  • Really great product!!!
Pattern Name: Heater
Ok so this needs a review. I live in Ohio where it gets cold. I have had this for while now and it has worked flawlessly. It runs one shower with zero problems. I do not see it running two at the same time in the winter, but very possible in the summer and warmer weather. Before I bought this I called the warranty department to just test how they would respond. They were great to me. Then I told them what I was doing and the lady said “I don’t blame you” and wasn’t upset with me. We run our water at 135 degrees Fahrenheit. The install was super easy, and it looks very good. It never has a smell when it’s working, and we never any issues with it. We also have a 27kw and it works flawlessly also. This is only because my house is split plumbing. Love the product and highly recommend it. ... show more

  • 4 years and still going strong
Pattern Name: Heater
This water heater is awesome nearly 4 years and going strong. When we bought our fixer upper, this was put in to replace an 80 Gallon traditional HW heater. I wanted the efficiency of not storing water. There are 3 adults in the house, so typical water usage. I ran the 4 sets of high voltage wires to the circuit panel with required 4 double throw 240v circuits, to power it so you have to have a fair amount of room in your service panel to make this work. I love the way it is easy to adjust HW down to 80 degrees. We have a hose hook up for convenience right at the unit in the garage. This makes it easy to do water changes on my fish tank as well are on a well with great water and I don’t have to treat it. Also nice to have warm water for washing cars and we never run out of hot water. Would definitely recommend a buy. ... show more

  • Make sure to register it within 30 days
Pattern Name: Heater
I bought the unit in May 2023 for an addition I was planning to build onto my house. I didn't open the box or read the manual to learn that there is no warranty unless you register the product within 30 days of purchase until it was too late. As soon as the unit was powered up it had problems with the motherboard. It would not turn on when the water started flowing. I had two master electricians and a master plumber troubleshoot the unit before calling customer service. Both electricians told me the power was good. They could get the unit to turn on by applying pressure to certain places on the control board or wires but it would become unresponsive after. Eventually it quit turning on completely. I reported the problem to customer service and they sent a replacement motherboard free of charge even though I had not registered the warranty. With the new motherboard installed the unit works but will only power on 2 of the 4 heating elements. If the water flow exceeds 1.3gpm the unit returns an error code E5, which usually means the water flow is too high for the unit, but the unit should operate with as much as 6gpm at my incoming water temp of 67°F. I contacted customer support again and they cannot help me. They suggested purchasing a new flow sensor, which doesn't make sense because it is displaying the correct flow amount on the unit; the unit just thinks that 1.4+gpm is too much and will not kick on the other heating elements. All heating elements, thermistors, and the fuse have been checked by a master electrician according to the company's troubleshooting guide. They will not replace the unit because I didn't register the warranty in time. So the unit powers one shower but no more, and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix it. Lesson learned. Make sure to register any appliance purchase within 30 days and be prepared for the spam emails to surge a bit after they sell your information to data farms. ... show more

  • Limited lifetime warranty, great customer service.
Pattern Name: Heater
This thing is super high quality! I was expecting a cross between an anvil and a hot water heater for the price. I was impressed the second I took it out of the box. I installed mine myself. I had some plumbing refits since I was going from a tank to tankless. The wiring was pretty strait forward, but these things do pull a ton of amps. I installed mine and all the lights in the house flickered as the heater cores cycled. I had more than enough service to the house. There is a ton of stuff on the web about tankless waterheater doing this, not just EcoSmart. Somewhere outside my house in the power lines there is a loose neutral wire connector. You can forget getting the power company to chase the line and fix it. So now I am freaking out. I have plumbed and wired for this and now I am going to have to send it back and change everything for a tanked heater.....or so I thought. I called EcoSmart and talked to Juan. I explained to him what was happening. He knew what it was doing and he explained to me that they can help. All I had to do was open the control box and move a jumper that slowed down the cycle. I took me longer to open the box than it did to fix it. Now hot water all the time. I have turned on 5 sinks and 2 showers (with the outside temp of 34) just to see what the max I could use at one time. I could not tell a temperature difference with all in use. Last, these things have a limited lifetime warranty. I would recommend any EcoSmart product because of the customer service, the quality, ease of installation, and the lifetime warranty. ... show more

