My water heater started providing less hot water. i ordered and installed this thermostat . ( about 2 months ago) no change in hot water produced. decided to live with less hot water for awhile , and deal with problem later. got a chance to do more trouble shooting today. replaced the new thermostat t i bought with an old thermostat from a different water heater we replaced 1 month ago. worked, so my original diagnosis wa correct, i just didnt realize the part i bought from amazon was defective. too late to get refund . but at least i didnt have to replace entire water heater. ... show more

Received a ‘Preferred’ brand thermostat, not Rheem as the description would have you think. Looked very similar so went ahead and fitted it to avoid hassle of returning it and finding another. Seemed ok for a few weeks then failed to turn off and water reached about 150 degrees - scalding hot - regardless of where the temp is set. Would be much safer if they could fail open, not closed. Wish I’d have returned it and found a brand I’d heard of. ... show more

Identical to original equipment (of course). Probably a good idea to replace lower thermostat at the same time. My upper was fried, but I'm not certain the upper was the cause. The insulation on the wire that led to the lower was melted back 4".

This is the upper thermostat. Be sure to take a pic of your wiring BEFORE you disconnect your old one. This has more wires, and you must be sure that you get them right. Works like a dream. Very easy to install... Great price too.
