I love this set-up, It is very durable and well made! I'm on my second season with it now and it is my go to rod when I fly out of town and need to pack light, It even fits easily in my carry-on. Not much room for extra tackle, but I usually buy that locally at my destination after I find out what's working best. The only problem I've had is being able to find replacement tips from the manufacturer. I closed my ultr-light tip in the awning on my RV and it snapped off, haven't been able to find a replacement yet. Total bummer, because this was my favorite for most of the fishing I do. Otherwise a great value, I have a rod for almost every situation in a compact design with flawless function. Will add another star of I can figure out how to order a replacement tip, if I hadn't been careless I'm sure this combo would be a family heirloom someday. Update: I was able to find replacement tips on the Rigged & Ready web site. I was still under warranty, but discovered it was actually cheaper and faster to just buy a couple of extra tips (mailed from their US location) than it was to pay the processing and shipping fees for the "free" tips (shipped from their UK home location)! ... show more

I had fished for years with a vintage 4-piece fiberglass rod with a sliding reel mount so that it could be used for both fly-fishing and spin fishing. Really, it functioned as a slow fly rod that could be used in a pinch with a spinning rod. Recently, when we were headed for a week in the Boundary Waters, I wanted to get a second packable rod for my kids to use. I ordered the X5 with the reels because I liked the idea of the integrated reel protection. I have really enjoyed this rod! I have been super impressed with the design and performance of the rod. As a spinning rod, it casts better than my regular mid-weight rod. When I put on the lighter-duty fly tip and a 6-weight line, at first I didn't think it was going to be workable--the rod is shorter than I am used to in a 6-weight and the action is very fast. Once I got used to it, though, I really liked it. It can really launch a big streamer. The shorter length makes it feasible for tiny streams, though the heavier action means that delicate presentation and precise location are hard. One thing worth mentioning is that the packed size of the rig is even smaller than I pictured. It fits easily in a day pack, let alone a backpacking pack. I'm looking forward to taking it all over. (NB Mine shipped with a minor defect in the rod case--a sewing glitch in one of the reel pockets. Andy provided stellar support and authentic enthusiasm for the product and its use.) ... show more

it fits perfectly in a travel backpack for taking on a plane or wherever which is awesome. the case is sturdy and well put together and the packaging is great. my only complaint is that the different tips that come with it some are way too close in sensitivity it would've been better for saltwater fishing if there was some longer sturdier options. I'm sure they are great for freshwater excursions though but no so great for saltwater pier fishing ... show more

Great shipping/product (R&R- x series) Compact and looks very durable like the smuggler 7 I had previously purchased and just ordered a second smuggler 6 as replacement for this. Unfortunately returning due to the length between spin reel in “closest” position to the first “nice tournament” guide that is closest to the reel. Paired with my surf reel a Diawa bg 5000 spooled with 10lb and 20lb braid, the braid “slaps” this section between and negatively effects casting ability of this very nice rod. Didn’t even try further away switched position, where the fly reel would go, thus making this “slapping” problem worse. Would function really well as a travel fly rod. Don’t fly fish when I travel. ... show more

I travel from Boston to Seattle regularly for work. As an avid angler, it is outright shameful to find yourself in one of the most pristine fishing locations 4-6 times a year without a rod. The problem, of course, has always been traveling with all that extra equipment. If this were a vacation I'd have no trouble traveling with the extra baggage, but when you're traveling for work, on an expense account, it turns out fishing equipment doesn't qualify as "necessary equipment" (side note, we should be advocating for fishing at every major accounting school so we can eventually correct this horrific notion). After reading about the backstory of the X5's creator, and his similar frustration trying to find a "travel" rod that could actually meet Carry-On size restriction, I decided I would give it a try myself. And boy did this not disappoint! The rod not only fit into my carry-on but left plenty of room for reels, tackle, flies, etc. More importantly, the rod performs wonderfully. I've used it for both spinning and fly fishing and as you might expect, having a pretty strong backbone, it's sweet spot is spinning. That said, it made an excellent fly rod as well. Paired with a 6wt, I was able to effortlessly lay dry flies with on a stream as well as haul streamers with ease. My only issue was the lack of documentation. A one-sheeter describing each tip and how/when to use them would have been really helpful. I was able to find everything online but I shouldn't have had to search for it. ... show more

I needed a travel rod to bring on vacation. This seemed pretty awesome and looking at the rigged n ready products I ended up going with this one, which I regret. It tries to be useable for so many contrasting things that it can’t be good at any. fot spinning goes, it’s incredibly floppy and just feels like a 20$ Walmart rod. For baitcasting, it’s handle is just completely awful and feels so unnatural. The rod seems durable and “well made”, but from a feel perspective it feels like a floppy noodle you would expect from a crappy Walmart rod. The handle is an utter joke from its attempt to be available for 3 different reels. Honestly it’s a cool concept and some of the other products look like they don’t have some of these issues but this one right here simply tries to be useable in so many different catagories that it’s nothing more than useable. UPDATE: I went with the smuggler rod and it’s much better. Handle is much better and has more guides. I feel like the non-fly fishing capability makes it way more practical thus not sacrificing any cast/spinning ability. ... show more

    • Incredible rod for travel
I purchased this rod to bring with me on vacation, and it proved to be the right decision. The rod performed beautifully and was used almost every day for a month straight. Quite a few fish were successfully landed as well, and the rod casted 1 1/2 oz setups with no issue. One thing I did notice was that after continuously casting, I would have to tighten the blank a bit. This is understandable though as I was mainly fishing whipping style with heavier setups. Another thing to note, the case that the rod comes in is very well made as well! As I fastened the case to the outside of my backpack, it unfortunately took a bit of a beating on some of the hikes to the water. Both the case and the rod have remained undamaged though, which is quite impressive. ... show more

Was really excited to receive this in the mail as I was getting really into fishing this season. But upon opening the package, I was immediately disappointed. Amidst all the branding of being "designed in the Lake District", the rod is very much a Made in China product. It would not have been a disappointment if they had not made such a big deal on their marketing about being a UK product. Then comes the mess of parts. There are no instructions included. To find any form of instructions on which blank connects to another to form a rod combo, you have to go online to squint at an image to figure that out. NOTE: There are far fewer practical rod combinations than the advertised 25 combos (what good is a 3' H rod?) Further confusing is that there are no clear instructions on the power and lure limits of each "rod". Both of which would be quite important information to know as casting weights exceeding what the rod is meant for, risks breaking the rod. On to the specific package that I received, there were a few defects in the product. 1. The butt end extension would not fit into the butt, the only piece that is meant for it to fit on. The internal fit is completely different diameter than the butt end. 2. At least 2 guides came chipped and / or bent. Putting the pieces together was far more cumbersome than practical. The most "usable" 9' combo actually weighs significantly heavier than even the Ugly Stick Elite 9', and that is a beater rod. Really want to like the concept of a one-rod to do it all but this rebranded AliExpress package is going back. ... show more