  • Don't expect it to function like a traditional tank.
Pattern Name: Heater
After extensive research we chose this unit and the largest they offer because of our house hold size and usage. So far so good it has been running three years strong now and we still love it. We have a family of 5 and and I don't have much in the way of complaints. It still has its limitations... You can't run the dishwasher, the shower, the sink, etc all at once much like a traditional tank. However, once the teenager is done with his 6 hour shower am not waiting to a traditional tank to fill and heat back up. My tub is about a bagillion gallons and it stays hot the whole time while filling. After 3 years it seems the savings is negligible on the electric cost but the over all benefit of never ending hot water is worth it. We did the install ourselves but truly.. not for the faint of heart. My husband and I have loads of experience in stuff like this. The 36KW requires 4- 40amp breakers. That's 4 breakers with double switches so you need to make sure that you have at least 8 open slots in your breaker box otherwise you'll have to upgrade. Also, keep in mind you need to upgrade all your faucets to Low Flow if you haven't already. Make sure you hook the cold in and hot out up correctly, it's labeled on the bottom of the box. Check, then check again and a third time otherwise you wont get any hot water if it's backwards. (Might have done this and took a little troubleshooting to figure out what was wrong. Thought it was the unit at first) When the unit cuts on it's silent. I totally expected something... I don't know what but, I was surprised it was silent. Also, it makes the lights flicker ever so slightly. Rightly so too, it is sucking a ton of power when it's on. Note that I have 200 amp service and it only makes my NON LED lights flicker. We only have a few regular bulbs left, we've just been replacing them as they burn out. I read other reviews that showed that you need to set it higher then a normal tank. It's true.I like my showers at about 110 degrees (which is way hotter then most people) and I had to crank the unit all the way to the max 140 degrees to get about 112 at the furthest shower. My old tank was set at like 135. But, keep in mind we also have copper pipe and the shower is about 50-60 feet away from the unit so we loose a good bit from the unit to the tap. I expect once we upgrade the pipes and insulate it'll help.- turns out it's true. The PVC pipes loose less heat. Our sinks that are still hooked to copper take longer to heat. Overall after you work out the kinks to get it functioning the way you like it, it is AMAZING to have hot water after my teenage son showers. He is in there forever and he would always run the old tank dry which meant the rest of us had to wait. Seriously, with 5 of us all fighting for evening showers/baths and a million loads of laundry and dishes and everything else you really can't go wrong with endless hot water. No more waiting for the old tank to heat up! ... show more

  • !!! Best thing we did!!! !!! Best thing we did!!!
Pattern Name: Heater
Let's see 3 months trying to decide what I wanted, the coast of the upgrade with the new wirse and breakers was really the only thing holding me back but then I kept reading, studying, and reviewing. Finally I was like there is more good than bad reviews if I'm gonna replace it might as well be updated rather than outdated.5 days in and the whole family loves it.i got the EcoSmart 36 because I have a big family but I only have 200 amp service to my house so we only run 3 breakers so its basically making it a eco27 running only 3 elements instead of 4. We had a 125 amp sub panel added just for the tankless unit. The man ran 2-2-2-4 wire and 100 amp breaker for sub panel and 8/2 55ft to tankless. Also customer service was more than great and helpful they also told me how to move the jumper from 36kw to 27kw because I'm using it as a eco27 and also helps on flickering dimmable LED lights and that is the only reason I leave a 4 Star because they absolutely deserve everyone of them great tankless water heater great customer service and lifetime limited warranty If license tek hooks it up. We are happy and would most definitely recommend this unit and company. We have 2200sf home 2 bathrooms and jacuzzi room with his and her shower set temp 115 inlet temp 68 everything works fine. Most of the time 2 showers kitchen sink and washer running no problems but out of all the space and 460lb out my house. I'll be bk in 6 months to update review. ... show more

