properly. For a tool that’s supposed to be convenient and portable, I expected a much smoother plug-and-use experience. The thermal image itself can certainly show obvious temperature differences, but for detailed inspection work I need something I can trust without constantly questioning the reading or connection. It’s possible I received a faulty unit, especially considering the specifications this model claims, but the one I received simply wasn’t reliable enough for the HVAC and electrical troubleshooting I intended to use it for. ... show more

This thermal camera is both useful and fun!
I wasn't too sure what to expect when I ordered this but I am very happy with this thermal camera! There's really not much in the box. Just a quick start sheet, the case, the camera and a USB extension cable to use with your phone or camera. Using the camera is pretty simple. Scan the code, download and install the app, plug the camera into a USB port either directly or using the cable. The app starts up automatically when the camera is connected. You can adjust settings such as Celsius versus Fahrenheit and other things. The camera itself seems to be pretty accurate! I've tested it using an infrared thermometer that I have calibrated and this camera is within 3° F on all the measurements taken within about 10 feet. As the distance increases, the variance gets bigger because the temperatures drop a little. Image quality is definitely sufficient for taking thermal readings. I have only tested it on an Android phone and compatibility was not a problem at all. The case itself is pretty nice because it has a hard shell with a soft outer material, foam insert for the camera that holds it snugly and a mesh pocket for the extension cable. Everything that comes with this kid seems to be well made and durable. Now on to the fun stuff. While I am not a professional, I am in the HVAC industry. This will definitely come in handy for finding hot and cold spots in the home and taking both event and pipe temperature measurements. One of the pictures I've included shows the ceiling joists through the sheetrock because they extend up past the insulation and get warmer than the sheetrock can, which then transmits that heat into that section of the sheetrock. Keep in mind, it's not x-ray vision, just reading surface temperatures. The screenshot also gives you an idea of the simple software interface RISION uses. On the right side there's a bar showing the scope of temperatures from low to high. A red dot on the image shows the high temperature location and reading, a blue dot shows the low and the crosshairs give you a third data point. Saving the images as simple as touching the capture button on the bottom. Due to the variance, this is probably not a good way to tell if someone has a fever based on their skin temperatures but it is still fun. For anything else you want to do around the house, it's close enough to give you a good idea of what's going on because it is very good at detecting a difference in temperatures within the same image. Sweeping it around rooms also reveals pretty much every piece of electronics that is drawing current, whether you know it or not. ... show more