  • 4 years later - Caveats and ongoing maintenance 4 years later - Caveats and ongoing maintenance
Pattern Name: Heater
I installed this water heater in 2018. I had to change the entire electrical service (outside panel) on my 1956 house to accommodate the new load. I now have a 200 amp service. And yes, all the lights in the house flicker when someone is in the shower even with the upgraded service. I suppose I’ve grown accused to the flickering. In a weird way it serves as a monitoring device to know wether your kids are in the shower like they’re supposed to be (I’ve got 4 teenagers). It heats the water well, endless supply - no complaints there. However, the heating elements will come apart over time with use (constant heating and cooling of the metal). In a traditional water heater it’s more of a constant “on”. So with this tankless unit the outside copper breaks down and comes apart exposing all the internal bits - which is the heating wire all wrapped in a porcelain type material. This material breaks away in little chunks and floats to each and every faucet in your house and begins to clog each aerator screen. This builds up to where you lose water pressure which is annoying but it gets to the point where the flow is so restricted that your hot water (via flow valve) won’t turn on. And thus your hot water heater becomes its own worst enemy. You then go through your entire house and take every single faucet and shower head apart to clean out all the debris that looks like little rocks. Before you discover this you will spend many nights of poor water pressure and cold showers scratching your head and wondering about all of it. You will think your pipes are coming apart (but all the galvanized has been replaced with PEX), you will think the city supply is contaminated, you will think the main line into your house needs to be replaced, your will install a whole-house water filter. And none of it will help. Eventually you’ll cut the (newly installed) power to the heater and take the heating elements out to find they are so corroded and broken that you can hardly wrangle them out of the heater at all. After the shock and disbelief wear off, you’ll flush out the heater, order new elements and replace them, and clean all the debris out of your faucets again. And voila, nice hot water again. This is your new semi-annual to annual routine for the convenience of endless hot water. For real, I’m ordering my 4th heating element and I’ve had the water heater for 4 years now. (It’s mostly the 1st element that breaks down because they are activated sequentially based on how much hot water is needed. The 1st element comes on each and every time so it breaks down much faster) This whole experience was cut-and-paste for a friend that installed the same water heater. He called me for help after he couldn’t figure it out. He literally had a contractor in his front yard giving him a bid to tear out and replace his main water line when I got there. I broke it all down for him… cut to the end… he replaced the water heater with a traditional one because he had tenants and needed an immediate fix. But hey… endless hot water. Or something. ... show more

  • Great! Great!
Pattern Name: Heater
I’ve been considering the EcoSmart tankless water heater for a few years now, then my water heater randomly crapped out on me this fall and I figured I’d go for it! I was hesitant because I’d asked my plumber about electric tankless water heaters (I don’t have gas in my house & everything is electric) and he said that they were “useless” and that “they would only get the water to 80 degrees in the winter”?! I thought this was odd since I’ve seen 5 star reviews on these heaters from places like Montana and North Dakota, & I’m in Atlanta where it doesn’t any where near that cold here! Anyway, I had this overnight shipped for an extra $10 with my prime account, & had an excellent contractor install it for me (who could do both the electrical & plumbing work). I think he charged me $900, but the wiring was something like $250+ at home deport. Anyway, the price came out about the same (if not less) than what the plumber had quoted me for a regular tank water heater. Plus I’ve already noticed a reduction in my electrical bill! And the water get HOT! Like way hotter than my old heater! Only thing I’d say as a warning is that you will want to make sure that you have enough breakers available in your box, because the other reviews weren’t joking when they said it takes 4 double breakers (basically 8 single breaker spots)! The contractor didn’t believe me were I said 8 total but that’s really what it takes! ... show more
